When you are choosing a college, a lot of factors will probably play into your decision: the school’s reputation, the classes offered and the professor in your major, to name a few. However, given the ever-increasing competitiveness of universities to attract more and more applicants, many schools now offer extra benefits to be enjoyed by all their students. Here are some of the fun “extras” offered by the school.
Michigan Technological University
Taking advantage of the cold winter weather, Michigan Technological University sets itself apart with its on-campus ski resort, Mont Ripley, which is accessible and free for all students. Instead of hitting the campus gym, you'll be able to get your exercise outside on the slopes. When the pressure of school become too much, just head out for a day of free skiing and you'll be left feeling fully refreshed.
University of Missouri
At the University of Missouri, you can enjoy one of the best campus recreational centers in the country. It features an “indoor beach" complete with a waterfall and a lazy river, as well as an inexpensive full-service spa. Even if you don't enjoy working out, Missouri's recreational center will give you a reason to go to the gym.
New York University
If you're a fan of museum, NYU is the perfect university for you. Not only will you be located in the heart of a city featuring some of the best museums in the world, but the university will provide you with access to many of them. You can take advantage of visiting museums anytime you want — which means you'll never be bored on the weekends.High Point University
If you see yourself quickly tired of dining-hall food — something that happens to almost all of us — High Point University has a great option: a private steakhouse for students. Increased use of the Internet and mobile phones are undermining pupils’ capacity for independent study and promoting poor grammar, it was claimed.
Cranfield School of Management found almost six in 10 schoolchildren were copying information directly from websites for homework tasks without properly reading it.
More than a quarter thought it was an acceptable practice, even though they know it was considered plagiarism (剽窃). The study, based on a sample of around 260 pupils aged from 11 to 18 at a secondary school in the Midlands, raised fresh concerns that modern technology was having a destructive effect on young people. Andrew Kakabadse, professor of International Management Development at Cranfield, said, “Our research shows that technology obsession prevents spelling skills, encourages plagiarism, and disturbs classroom learning.
“Despite school policies restricting mobile phone usage, students use the phone frequently, with the majority making calls from the toilets. The mobile phone continues to be a main channel of social communication during the school day.”
The report revealed that so-called “text-speak’’ was increasingly finding it was into pupils’ school work. Three in 10 students admit to using text message shortcuts, such as “ruok” in essays and classroom tasks.
It followed a study earlier this year that found almost half of teachers failed to understand some pupils’ writing because it was so full of confusing language. Phrases such as “innit” and “Gr8” were regularly found in school work, it was claimed. The Cranfield study found that mobile use was so common that many pupils chose to ignore school rules on phones.
More than a third said they would use their mobile in class, while nearly three quarters said they would not even make an excuse to leave class to answer a phone call.

Sometimes your expectations don’t survive. But you have to make it through.
After a lengthy visa application procedure, I left my father with our dog, jumped on a flight, and there I was in London. Since Europe is an aspiration in my country, I had imagined it as a place where things always worked perfectly. I was alone in dealing with all kinds of problems as they arose, that was alright and this is how I became my own “special person” during my Erasmus exchange.
The accommodation I could afford was far from the city. To make things worse, I was new to many things, and definitely an outsider. But it wasn’t an exception to carelessness, I found out. My dorm was in a silent neighborhood. Little did I know that those calm streets would he visited by loud fire trucks...And because of me!
That morning, I closed the kitchen door after placing some bread in the toaster. I was still half asleep and looking for what to wear. For some reason, the automatic mechanism of the toaster to push the slices up didn’t work. When I went back to the kitchen. It was full of thick white smoke. Coughing hard, I opened the windows, stepped outside the door for a breath, and then went in again to reach for the fire extinguisher(灭火器). It was the first time I used one, and had to get out of the kitchen to be able to see how to unlock it. It was only then the fire alarm went off! I went in again and made sure I put off the fire.
Nothing was like how I planned. A few times I hung out in the school cafeteria, but couldn’t make friends. I went to discover the city, alone. Independence wasn’t something to be ashamed of after all. I wish I had made friends with people, but it turned out that I had to learn I wasn’t in need of others’ company to enjoy life. I tried to make the best of my time, thinking that being alone is a blessing too, just like being with friends is. My international experiences that followed definitely made me more social, but now I know that being alone is not a weakness, but a part of life embrace. Just like our mistakes, carelessness or bad luck, I can say it was during my time in London that I learnt I was, despite everything, a strong and special person who can cope with (处理) anything that comes her way.

This month, more than 4 million students across the Unites States will begin with their tenth grade, which is the make or break year for many 15-and 16-year-olds. They are likely to study in completely new schools, and have much more schoolwork and less free time. Even for those students who have done well in the ninth grade, going to high school can be a big challenge (挑战).
A study of Philadelphia high schools found that 57% (more than half!) of the students will experience the so-called "Tenth-grade shock" which means that many students will find big difficulties in their study. Some students deal with this shock by avoiding challenges. For example, some may drop difficult school work. Others may experience a hopelessness that results in failing their major classes, such as English, science and math.
This should matter a great deal for the teachers because students' smooth transition(过 渡)to tenth grade can have long-term consequences (后果) not only for the students themselves and their families but also for the society at large.
In the new economy, students who fail to finish high school with passing grades might have difficulty to get jobs. One study has found that the lifetime benefit to the local economy for one additional student who completes high school is half a million dollars or more. This is based on higher earnings and lower costs in health care, crime and other things.
We make these observations (观察) as researchers who have studied how schools and families can help young people to be successful. And we would like to make some suggestions on how to help our teenagers go through the "Tenth-grade shock”.
12.What is the so-called “Tenth-grade shock”
A.The free time the tenth graders will enjoy.
B.The new teachers the tenth graders will meet.
C.The challenges the tenth graders will face.
D.The difficulties the tenth graders have gone through.
13.Who does the underlined word “we” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Researchers. B.Parents. C.Teachers. D.Reporters.
14.Where is this text most likely taken from
A.An open letter. B.A research paper. C.A survey. D.A guidebook.
15.What is the best title for the text
A.The Best Advice for the Tenth Graders

C.The New and Hard Life for the Tenth Graders
D.The Possible Tenth-grade Shock and Its Consequences

Going back to school after a long break can be exciting for many. But for some, it isn’t easy, especially when there is something bothering them from deep inside—emotional baggage. One teacher in Oklahoma wanted to address that and that’s what she just did last week when her 7th and 8th graders showed up to school.
Karen Wunderlich Loewe has become popular after she posted about her school activity, which encouraged her young pupils to let it all out, whatever emotional baggage they have. This activity has moved the whole class to tears.
The students were told to write on the paper anonymously (不具名地) so they can have the courage to share their emotional baggage with the class. The students would then crumple (弄皱)their paper and put it and throw it across the room.
Each student would then pick up any piece of paper and read it to the class. Everyone learned what others’ problems were. There were things like losing pets, being left by their parents, disease, death…and on and on.
Once someone finished reading a piece of paper, the English teacher would then ask the class who owned that note. Students had a choice of admitting it or not. Many of them did and ended up sharing their stories with the entire class.

47.One possible version:
Everyone was moved to tears. It was an emotionally draining activity but Karen believes that her activity will inspire the kids to “judge a little less, love a little more, and forgive a little faster.” After the activity, Karen told her students to put the paper inside a bag hanging by the door. This should remind the young minds that everyone is struggling with something. While everyone is going through hard times differently, they should leave their problems out the door and enjoy learning.
Karen’s post on social media was shared over 370K times and received heartwarming comments. “This bag hangs by my door to help the kids remember that we all have baggage,” Karen said. “But they are not alone, they are loved, and we have each other’s back. “While many see this as an act of good faith and a feel-good story, some think this will just open up wounds of pain. One, in particular, is a teacher, said that research suggests asking student to share with everyone and relive painful situations is actually counterproductive.
