We sat on the bus waiting while other passengers piled on. A blond-haired girl, about nineteen years old, took the seat in front of us. The bus driver followed behind her. He demanded her fare.
"You pay $40 or get off the bus!" the driver said.
"I paid already. Yesterday, online, " the girl insisted.
"No, no record of it!" the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. "See. No pay! You pay, or you must get off. " He angrily pointed to the exit door.
"But I don't have money. And I paid already. Please. ”
The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. After failing to get through, he was getting angrier with the girl. So he cut the call and didn't try.
"No, you have not paid. You must pay. ”
"But please, I don't have any money on me. I must get to LA today. Please. "
Tears streamed down her face.
I had boarded a bus headed to Los Angeles. I was very excited about experiencing LA. My dream of visiting Disney Land was about to come true. But while I sat there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this young girl was in tears, with a man standing over her, demanding money.
I wasn't sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth It wouldn't be the first time someone had extracted money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Did she really not have any money Maybe the bus driver would show some sympathy and allow her to sort thepayment out later
But no, the bus driver continued to demand she pay $40 or get off the bus. The young girlinsisted that she didn't have enough money for the fare and had no one she could contact forhelp. It seemed the driver would throw her off the bus.

It was a chilly Friday night, and I had just returned from climbing one of the red rocks of Sedona. My father telephoned me as I walked through the arches to my dorm room and told me that my mother had been in a terrible car crash and had been taken to the intensive care unit (重症监护病房) of a nearby hospital.
When I got to the hospital, my father led me down a wide hallway with machines all around. A strong smell of medicine brought a sick feeling to my already turning stomach. As I turned into my mother’sward, the cadaverous (形容枯槁的) condition of her body shocked me. Her face had swollen, her eyes had huge dark bruise, and she had tubes down her throat and in her arms. Gently holding her cold swollen hands, I said “hi” in a calm voice, controlling my urge to cry out.
She kept looking at me as she pounded her hand against the bed, looking painful. I turned my face away from her, trying to hide the tears that were rolling down my face. That was when it struck me that I really might lose my mother.
From that night on, my life completely changed. Up to that point, I’d had the luxury of just being a kid, having to deal with only the exaggerated melodramas of teenage life. As my mother struggled first to stay alive and then to relearn to walk, my sense of priorities changed sharply. My mother needed me. The trials and trouble of my daily life at school, which had seemed so important before, now appeared insignificant. My mother and I had faced death together, and life took on a new meaning for both of us.
After a week of treatment in intensive care,my mother’s condition improved enough to be moved to a regular hospital ward. She was finally out of danger but, because her legs had been crushed, there was doubt whether she would be able to walk again. I was just grateful that she was alive. Two months later, a sort of hospital suite was set up in our family room, and she was allowed to come home.

Julia spent most days doing the cleaning in a commercial building with a fancy supermarket, a gym, a spa (温泉疗养中心), and a few fast food places. . It was fairly populated, and people often showed kindness to her.
She often bought loaves of old-day bread in the supermarket and the employees there were familiar with her. During her break time, she liked to observe people, especially families. Julia often saw a lady in the building. Usually the lady went to the gym first and then headed to the spa. Later, she’d come out dressed like a manager. One day, the woman took her kid with her. The little boy was no more than eight years old and didn’t look happy to be there with his mom.
“Jimmy, come on. I have to go to the gym now and hurry to get to work on time later,” the mother said in a rush.
The boy protested with a sad voice, “What am I going to do while you’re working out ” “Just sit still and read your book in the waiting area,” the mother replied.
“Can you at least buy me some candy You promised earlier,” the boy complained. “I don’t have time right now. Please hurry inside,” the mother answered.
Then the mother took the son’s hand and rushed into the gym. Julia witnessed this all and was reminded of her own similar busy life in the past. She was once also a young busy woman. Her personal and work-related matters always came first in her life. She failed to spare enough time for her son and attach enough importance to his wishes. When she realized her problems, it was too late. Her son lost his life in an accident, leaving her with deep sadness and regret. To make matters worse, her company went bankrupt (破产) soon after.
Reflecting on her past life, Julia had a thought. Though she was not wealthy, she wanted to do something nice for the boy: buy him a bar of chocolate.

Next to our house lived an old couple, who, accustomed to country life, were unwilling to move to the city to live with their son and stuck in a lonely existence for many years. It seemed that they didn’t feel like making any new connections with others, including their next-door neighbours.
The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor (流言,传言) was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!” The rosebushes crawled along the fence. Or rather, they served as a fence between our house and theirs, overgrowing the support.
I was eleven at the time and the oldest of our family girls. A suitable playing court was a headache problem for us when we felt like playing softball games, which was our favourite sport then. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we secretly enjoyed annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose.
One day, we had a softball game in our yard. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose sprang out and ran toward Mary. She screamed angrily, “Look at what you’ve doneto our family’s roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!”
Hearing this, my sisters and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have told you not to play softball near those e outside right now and help me fix them.” “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple,” we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom just glared at us. We followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad. And it wasn’t her nose that was red, but her eyes.

Taylor Hash wanted to be a career pilot. She had just started building up hours of flight time when disaster struck. As she guided the Diamond Star plane off the runway at Oakland County International airport, on her third-ever independent flight, the front tyre (轮胎) of her plane fell off.
Taylor was unaware at that point that she had just lost crucial landing equipment. “I didn’t feel anything on the takeoff roll (起飞滑跑).” she said.
Experienced pilot Chris Yates, though, saw something on the takeoff roll and immediately took action. He knew that Taylor would have to make a difficult emergency landing. He radioed the control tower and said, “The Diamond Star that just took off lost its nose (头部) wheel tyre on the runway.”
But the control tower operators didn’t know what to do. They’d never seen such a thing happen before. Yates asked them to put him through to Taylor so he could help her.
When Taylor learned what had happened, she was in panic. With only 57 total fight hours under her belt, she didn’t know what her options were and could only imagine how this was going to end.
“I didn’t know what to do in that moment,” said Taylor later. “I’m just panicking and figuring out how I’m going to land this plane safely.”
But Yates knew what to do. He knew that the most important thing would be to keep Taylor calm so that she could follow his instructions effectively.
Yates started by reassuring (使安心) Taylor that everything was going to turn out just fine: “Taylor, this is Chris Yates. My daughter’s name is Taylor, and I taught her to fly! We’re gonna be just fine. Just take your time.” He told her that she could circle the field until she was ready to land. “When you touch down, I just want that stick (操纵杆) all the way back. You’re gonna hold that stick back like you don’t want that nose to touch,” he coached her.

Suddenly, a messy grey-haired woman with a weathered face stood up. Dressed in a ragged shirt and faded trousers, she looked in need herself. She stepped forward and stood directly in front of the driver. Without asking any questions, she didn't doubt the girl as I had. “This is for her,” she said, holding out forty dollars and pointing to the girl. Surprised, the bus driver nodded, and took the money. The young girl thanked her for her kind offer.
At the next rest stop, I noticed that woman had no money for food. Approaching her, I said, “That was a really kind thing you did for that girl. Here, I want to share what you paid.” When I gave her the note, she looked at me with gratitude, saying that was her last forty dollars! When I was shocked by her act of kindness, a couple of others came to surround her with their money. Actually, her forty dollars made a great difference!

My mother’s return home was a blessing for us all, but it meant some unaccustomed responsibilities for me. I would feed her, bathe her and help her to the bathroom. It struck me that I was pretty much playing the role of mother to my own mother. The difficult part for me was trying to be always upbeat, and to keep my mother’s spirits up when she became frustrated with the pain and her inability to do simple things by herself. Looking after my mother wasn’t much fun, but it felt good to be there when my mother really needed me.
My mother’s reliance on me changed our relationship. In the past, we had more than our share of the strains of mother-daughter relationships. The accident threw us into a relationship of interdependence. To get my mother back, I had to help regain her strength and ability to resume an independent life. She had to accept my help as well as the fact that I was no longer a child. Since then, we have become the closest friends, genuinely listening to one another and truly enjoying each other’s company.

67.Ruby walked over to my mother, we girls holding our breath. We waited to see who would shout first and what terrible things would be said. “We are sorry about the flowers. The girls will fix them and help weed the roses.” said Mom. My sisters and I looked at each other in horror, but Ruby smiled through her tears. “I know we’re particular about these roses, but they’re very special because they remind me of my mother.” Soon both women were down on their knees examining the damaged bushes together.
A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. My mother and Ruby worked together on the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I. A friendship was formed between the families. Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge.
