In a world where acts of kindness often go unnoticed, a good story that has been discovered reminds us of the power of care and the effect it can have on someone’s life.
It all started with a “Kindness Week Challenge” given to Brennan by his 8th-grade teacher, Ms. Watkins. Little did he know that this challenge would lead to a wonderful friendship with 84-year-old Ms. Ann.
Brennan’s promise to send his little attractive things every day for a week developed a habit of checking up on Ms. Ann and sending gifts regularly(定期地), long after the challenge was over.
Their friendship has now lasted for over five years, and Brennan still visits Ms. Ann every month with flowers, cakes, chocolates, cards and more.
They talk about everything from his high school life to his college goals. The pair has found that they share a common love of chocolates. Ms. Ann always hopes to hear about what he’s doing and loves to share her own stories from a different time. They have become the best friends, with Brennan treating her as his great-grandmother.
Brennan’s mom, Traci, takes pride in her son. She said, “The best thing a teenager can do is to take care of the elderly. I’m so glad my son has added more sunshine to Ms. Ann’s life. I hope he always remembers the joy he’s brought her, and his fun talks with her, keeps his kind heart, and thinks of others.”
Ms. Ann’s daughter Emma, with her husband Gould, has a 2-year-old son. They are thankful for Brennan’s friendship as they cannot always be with Ms. Ann. Brennan’s kind heart has brought more sunshine into Ms. Ann’s life, and her encouraging words have helped to inspire(启发)him in return.

Every child in Montana will have a chance to get free books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library which is in partnership with the state’s first lady, Susan Gianforte.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program to improve childhood literacy and a love for reading. The program provides free age-appropriate (与年龄相符的) books to children from birth to age five, regardless of the money their family makes. By providing free books and improving early reading ability, the program hopes to improve educational outcomes and create a foundation (基础) for a lifelong love of learning in young children.
“I’m so excited to be starting my Imagination Library widely in Montana!” said Parton. “I want to send my very special thanks to first lady Susan Gianforte for her partnership in making this amazing gift available (可获得的) to children and families across the state.”
Parton’s Imagination Library will provide a free book each month to any Montana child, ages 0 to 5 years old, who is registered with the organization.
“The ability of reading and writing helps the kids a lot with their development. When parents read to their kids or when the kids read alone, books attract them, fire their imagination, and spark their curiosity,” Gianforte said.
8.What does the underlined word “literacy” in paragraph 2 mean
A.The idea of sharing.
B.The habit of listening.
C.The skill of solving problems
D.The ability of reading and writing.
9.How does the program help young children build a lifelong love of learning
A.By selling books statewide.
B.By working together with Gianforte.
C.By improving their early reading ability.
D.By organizing learning activities for their parents.
10.At what age can a child in Montana get a free book each month
A.4. B.6. C.7. D.8.

Perhaps the most challenging thing about earthquakes is the great uncertainty around where and when they are likely to strike, which makes taking action that may save lives challenging.
Earthquakes bring about redistribution of mass and this generates observable changes of the Earth’s gravitational field, measurable using specialized instruments. High accuracy gravity measurements may provide a useful tool to help with managing the risk by identifying which faults (断层) are under stress and most likely to be active. By monitoring the progression of fault movements, it’s possible to get a medium-term outlook on which areas are most likely to be affected when the next earthquake happens.
Current earthquake warning systems are based on networks which detect the early arrival “P” seismic (地震的) waves prior to the arrival of the more destructive waves, but are unable to respond before the ground movements have already started, greatly limiting how advanced the warning can be.
While a warning caused by a gravity signal might only give a few additional seconds, such a warning can provide extra time to allow the public to take preventative action.
However, making measurements of gravity with sufficient accuracy, long-term stability and data sampling rate to achieve these signals is of course challenging. Detection of small signals for early warning systems is greatly limited by the background seismic noise which affects the sensor readings. Obtaining measurements which are stable over long periods of time and consistent between different sensors is difficult too.
The Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Timing led by the University of Birmingham is developing sensors which meet these challenges by employing the quantum (量子) behaviour of cold atoms to measure gravity accurately. As well as the cold atom sensors being extremely sensitive to small changes in the gravitational field, the identical (完全相同的) nature of atoms makes them ideal test masses which give consistent results.
Furthermore, by measuring two separated atom clouds at the same time, common background seismic noise can be controlled, which helps to overcome the limitations of seismic noise and allows fast and accurate measurements.
12.What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2
A.How earthquakes are formed. B.How people can better predict earthquakes.
C.What is used to monitor earthquakes. D.What is the way to identify active faults.
13.What affects the accuracy of early warning systems
A.The number of sensors. B.The temperature of atoms.
C.The background seismic noise. D.The strength of seismic waves.
14.What makes atoms perfect test masses
A.They have the same nature. B.They are tiny.
C.They are sensitive to temperature. D.They can remove the seismic noise.
15.What is the purpose of the text
A.To display the uncertainty of earthquakes.
B.To show the challenges in detecting earthquakes.
C.To discuss the accuracy of earthquake warning systems.
D.To introduce a technology to improve earthquake detection.

The Feynman Technique(费曼学习法)is a powerful method that you can use to learn anything faster because it forces you to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else talk about it. You can take the following five simple steps to study better.
·Find out the topic you want to learn. 16 Otherwise, you'll end up jumping between topics without developing a deeper understanding of any of them.
·Explain the topic as if teaching a sixth-grader. This step is the heart of the FeynmanTechnique— 17 .This requires you to meet the child at their level of understanding by using the simplest way.
.Identify areas of improvement in your explanation. You’ll need to critically(批判性地)review the explanation you cane up with in Step Two 18 . Try to find any knowledge gaps, together with any areas where you felt that you couldn't explain the topic simply.
·Improve and optimiez(优化) your explanation. Think about all the knowledge gaps and otherareas of improvement you found before. 19
· Repeat the steps until you’ve achieved mastery of the topic. Keep going through each step you're fully satisfied with your explanation. 20 , and that is why going through all the prior snnjust once is usually not enough to achieve topic mastery.
A.Use those to improve your explanation
B.To do so, take a critical look at your explanation
C.Make sure that your explanation is interest-based
D.Your explanations need to be short and to the point
E.The Feynman Technique works best with a repeat
F.It’s important that you clearly know the topics you’re trying to learn
G.Explaining the topic simply enough to be understood by a sixth-grade student

On February 15, 1910, Irena Krzyzanowska was born in Warsaw, Poland. Irena studied Polish literature at Warsaw University, and eventually joined the Polish Socialist Party.
Then World War II broke out. It was 1940 and Germany had taken over. The Germans had begun shifting Warsaw’s population of 380,000 Jews to a separate Ghetto (聚居区). Irena worked in the Warsaw health department and was allowed to enter the Ghetto.
Irena was a member of Zegota (援助犹太人委员会), a secret organization set up by the Polish government. The goal of Zegota was to rescue Polish Jews. Irena’s job was to rescue as many children as she could.
Regardless of the danger it posed, Irena began aiding Jews in earnest (真挚地) in the early 1940s. She and her sympathetic co-workers created more than 3,000 false documents to help Jewish families, and that was just the beginning of the efforts.
Irena and her team began smuggling children out during these visits. They used various methods, such as hiding them in ambulances, leading them through sewer pipes or underground passages, even stuffing them into suitcases or boxes that they’d then take through the courtyard to the non-Jewish area.
Irena was helped by a network of over 30 volunteers, most of whom were women. Their hope was to get the children back to their families once the war was won. Irena and her helpers noted the names of the children on cigarette papers and sealed them in glass bottles. Then they buried the bottles in a friend’s garden for safekeeping. When the war was done, the bottles were dug up and the lists handed to Jewish representatives. Sadly, reuniting the children with their parents proved mostly impossible, as almost all had been killed in concentration camps.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
The Polish Government honored Irena many awards.

The Polish Government honored Irena many awards. She was honored for rescuing “the most defenseless victims — the Jewish children”. Many years later, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her effort to prevent Jewish children from being killed. Then, only a few years ago, a group of elderly people came to her and thanked her for her rescue. They were some of the thousands of children saved by Irena in the war. She said their happy life was the biggest prize to her.
She insisted that she did nothing special. “I was brought up to believe that a person must be rescued when drowning, regardless of religion and nationality.” She said the term “hero” encouraged her greatly. It gave her inspiration and determination to help those in danger. She said, however, her fellow workers were true heroes. Some of them sacrificed their lives in the rescue work. They were the people that really deserve respect and memory of the world.
