三、阅读理解(本题有15小题,每小题2分,共计30分)

Why are your study habits different from those of your friends Why do you seem to
learn faster in some classes while more slowly in others One reason you may not know
is that people have different learning types. Scientists say there are three different
learning types: visual (视觉的), auditory(听觉的) and kinesthetic(动觉的).
2
{#{QQABIQaAogAAQAIAAQgCQQXyCAKQkAEACCoOgBAMsAAAAANABCA=}#}
Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information
from pictures, graphs(图表) and videos, you are probably a visual learner. You're
not good at copying down what the teacher says in class. Never mind. You can
draw graphs or pictures instead, if you find that works better for you.
Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to easily remember things by
hearing them, then you are probably an auditory learner. You must listen carefully
while the teacher is speaking because it's the easiest way for you to learn.
Sometimes you may find that taking notes stops you from listening carefully. After
class, you can write down what you remember or borrow your friends' notes to
copy.
Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with
your hands, you are probably a kinesthetic learner. Taking notes by writing can
make you pay close attention to information as you receive it. Of course, you can
learn best by making full use of labs or other class activities.
Hope you learn better by knowing what your personal learning type is.

In the middle of the first term of school, the whole seventh grade was tested for basic
skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart
was not in school, but in the woods.
One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve! Pay
attention!”Steve turned to look at her, fixing his eyes on Miss White, as she began to go
over the test results for the seventh grade.“You all did pretty well,”she told the
class,“except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…”She hesitated,
her eyes searching his face. “…The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my
class!”She just stared at Steve. Steve dropped his eyes.
After that, it was war! Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the
punishments became more serious, he remained stubborn(固执的,倔强的).

“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“You're smart enough! You'll see a change!”Nothing touched him.
“Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!”Nothing.
“Steve! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it!Someone cared about him Steve went home from
school, thoughtful, that afternoon. Walking into the house, he found both parents were

The following Monday he arrived at school on time, and he waited for Miss White to
enter the classroom. She walked in, all smiles! God, she was beautiful!

through the test and was the first to hand in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss
White took his paper. Obviously puzzled, she began to look it over. Miss White's face
was in total shock! The smartest boy in the seventh grade had just passed his first test!
From that moment, nothing was the same for Steve. Life at home remained the
same, but life still changed. He discovered that not only could he learn, but he was
good at it!

What can we learn from the special, very successful people in the world who make the
impossible possible
Lesson 1: Ways of creative thinking are needed.
Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg both dropped out of college. They prefer to teach
themselves because they like to develop their own ways of thinking. They think that
standard (标准化的)ways of teaching might stop people from being creative and having
new ideas.
Lesson 2: The answer might not be what you expect.
Find your answers from facts —— not start with an expectation of what you will
find. Stephen Jacobsen from Northwestern University believed what he was taught: that

water on Earth came from icy comets(彗星) or planets which hit into Earth.
However, by studying a special rock, he discovered that it acts just like a sponge(海
绵). This suggests that Earth's water may have come from inside, driven to the surface
to form the oceans, by geological activity.
“I had a pretty hard time making others believe it,”he said. “But thinking about the
fact that you may be the first person to see something for the first time doesn't happen
very often. When it does, it's amazing.”
Lesson 3: A little luck goes a long way.
Years of planning went into a recent achievement in space travel. The European
Space Agency’s “Philae”, a robot landing craft, met up with Comet 67P, which is 480
million kilometers away. The trip from Earth by“Philae”had taken ten years!
The scientists had no idea what the surface of the comet would be like. If the landing
failed, it would be impossible to get information from the spacecraft. Twenty years of
work would have been wasted.
When“Philae”tried to land, it bounced(弹起) away from the comet's icy surface twice.
Luckily, however, “Philae”landed successfully and began sending information back to
Earth.
( )38. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg left college because ______.
A. they preferred to learn by themselves
B. they needed standard ways of teaching
C. their teachers didn't like their new ideas
D. their teachers weren't able to teach them
( )39. In Lesson 2, the writer mainly wants to tell us that ______.
A. we should get answers from facts
B. we can believe what we are taught
C. it's hard to make others believe something
D. an expectation can help get an answer in research
( )40. The example of “Philae” in Lesson 3 shows that ______.
A. Comet 67P is not far away from Earth
B. it took “Philae”20 years to reach Comet 67P
C. “Philae” landed on Comet 67P with a little luck
D. scientists know nothing about the surface of Comet 67P
( )41. The best title for this passage is ______.
A. Ways of Discovering. B. Lessons for Success
C. Ways of Being Special. D. Lessons for Experiments

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships.
For example, in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet
it also has other uses. A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same
meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness.
It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion(困惑 ) across cultures. For
example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual
and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public
places(although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that
5
{#{QQABIQaAogAAQAIAAQgCQQXyCAKQkAEACCoOgBAMsAAAAANABCA=}#}
Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don't
smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is usually used to cover painful
feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions(情感 ), but we should not try to “read” people from
another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that
members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another
does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural
differences in facial expressions. For example, in public and in formal situations many
Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends,
Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to generalize(概括) about Americans and facial expressions because
of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural
backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The
key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we
judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading”the
other person incorrectly.
( )42. What does the smile usually mean in the US
A. Joy. B. Politeness. C. Love. D. Thankfulness.
( )43. The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to show that smile can ______.
A. show friendliness to strangers B. be used to hide true feelings
C. be used in wrong places D. show personal habits
( )44. What should we do before trying to“read”people
A. Find out what they will do next.
B. Find out about their past experience.
C. Understand their cultural backgrounds.
D. Learn about their relations with others.
( )45. What would be the best title for the text
A. Appearance and Personality B. Smiles and Relationships
C. Habits and Emotions D. Facial Expressions

Knowing how and when to say goodbye is often difficult, even in informal
situations. But learning to say goodbye is a skill that will help you maintain(维持)
your relationships and let people know you care.
71 When you're at any kind of party or gathering, or even a one-on-one
conversation, it can be difficult to get away. Learning to recognize good opportunities
(机会) to leave will make a short-term goodbye much easier. If more than half the
people have left, it might be a good time to leave. Find the host, or your friends, give a
wave to the room, and leave.
7
{#{QQABIQaAogAAQAIAAQgCQQXyCAKQkAEACCoOgBAMsAAAAANABCA=}#}
Leave when you want. 72 If you're ready to go home, just say, “Well, I'll be going.
See you all later!”
Watch body language. If the host of a party starts cleaning up,or withdraws(退
出)from the conversation, gather your friends or belongings and make your exit. 73
74 Even saying “See you at school tomorrow,” or “Can’t wait to see you again
at Christmas” keeps the goodbye light and focused forward. If you haven't already made
plans, use it as an opportunity to make them. Even saying “See you soon” suggests just
that.
Tell the truth. It can be tempting(诱人的 ) to come up with a“good excuse” when
you're ready to leave. You don't need to. If you want to leave, just say, “I'm going to go
now, see you later.” 75 If you want to withdraw from a conversation you're ready to
end, you can just simply say“I'll talk to you later.”
A. You don't need to wait for any special signal(信号,暗示).
B. Make plans to see each other again.
C. Recognize when to leave.
D. If someone starts checking their watch, or seems restless, it's also time to leave.
