Rugiatu Favour Kanu, a 28-year-old Agriculture graduate from Njala University, wants to leave
the future of farming in good hands. That’s why she started her business, Slay Farms, in Sierra Leone.
On her 10 acres of land, Rugiatu works with other women farmers while teaching them everything
she knows about sustainable agriculture. This effort has earned her the nickname, “The Slay Farmer”.
Slay Farms is more than just a company; it’s also a community. By building a network of farmers
who share their skills, Rugiatu has created a space where women with shared goals can help each
other. The farm hosts a variety of learning events to spread information about the latest sustainable
agricultural technology. It also connects farmers with a wider market for their goods.
“In a country where agriculture is a key sector and the majority of the population is engaged in
farming, building relationships with other farmers can also help young agribusiness entrepreneurs (企
业家) understand the local context, including the challenges and opportunities that exist,” she wrote
in a post on the Slay Farms Facebook page.
She continued, “I encourage young farmers to adopt new, improved methods of farming, and I
believe by supporting each other, they can create a more sustainable agricultural sector in Sierra
Leone, contributing to the country’s economic growth and development.”
According to SwitSalone, Ruciatu also works for the Sierra Leone Produce Monitoring Board.
As a Quality Control Officer, she helps to make sure that local farms are putting out the best possible
produce for domestic and global distribution.
Ragiatu’s contributions to promoting agricultural innovation and giving other women farmers a
leg up in the industry recently earned her the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African
Leaders. This program has taken her to Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta Georgia for academic and
{#{QQABKQSAgggIQBIAAAgCUQFCCgGQkACAAIoOwAAIoAAAgANABCA=}#}
leadership courses that she’ll be able to apply to her work back home. Plus, it will afford her numerous
networking opportunities to continue growing her agricultural community!
24. Why did Rugiatu establish Slay Farms
A. To do research on sustainable agriculture. B. To improve local farmer’s farming ability.
C. To earn the support of the local community. D. To ensure the food safety in Sierra Leone.

French company Airseas, has promised to help cargo (货物) ships reduce their fuel consumption,
and cut their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an average of 20%. And they’re doing this with the
Seawing—a 1,000 square meter kite that will fly 300 meters (984 feet) above the water’s surface. So
the global shipping industry is apparently rediscovering the joy and efficiency of sails.
The large, ship-sized kite is currently being developed, and the company plans to open a factory
to produce the Seawing in 2026. Once manufactured, Airseas has promised that launching and
operating a Seawing on a cargo vessel will be automated, making it easy to use for crews. The kite
and the equipment that launches it are mounted on a boat’s deck, and the crew can simply press some
buttons and a large kite will rise into the sky. That’s not to say that the cargo ships won’t use their
engines at all, but the kite will take some pressure off of those engines and will reduce the need for
fuel. The wind will move the ship, just like it did for hundreds of years in the old days before
industrialization.
Lowering emissions by 20% may not seem like a big deal, but moving vast amounts of goods
back and forth on the high seas creates 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s more than
the airline industry, which produced about 2% of the world’s emissions in 2021, according to the
International Energy Agency. Shipping is also a massive industry, and one worth focusing on for
lowering emissions. About 90% of the world’s traded goods are moved around via shipping vessels,
according to the International Chamber of Shipping.
Some companies are expecting this new version of sails. Japanese shipping company, “K” Line
has placed orders for the Seawing kite, and the European Union has also invested more than $2 million
in funding.

C. It will be easily operated by crews. D. It will follow the cargo vessel at sea.
30. Why is the airline industry mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To confirm a prediction. B. To make a comparison.
C. To lead in a new topic. D. To analyze cause and effect.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. The shipping industry is getting popular again.

The deep-sea oil and gas industry has vast and costly facilities to maintain. Wells, other
equipment, and thousands of kilometers of pipelines must be inspected and repaired.
Now, cutting-edge underwater drones and robots are being developed that could make the work
safer and cheaper. Among them is Eelume, a six-meter-long, snake-like robot equipped with sensors
and a camera at each end. It can be kept at a station at depths of up to half a kilometer for six months,
without being brought back to the surface. The robot can travel up to 20 kilometers before needing to
return to its station to recharge.
Maintenance work at many deep-water wells and pipeline systems is already carried out by
unmanned vehicles. But these vehicles typically need to be transported to the offshore site on a fully
crewed ship and then remotely operated from onboard the surface ship. That can cost up to $100,000
per day, according to Pal Liljeback, chief technology officer with Eelume Subsea Intervention, which
developed the robot. Liljeback says that by “enabling the robot to become a subsea resident living at
a station, it can be mobilized at any time to do inspections, thereby reducing the need for costly
surface ships”.
Eelume can work autonomously on tasks assigned from a control room onshore, and send back
video and data. Its snake-like design allows it to work in small spaces and wriggle (扭动) its body to
stay in place in strong currents. By staying under the sea, it can carry out tasks whatever the conditions
on the surface of the ocean.
The global underwater robotics market is expected to be worth around $7 billion in 2025,
according to analysts, and other companies are in the process of commercializing new deep-sea drone
and robot technology. Eelume Subsea Intervention will carry out final testing on the seabed later this
year at the Asgard oil and gas field. It expects to put its first snake robots into use next year and hopes
to have up to 50 in oceans around the world by 2027.
32. What is one feature of Eelume
A. It can travel nearly 40 kilometers before recharging. B. It can dive as deep as 500 meters.
C. It works mainly around the station. D. It works for 6 months on one charge.
{#{QQABKQSAgggIQBIAAAgCUQFCCgGQkACAAIoOwAAIoAAAgANABCA=}#}
33. What is the problem with unmanned vehicles
A. They are too costly to maintain.
B. They are hard to operate remotely.
C. They require transportation to and from work.
D. They have to work on a fully crewed ship all the time.
34. What can be expected of Eelume in the future
A. It will face a lot of competitors. B. It will be worth around $ 7 billion.
C. It will be put on the market in 2027. D. It will require no further tests.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Eelume is the new choice for constructing pipelines.
B. Maintenance work on the ocean floor is a risky job.
C. Unmanned vehicles marketing has seen strong growth.
D. A snake robot is on its way for underwater tasks.
第二节
It is commonplace to come across instances of students or young professionals of the same age
groups renting together. 36 More young adults are now choosing intergenerational housing
arrangements, living with people in their 60s and 70s.
Intergenerational housing whereby Gen Zers and Millennials rent a room from an elderly
homeowner is not limited to a particular region. 37
In recent years, the high cost of living makes it nearly impossible for young adults to find
affordable accommodations in major urban areas. 38 In fact, many universities develop such
intergenerational housing programs. For example, Des Moines-based Drake University offers its
music students a chance to live rent-free at one regional senior living center, provided they perform
certain chores for the elderly residents.
39 Many feel staying with seniors helps them learn life lessons, such as financial and
home ownership responsibilities. They find the arrangement great for studying and decompressing
(解压) after work as the homes are usually quiet and orderly. They also find such arrangements much
better than staying with a loud, dirty roommate!
The elderly find renting their homes to young people a win-win proposition. They have someone
able and energetic for company and the additional income helps them offset (抵消) the cost of home
ownership. 40
A. It is now widespread in many parts of the U.S.
B. Living with the elderly is challenging for the young.
C. However, recently, a different trend has been observed.
D. It drives the demand for intergenerational housing arrangements.
E. Nowadays, many young people prefer to live independently after finishing school.
F. The students find living with seniors better than sharing rooms with several roommates.
G. Another person in an empty home also relieves the loneliness many old people experience.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mohan was excited. His father had finally declared him old enough to help take the sheep to herd.
It was no ordinary herding, though. Mohan and his father and other shepherds (牧羊人) moved high
up into the mountains and stayed on the pastures (牧场) with their flocks for six long months.
It was not an easy life. Far away from home, the men were surrounded by forests that were filled
with dangerous animals, such as bears, tigers, and leopards (豹).
As Mohan bid his mother and sister goodbye, he tried to look as grown-up as possible. Mohan,
his father, and their sheepdog, Sona, set off along the dusty track with their sheep. Soon they were
joined by other shepherds and their flocks. The group climbed for three days until they reached the
half-dry bed of a river. “Let’s part up here,” said the oldest shepherd.
Mohan and his father, along with Kishan, a neighbor, took their sheep northward. As night fell,
everything seemed peaceful. Mohan sat closer to Sona for warmth. His father and Kishan had taken
their flocks to different ends of the pasture.
Suddenly, Sona started to bark. Mohan looked up to see his father’s sheep rushing down the slope.
Something was wrong. He waited for the sheep to reach him. Then he turned to Sona and said, “Stay
and guard the sheep. I must look for Father.”
Mohan picked up a lantern and his shepherd’s stick and hurried in the direction from which the
sheep had come. “Father, where are you ” he called out. Then came another sound that froze Mohan’s
blood. Mohan shouted, “Father!” A steady voice answered, “I’m here.”
Mohan rushed up a slope and almost fell into a ditch (沟) on the other side. He stopped just in
time and found himself looking straight into the eyes of a snow leopard. Mohan was frozen with terror.
“Mohan, use your lantern.” His father’s voice shook Mohan’s fear out of him. Mohan looked
down and saw his father lying in the ditch, holding a lamb.

Dear chief editor,
I’m Li Hua from China, a senior high school student.
Reader’s Digest has been one of my favorites as a great help to my English since junior high
school. However, the content about China’s scenic spots is obviously insufficient. After all, China is
a great country with a vast territory, an enormous population, a long history and numerous scenic
spots worth a visit. If Reader’s Digest includes the introduction to China’s tourist attractions, it will
be able to attract the attention of more readers globally.
I would appreciate it if you would like to consider my proposal thoughtfully. Looking forward to
your reply.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
Mohan knew he had to act fast. Waving the lantern, he rushed towards the animal, but his foot
slipped and he fell. His lantern crashed into a rock. A line of flaming oil snaked up the ground towards
the leopard, and the animal moved back with a roar. Mohan thought quickly. He took off his shirt and
hooked it onto his shepherd’s stick. Then he set the shirt on fire and ran shouting at the big cat. The
leopard leaped backward in surprise and, with a flash of its tail, disappeared from sight.
Mohan put out the fire and then climbed into the ditch. He saw that his father had hurt his ankle.
“Come, Father, hold on to my shoulder,” said Mohan. “I’ll help you climb out.” Mohan’s father put
one arm around his son. He held the lamb with the other. Just then Kishan arrived with his dogs.
“What happened ” he cried. Mohan’s father held tightly to Mohan. “Nothing,” he whispered.
“Nothing that my son could not handle.”
