Ideas of making the first week of high school easy
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day of high school. But you
will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high
school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I
don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as
how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to learn to deal with things and manage your
time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I had butterflies in my stomach, especially since I had been homeschooled
(家中教学) all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to
just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of
anyone.Upperclassmen (高年级学生) will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it
easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly.
After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
21. What can we infer (推断) from Sharon about high school?
A. Teachers are strict and demanding.
B. Students should make good use of their time.
C. Homework is not important.
D. Students should try to impress their teachers.
22. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school?
A. Anxious.
23. Who mentions the importance of friends?
A. Frank. B. Eddie.
B. Excited.
C. Bored.
C. David.
B
D. Relaxed.
D. Sharon.
Tyler was a troublesome student, who sat in the back row of the classroom. Every time I called him to
answer questions, he'd reply with a flip (轻率的) answer. If he got it wrong, he would get very angry.
Usually kids could sit quietly in class. However, Tyler was just loud. One day, Tyler was talking while
I was teaching. I said to him, “Tyler, why not join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?”
He got up from his chair, pushed it over, and shouted something I can't remember. I sent him to the office
and he received a week's out-of-school punishment.

The week was a wonderful time for me without the noisy Tyler, but when it came to an end, I began to
feel worried. So I came up with a plan. On the day of his return, I told him I wanted to start over with him.
If he felt like he was going to lose control in class, he could step outside the door for a moment.
From then on, Tyler was a changed student in my classroom. In fact he was a smart child and he even
stopped a fight between two students one day. And he never used the privilege (特权) to leave the class for
a moment. I believe that just letting him decide for himself made all the difference.
When the school year was over, he wrote me a thank-you note about how good the year had been for
him. I still have it today and find it very moving to reread when I get stressed about teaching.
24.When Tyler was talking in class, what did the teacher advise him to do?
A.go out of school
B.have his own discussion
C.join in their discussion
D.raise his hand and wait for his turn to speak
25.Tyler did all the following things EXCEPT________ .
A. leaving the class for a moment
B. sitting in the back row
C. stopping a fight between two students
D. not listening to teachers in class
26.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How the teacher felt about Tyler's thank-you note.
B. How the teacher dealt with Tyler's return.
C. How Tyler got the punishment.
D. How Tyler changed to be a good student.
C
The Internet will create the global village---you can make new friends all around the world. That, at
least, is what it promised us. The difficulty is that it did not take the human mind into account. The reality
is that we cannot keep relationships with more than a limited number of people. No matter how hard the
Internet tries to put you in communication, its best efforts will be defeated by your mind.
The problem is twofold. First, there is a limit on the number of people we can hold in mind and have a
meaningful relationship with. That number is about 150 and is set by the size of our brain. Second, the
quality of your relationships depends on the amount of time you invest(投入)in them. We invest a lot in a
small number of people and then distribute what's left among as many others as we can. The problem is that
if we invest little time in a person, our engagement with that person will decline (减弱) until eventually it
dies into "someone I once knew".
This is not, of course, to say that the Internet doesn't serve a socially valuable function. Of course it
does. But the question is not that it allows you to increase the size of your social circle to include the rest
of the world, but that you can keep your relationships with your existing friends going even though you
have to move to the other side of the world.
In one sense, that's a good thing. But it also has a disadvantage. If you continue to invest in your old
friends even though you can no longer see them, then certainly you aren't using your time to make new
friends where you now live. And I suspect that probably isn't the best use of your time. Meaningful
relationships are about being able to communicate with each other, face to face. The Internet will slow
down the rate with which relationships end, but it won't stop that happening eventually.
