With the return of tourists, some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations are flat-out, telling tourists to stay away in 2023.
Lanzarote, Spain
Lanzarote has long been a top getaway choice for the British making up around half of the island’s overseas visitors. However, the days of budget drinking until dawn is over, as the Spanish President wants to attract “higher quality” visitors to spend more and drink less. The island declared itself a tourist-packed area early in 2023.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona has it all: modem art, a massive beach, all-night parties, and the food, culture and sunshine you want from a European city break. It’s also full of tourists. In 2022, the city took steps to limit the size of tour groups and introduce noise restrictions. The city will further limit numbers to ensure better life quality for locals.
Santorini, Greece
The Greek island attracts two million visitors annually, a significant number considering the island’s year-round population of around 10,000. While tourism is a large part of the economy, the island started restrictions in 2019, when passengers were limited to 8,000 per day and tourists weighing over 100kg were banned from riding donkeys.
Amalfi Coast Italy
In 2022, Amalfi Coast took number plate system for visitors. Cars with odd (奇数的) number plates were allowed access to the coast on one day, while cars ending in an even number were permitted to enter on the next. Local residents and public transport were exception. The coast also featured on Fodor’s list of places to avoid visiting in 2023 for its over-tourism.
21. Which destination do British people like to go most
A. Lanzarote in Spain. B. Barcelona in Spain.
C. Santorini in Greece. D. Amalfi Coast in Italy.
22. Who will be banned from riding donkeys in Santorini
A. Local residents. B. Overweighted visitors.
C. Noisy and heavy drinkers. D. Visitors from tour groups.
23. How does Amalfi Coast control its number of visitors
A. By banning low-quality visitors. B. By limiting the size of tour groups.
C. By keeping its visitors to 8,000 a day. D. By using car number plate system.

I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010. We were in the economic crisis. She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t stop me. I searched the measurements of a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, and then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
One evening, when I was about 13, my mom said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was in shock.
My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. But I had to pass a difficult test. Some of the questions involved an evaluation of the composer or when some piece was written. I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.
At the Purcell School. I spent two years working as hard as I could, performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano.
When I left the Purcell School, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School in London. I feel proud—it’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I’m at one of the world’s leading music schools.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano--what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped arouse my curiosity about how music works and the building blocks that form the pieces.
24. Why did the author’s mom buy him lessons at last
A. She was shocked by his first performance.
B. She had no doubt about his talent for piano.

A. The author felt surprised. B. The author felt proud.
C. The author felt satisfied D. The author felt disappointed.
27. What’s the author’s main purpose of writing this article
A. To introduce the method of mental practice.
B. To share how he convinced his mom to buy a piano.
C. To describe how costly it is to learn an instrument.
D. To encourage people to stick to their dreams.

If you had boarded a passenger plane in 1950, you would have seen five people in the cockpit (驾驶舱): two pilots, a radio operator, a navigator and a flight engineer. Over the years, technical advances have gradually removed the need for the last three, leaving just two pilots. That has been the norm (标准) in commercial aviation for decades.
However, things could be simplified further — one of the two remaining pilots could soon go. Many military aircraft are already manned by a single pilot, and for commercial aviation this would mean stepping into a brave new world.
But how will airlines make this brave innovation come true One way is to greatly increase automation in the cockpit, devoting more tasks to computers. Another is to shift the same tasks from the cockpit to the ground. “The latter approach seems to be more workable, at least in the short term, because much of what is required already exists,” says Patrick Smith, an airline pilot flying Boeing 767 aircraft. “A trained ground operator could observe a number of flights at once and even fully control the plane remotely if needed.”
It’s true that single-pilot operations could help airlines save money, but there is another reason which makes them quicken their pace for this crucial breakthrough. Boeing predicts a need for 600,000 new pilots in the next two decades, but by some estimates, there will be a deficit (赤字) of at least 34,000 pilots globally by 2025. Reducing the number of pilots on some crews or aircraft could lessen the impact of this.
Perhaps the biggest barrier to a single pilot will be selling the idea to passengers. In 2019, Don Hairis, a professor at Coventry University, conducted a survey on the prospect of flying on an airliner with just one pilot. Just a minority of participants said they’d be willing to take that flight, and the general idea was that removing a pilot increased the possibility of accidents. In the study, Harris concluded that the single-crew airliner would be still probably 20 years away.
28. What is the potential trend in commercial aviation according to the text
A. It will make air travel eco-friendly.
B. It will switch to single-pilot operations.
C. It will tighten its flight control for safety concerns.
D. It will bring in many military aircraft to the industry.
29. What does Patrick Smith think is a quick way to realize airlines’ brave innovation
A. Raising the standards in admitting new pilots. B. Making pilots adaptable to different situations.
C. Using computers to automate the flight process. D. Gaining piloting support from ground operators.
30. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The shortage of pilots. B. The need for new airlines.
C. The airlines’ brave innovation. D. The financial problem airlines face.
31. What can be inferred from Don Harris’ study
A. The prospect of single-crew airliners is bright.
B. It's urgent that airlines reduce airplane accidents.
C. Passengers are willing to try new types of airplanes.
D. Airlines have a long way to go before the innovation occurs.
D
When you’re going through a period of anxiety or depression it can be difficult to make decisions, whether those are significant life changes or everyday choices. Those with generalized anxiety disorder or mood disorders often report feeling uncomfortable with or being troubled by feelings of uncertainty — which doesn’t help when you need to make a decision, big or small.
Now in a new study, researchers find that people with higher levels of anxiety and depression are less able to adapt to fast-changing situations. But with the right intervention (干预) there may be ways to help those with anxiety or depression make better decisions in the moment.
Participants were aged between 18 and 55: some had symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder while others had no history of mental illness at all.
In the study, after filling in measures related to anxiety, depression, and worry, participants took pant in a video game. In each round, they were asked to choose between two shapes: picking one shape resulted in a reward, while the other delivered an electric shock.
The task took place in two blocks (小组) — one stable, in which one shape was associated with a reward 75% of the time and the other 25% of the time, and the other unstable, in which the shape with a higher probability (概率) of resulting in reward switched every twenty trials. In the unstable block, therefore, the participants had to keep adjusting their responses as the probabilities change.
Those participants with symptoms of anxiety or depression were slower to adjust their responses to the changes in probabilities. This suggests that mood disorders are associated with difficulty making decisions in changing circumstances.
Senior author Sonia Bishop argues that those participants who adapted quickly did so because of their emotional resilience (适应力) “Emotionally resilient people tend to focus on what gave them a good outcome. and in many real-world situations that might be key to learning to make good decisions,” she says.
Sonia Bishop suggests that encouraging people to focus on past successes rather than failures could be a useful behavioral intervention, making those difficult decisions a bit less tricky.
32. According to the text, which of the following affects decision-making
A. Feeling uncomfortable with the surroundings.
B. Feeling unsatisfactory with what will happen
C Feeling unsure of what is going to happen.
D. Feeling unsuitable for themselves to make a decision.
33. What is the purpose of the unstable block
A. To help those with anxiety make right decisions.
B. To train participants to respond to changes.
C. To make the video game more challenging.
D. To create a fast-changing situation.
34. Why does Sonia Bishop suggest focusing on past successes
A. To recall the past achievements. B. To improve decision-making ability.
C. To adapt quickly to a new situation. D. To avoid making tricky decisions.
35. What advice can be given according to the study
A. Try to think quickly when making decisions.
B. Don’t forget the past failures when making decisions.
C. Don’t focus on one single thing when making decisions.
D. Try to reduce your anxiety or depression when making decisions.

There I was stuck AGAIN. This was the same feeling that overwhelms me every year. But this year it was different, because if I failed this exam I would not graduate. I sat there, panic stricken, unable to move. Pressure crushed in on me. What if I could not go to high school Would Dad and Mum kick me out of their house
I took two deep breaths and looked up. I could see the teacher pacing up and down. The classroom was dead silent except for the clock. Tick Tock. Tick Tock. I checked the clock for the third time. Ten minutes left! I clenched (握紧) and unclenched my fist in an attempt to calm myself. Think! I told myself. I knew I could do this. My hand couldn’t help trembling. Then I scribbled (胡乱写下) the first few words that hit me.
“It isn’t my fault...”
I stared blankly at those words. At the comer of my eye, I could see my teacher walking towards me. She was checking on our progress! Dread built up within me. Then, I glanced at the four words again. Without any warning, my hand moved to write.
Hair on my arms stood as the teacher leaned in and started to read my work. I peered over to see my teacher’s expression, praying that my work had not brought in disappointment. To my astonishment, she displayed a clear satisfaction! That was good, wasn’t it I hurriedly looked down at my essay.
I skimmed it through. I felt proud. Now, there’s something I was still worried about. I checked the clock. Two minutes left! I was still writing!
I bit my lip, took a deep breath, and concentrated on writing. I heard the teacher leave.
“There’s one minute left. Please check your work.” the teacher reminded us.

M: They both play an important role in whatever task you do. But personally, I think hard work is more important than talent.
W: Why do you say so
M: Well, I knew nothing about music in the past. But with the help of my father, I learned to play the violin three years ago. I have been practicing four times a week. And last month I even went on stage and won second place. I am proud of myself.
W: Wow, what an amazing example! But the success of so many people around me proves that talent is more important. Susan, one of my aunts, is a quick learner. I remember once she told me that she had done nothing to prepare for a meeting, but she pulled it off, because she collected all the key information she needed in a short time.
M: Well, maybe. But for most ordinary people, all they can do is to spend more time and energy on what they are trying to accomplish.

A. To follow the cultural tradition.
B. To decrease the obstacles of old habits.
C. To increase the chances of achieving their goals.
A 18. B 19. A 20. C
W: Are New Year’s resolutions powerful or pointless Almost every year of my life, I’ve started the New Year with a set of resolutions that I’ve been determined to keep. The results, predictably, have been variable. Last year, I mostly kept to my fitness goal of doing 20-minute sports each day, but I failed miserably at my aim of quitting social media. According to my weekly screen-time reports, I still spend between two and three hours each day on my phone. I am far from alone in my determination to start each new year with a plan for self-improvement. At least a quarter of people typically make New Year’s resolutions, and a large portion of those good wishes end in disappointment. Rationally speaking, January 1st should be no better than any other day to make a life change. So why put the needless pressure on ourselves to “upgrade” our lives at the opening of a new calendar Recent psychological research, however, suggests that there are many good reasons to begin a new habit on the first day of a new year. That’s because we can all increase our chances of sticking to our new goals for the new year.

With the return of tourists, some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations are flat-out, telling tourists to stay away in 2023.
Lanzarote, Spain
Lanzarote has long been a top getaway choice for the British, making up around half of the island’s overseas visitors.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
In 2022, Amalfi Coast took number plate system for visitors. Cars with odd (奇数的) number plates were allowed access to the coast on one day, while cars ending in an even number were permitted to enter on the next. Local residents and public transport were exception. The coast also featured on Fodor’s list of places to avoid visiting in 2023 for its over-tourism.

B 29. D 30. A 31. D

划线词句前文“ Boeing predicts a need for 600,000 new pilots in the next two decades, but by some estimates, there will be a deficit(赤字)of at least 34,000 pilots globally by 2025. (波音公司预计,未来20年将需要60万名新飞行员,但据估计,到2025年,全球至少将出现3.4万名飞行员的缺口。)”说明飞行员短缺,从而推知划线词句“Reducing the number of pilots on some crews or aircraft could lessen the impact of this.(减少一些机组或飞机上的飞行员数量可以减轻这种影响。)” 故选A项。

C. Feeling unsure of what is going to happen.
C 33. D 34. B 35. D

根据文章第一段“Those with generalized anxiety disorder or mood disorders often report feeling uncomfortable with or being troubled by feelings of uncertainty-which doesn’t help when you need to make a decision, big or small.
文章第五段讲到“The task took place in two blocks (小组) — one stable, in which one shape was associated with a reward 75% of the time and the other 25% of the time, and the other unstable, in which the shape with a higher probability (概率) of resulting in reward switched every twenty trials. In the unstable block, therefore, the participants had to keep adjusting their responses as the probabilities change. (这项任务分两组进行——一组是稳定的,其中一种形状与奖励的关联概率为75%,另一种形状与奖励的关联概率为25%;另一组是不稳定的,其中形状与奖励的关联概率较高(每20次试验更换一次)。因此,在不稳定的小组中,参与者必须随着概率的变化不断调整他们的反应)”。由此可知,设置不稳定小组的目的是创造快速变化的局面,比较两种不同类型的参与者的适应环境的能力。故选D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Sonia Bishop suggests that encouraging people to focus on past successes rather than failures could be a useful behavioral intervention, making those difficult decisions a bit less tricky. (Sonia Bishop建议,鼓励人们专注于过去的成功而不是失败,这可能是一种有用的行为干预,让那些艰难的决定变得不那么棘手)”可知,Sonia Bishop建议关注过去的成功的原因是为了改善决策。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Now in a new study, researchers find that people with higher levels of anxiety and depression are less able to adapt to fast-changing situations. But with the right intervention (干预) there may be ways to help those with anxiety or depression make better decisions in the moment. (现在,在一项新的研究中,研究人员发现,焦虑和抑郁程度较高的人更难适应快速变化的环境。但只要有正确的干预也许有办法帮助那些焦虑或抑郁的人在当下做出更好的决定)”可推知,这项研究可以给出的建议是在做决定时减少焦虑或抑郁。故选D。

67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

One more word, I said to myself, come on. Just like this, I forced myself to concentrate and willed my hand to scribble whatever that popped up on my mind. “Time’s up! Put your pens down. Please hand in your test paper to me in the front.” the teacher announced. I finished! I put down my pen, breathing a sigh of relief, and then I stood up and limped towards the teacher to hand it in-my legs felt like noodles, thanks to the extreme tension.
A week later, the teacher handed the papers back to us. It was the time for truth! I folded my paper and held it tightly in my hands, shilly-shallying about whether to check the result in front of my classmates. Finally I decided I should face my fate bravely and unfolded it. It was an “A”! I could not believe my eyes. How could it be It was the first time in my life that I had got an “A”. I turned to look at my teacher. Our eyes met. She nodded and gave me a big smile! At that point, I made a firm resolution: I’d be more hard-working and more confident, so that I wouldn’t be stuck and panic like this again in high school.
