Ben raced out of school. Christmas holidays! When he got home, he went to check on his pony, Scout. He slipped him a candy, and Scout nuzzled(用口鼻轻擦)his shoulder. Ben started toward the house and found his older brother Jack starting the snowmobile(雪地机动车)to deliver gas to Uncle Mike. Ben jumped on the back and joined him.
They set off slowly. The snow was fresh and deep on the remote mountain path. When they arrived, Jack went over with the gas can. Ben looked up the mountain and saw something moving. He got binoculars(望远镜)and saw two animals. Could it be a horse Jack climbed back on the snowmobile and asked Ben to leave. When Ben told Jack he saw horses up in the snowy trees, Jack didn't believe it. Ben looked back up the mountain, but he couldn't see anything.
At dinner Ben told his father he saw two horses up on the mountain today. “If they are horses, they must be trapped by all this snow,” said his dad. “If they're trapped, we have to do something,” said Ben, his voice rising.
His dad looked at Jack. “Well, in the morning go and take a look. Take the gun and some hay(干草) . If they look as if they can survive, give them the hay. If not…” Jack looked serious, and slowly nodded. Ben knew what the gun was for, and his chest went cold.
In the morning, they set off in the cold snow. When they got to the place where Ben had seen the horses, they stopped and looked up using binoculars. No horses. They waited for a few minutes.
“I see them. They're horses. Let’s take the snowmobile up there.” Ben suddenly exclaimed. They drove the snowmobile in the deep snow and finally reached the place. “Oh no!” said Ben. “They're starving!” One of the horses had lost a lot of hair, and their tails were almost gone. Their eyes were lifeless and tired.
Paragraph 1: Jack walked around the horses.
Paragraph 2: The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help.
参考范文:
Jack walked around the horses. “Well,” said Jack, sighing, picking up the gun. “I guess I better use this.” “No! We should at least try!” pleaded Ben, stroking the horses gently. Jack walked around the horses again. He patted one of them on the neck. It made a sad, small groaning sound. “Maybe you’re right.” He sure didn’t want to have to shoot these horses. Ben quickly got the hay and spread it around in piles. The horses ate hungrily. With one more pat to each horse, Jack and Ben climbed on the snowmobile and drove back down the mountain as quickly as they could to report their news. Back at home the family had a hurried meeting. After discussing all kinds of possible ways to put the horses out of their misery, they finally decided to shovel a tunnel.
The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help. They even put notices up in the streets. Then they took the snowmobile back up the mountain with more hay and water and some warm blankets. The horses seemed happy to see them. Ben and Jack started shoveling with their fingers frozen and noses numb. Fortunately, soon a group of snowmobilers arrived. For the next week, people came and shoveled every day, and a deep, narrow trench very slowly worked its way down the mountain. Jack and Ben went every day to feed and water and talk to the horses. When the big day came, Ben and Jack managed to lead the horses down the long, narrow tunnel. Everyone was celebrating and hugging each other. Ben grinned from ear to ear and gave the horses a big hug.
下水作文:
Jack walked around the horses. Looking at the thin hair that covered the horses' bodies and the lifeless and tired eyes, Jack knew that their survival chances were small and took the gun out. However, Ben stopped him saying that though they were just like tiny broken boats at the mercy of the rough storm, he still felt their desire to survive. They offered the hay and the water to the two hungry horses, who quickly consumed all and seemed a little back on their feet. But almost simultaneously, a new problem came up: how to take them down to the village in such a dire situation when the mountain path was covered with deep snow And the only way out was to help them down the path. At the point, Ben suddenly had an idea.
The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help. They explained the struggling situation facing the two horses. Inspired by the two boys' kindness and courage, the whole village joined in the rescue, some taking supplies of hay and water, some coming with blankets to keep the horses warm and the others equipped with snow-clearing tools. Once at the place, they sprang into action. With the joint efforts of the villagers, the horses were well fed and the path was cleared. With the guidance of Scout and the company of the warmhearted souls, the trapped horses were finally down, safe and sound. The two boys' heroic deeds got widely recognized and everyone they knew gave them thumb-ups. But for Joe, it was his lovely pony that made the rescue successful. Patting Scout and stroking his hair gently, he knew it would be an unforgettable Christmas!

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel/ skw r l/.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait — and looking all round our house for signs of a nest or a mother — we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order.
More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean(断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter(吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
P1. One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.
P2. One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard.
参考答案
One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels. They found a hollow in an old tree where their nest was snug with moss and tree leaves. Startled by the unexpected stranger, the gray squirrel, crouching on the tree, chattered fierecely and trembled his furry tail. After spotting this, Squirt abandoned the stick in his mouth and ran back to Kaytlin for shelter. “He seemingly couldn’t survive on his own temporarily.” My daughter turned to us and stroked him affectionately. The following days witnessed his active round-trip, who was busy in carrying sticks and patching up the nest but came down to house for food.
One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard. We immediately headed for the nest, only to find it was destroyed by the heavy rain. It deepened my daughters’ concern after searching everywhere around our house. Kaytlin was anxious that the tiny squirrel was threatened by some other nocturnal creatures. We had no alternative, distressed the whole night. But to our relief, when the sun rose, the Squirt appeared and was waiting for his feeds, accompanied by the family of gray squirrels. It seemed that they have formed an intimate acquaintance and he can be reintroduced to the wild. The warm experience taught my children to appreciate life with respect and live in harmony with nature.

As I was driving to the airport last week the odometer(里程表) on my truck rotated to 100,000 kilometers. This led me to pause and think about selling the truck and buying a new one, but it also made me think about all the life I’d lived in this truck, and how my bulldog had accompanied me in it, leaving me hesitating about selling it.
When I returned to Canada after nine years overseas, what better way could I fit in with and immerse in rural culture than by buying a pickup
The day I rolled out of the dealer(经销商) and hit the first gravel road(碎石马路) in my Toyota Tacoma was exciting, until I got very nervous as rocks hit my new purchase. But all that quickly evaporated when I received my first call through the truck’s Bluetooth phone. It was the doctor, to say that my Dad was hospitalized in a remote location. I immediately followed the truck’s GPS and got there quickly and safely. I was with Dad for his last two days. And so the first memories of my truck are images carved in my heart.
As the kilometers of my life rolled on, Lyon, my bulldog who came back to Canada with me from France, claimed the back seat as an area belonging only to her. It didn’t matter how short or long the trip was, she stared at me in the review mirror all the timie. Most often, I would arrive at our destination and Lyon would stay in the back seat, bathed in the sun with the door open, knowing I would return. There was an overwhelming sense of comfort between us in that truck.
In the early days of truck ownership, I panicked at how dirty it became and any dent(凹痕) it put on. I soon realized, though, that it was part of the truck’s character. Now I look at every dent and recall the story or adventure that put them there. I began to see it as character-building, much like wrinkles appearing on my face. The truck was simply aging gracefully and began, like humans, to display its experience and wisdom.
P1. I don’t think a vehicle is just for travelling from place to place.
P2. But as I approached the car dealer, I stopped.

参考答案
P1.
I don’t think a vehicle is just for travelling from place to place. My truck was also a witness to my previous experiences full of sorrow and joy. Each time we met and parted, it meant completing a smooth travelling. As a young man, I was passionate about self-driving tour then. And the energetic truck bumped over the road and bounced up and down while lively Lyon stuck her head out of the window with her tail wagging excitedly. As I stepped on the accelerator, the whole valley echoed with the roar of engine, mixed with my laughter and her determined bark. There were many beautiful moments worth recalling. But I knew people couldn’t live with past. So I drove the truck to the dealer.
P2.
But as I approached the car dealer, I stopped. The stories and memories during the several decades flooded into my mind altogether. Lyon was still staring at me in the rear mirrow, but collapsing onto the back seat. With the wrinkles on my face growing, only the numerous circles of tyres could genuinely recorded the real track and prove the shifting seasons. After spotting the dent and rust, a ripple of depression ran through me and tears began to flow. I couldn’t say farewell to the truck, acting as an impressive reminder of so many memories. Therefore, I turned the truck around, bound for the further adventures. The odometer kept rotating, like the story of my life — moving ahead.

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird(蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs(蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird didn’t fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but didn’t immediately fly away.
Hovering(悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say good-bye.”
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared.

参考答案
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. Due to my great yearning to meet the hummingbird again, I accelerated my step and sprinted to the milking house. However, there was nowhere to spot the tiny creature. A ripple of disappointment ran through me and what I just pray was that she would be safe and not stuck in other traps. After a while, I had no alternative but to inquire others, but in vain. Every time I wandered in the farm alone, the memories of that lively hummingbird came flooding. During the following days, I had no interest in enjoying the warm sun and the laughers of my friends. The departure of my bird made me heartbreaking.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. She landed on a branch and gripped it with her talons. Then she hesitated for a second before lifting her wings and hovering around me. After spotting her arrival, I reached out my hand and approached her closer. To my astonishment, she perched on my hand and looked straight into my eyes. My friends exclaimed,” How inconceivable! She seemingly celebrated your reunion.” At that moment, the lively farm full of fragrant scents and thriving flowers completely matched the beauty of the singing of the little hummingbird. It became real for me to imagine a nature where generations of the flocks of birds rest in the farm and people will live harmony with different species with respect.
