Every child who grows up in a big family needs a little peace sometimes. As a little girl, Nalini Nadkarni discovered one place where she could always find it. She would climb up into the tall trees around her home. There, high in the trees, she made herself a promise. One day, she would become someone who could use her love of trees to help protect them.
As she grew, she became interested in the rainforest. Looking up into the forest trees, Nalini thought there were surely things to be learned in the treetops. She was told, however, that there was nothing important to learn high above her head. Luckily, that didn't stop her. Instead, she used her rock climbing skills to safely reach the forest treetops. There, she discovered the whole ecosystem. It needed to be studied so scientists could get deeper understanding of the rainforest.
Dr Nadkarni also discovered the importance of canopy soil(树冠层土壤). When mosses(藓)and other plants that live on trees die, they slowly become canopy soil. The soil is nutrient-rich, and the whole ecosystem depends on it. Even the trees themselves take nutrients from canopy soil.
To create greater interest in forest studies, Dr Nadkarni really got creative. In the early 2000s, she bought second hand Barbie dolls and turned them into “forest Barbies”. Finally, Mattel, the company behind Barbie, used Dr Nadkarni’s idea to create dolls to make science interesting to children everywhere. Now, Dr Nadkarni can truly consider her childhood promise well kept.

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict.” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes—khaki pants and sports shirt—to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. "I'm working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative (保守的)dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Straus, and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee's morale(士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity.
Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”
28. Why does David Smith wear casual clothes now
A. They make him feel relaxed when working.
B. He cannot afford to buy expensive clothes.
C. He looks handsome in casual clothes.
D. He no longer works for any company.
29. What do we know from paragraph two
A. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.
B. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s.
C. “Dress-down Friday” was first given as a favor from employers.
D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.
30. According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE
A. Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code.
B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.
C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.
D. All the employers in the US are for casual office wear.
31.What is the author’s attitude to the casual wear
A. Subjective B. Favorable C. Objective D. Indifferent
D
Tesla’s self-driving cars have recently come under investigation as a report on crashes raises questions about their safety. Despite Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s claim that their Autopilot capability makes their cars “ extremely safer,” data suggests otherwise.
According to The Washington Post, the number of deaths and serious injuries associated with Tesla’s driver-assistance technology is higher than previously reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 736 crashes since 2019, with at least 17 of them being fatal. These figures include crashes involving both Autopilot, which allows cars to drive on highways without human intervention(干预), and the newer Full Self-Driving feature, which extends automation to city streets. However, these statistics can’t record incidents that were avoided due to the cars’ safety features. Additionally, when compared to the total number of car crashes that occurred last year, the number of crashes involving driver-assistance vehicles appears relatively small, but actually it’s not.
Tesla’s safety claims lack context as Autopilot is primarily designed for highways, while most accidents occur in more complex environments with cross-traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. Moreover, Tesla’s customer base consists mainly of wealthier individuals who live in communities with lower accident rates.
Concerns are raised by Tesla’s request to the NHTSA not to reveal whether Autopilot or Full Self-Driving was in use during fatal crashes. This lack of transparency (透明) prevents a comprehensive analysis of the incidents and raises questions about responsibility.
Safety exaggerations combined with Tesla’s aggressive marketing have led to accidents caused by drivers relying too heavily on the system. Full Self-Driving does not allow the car to fully drive itself, and drivers are expected to remain attentive and ready to intervene at all times. However, Tesla’s messaging may mislead some users into believing otherwise.
While a driverless future has the potential to be safer, it is crucial not to convince the public that underdeveloped capabilities are ready for widespread use. Tesla should address past problems, ensure their automation set can detect(检测) emergency vehicles, and be transparent with the public about the limitations of their technology.
32.What can we learn about Tesla’s driver-assistance-related crashes
A. 736 fatal cases of self-driving are recorded.
B. NHTSA focused on the crashes on highways.
C. The total number of car crashes is extremely small.
D. The incidents avoided are not counted in the crash statistics.
33.What can be inferred about Tesla’s safety claims
A. They are supported by comprehensive data.
B. They are based on limited driving environment.
C. They are restricted to the experiences of satisfied customers.
D. They have been proven to be accurate and reliable by NHTSA.
34.What can we know about Full Self-Driving
A. It is ill-received. B. It is well-developed.
C. It needs the driver to stay focused. D. It reduces the accidents greatly.
35.Which title best summarizes the content of this text
A. Concerns and Questions Surrounding Tesla’s “Self-Driving” Cars
B. Tesla’s Self-Driving Cars: The Safest Option of Driving on the Road
C. The Future of Self-Driving Cars: A Closer Look at Tesla’s Technology
D. Reconstruction and Revolution of Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving

Dear Tom,
How is everything going I’m Lihua, president of the Student Union. I’m thrilled to inform you that your painting has been chosen to be showcased/displayed at our upcoming painting exhibition themed “Beautiful China”.
Your artwork, titled “Robust Horse”, beautifully captures not only the physical features of the animal, but also its inner spirit and strength. Besides, the horse is so vivid that we can feel the power within its burning eyes, bared teeth and kicking hooves. (It seems that the horse can gallop off the paper!)
On behalf of the Student Union, I would like to express our heartfelt congratulations to you. Your successful entry into our exhibition will undoubtedly inspire other students to explore and appreciate the beauty of China.
Best regards,
Li Hua
续写:
The man just smiled and started to tell the truth. Actually, he intended to return her purse. Surprisingly, the story went in this way. When the man parked his car, he was attracted by a snap of a purse falling to ground from a lady's bag, whose owner failed to notice it at all. Before he could managed to remind her, she pulled her car away straightforward. Without delay, he began to chase her. Fortunately, she stopped somehow at last. After recalling what had happened indeed, he asked Sam to check the money in the purse which, as expected, was exactly the right amount!
Then, Sam was lost in thought and began to talk with the woman. “Madam, it is incorrect to judge one by the appearance” he said seriously. A wave of shame and guilt swept over the woman as she learned the truth. How could she misunderstand a man with a heart of gold Sincerely, she apologized to the man and asked whether she could offer him a reward for his kindness. “No, ma'am,” he cracked into a smile, “my grandma says a good deed is its own reward.” Interestingly, the man's reply still lingered in Sam's mind even now.
