In this country, we’re blessed with All 4, which gives us unlimited access to the shows from all Channel 4 TV channels. I love its free-to-air video-on-demand service. It is really a joy: I’m currently puzzling my way through a very dark spy series called Guardian of the Castle. I really love watching it.
The only limitation of All 4 is that the film or the show stops every 15 or so minutes and some ads appear. And here’s the thing: you cannot fast-forward them! It’s incredibly annoying.
As a kid, I used to like watching ads on TV; I think I even started recording them. I remember asking my confused parents if they used a particular camera, simply because in the ad there was a nice cartoon face on the camera. I fell out of the love with ads after an art lesson in middle school. My art teacher, Mr. Courts, said something about them just being a way of getting us to buy things we didn’t really want or need. He had a point. I never felt the same way about them again.
Now, it is very painful for me to watch them in the middle of an exciting spy series. During the three ad breaks, I forced myself to sit through the other night. There was a Lloyds Band ad featuring a black horse racing alongside delighted people to the sound of a Beatles track. It made me want to tie my TV to the tail of a galloping (飞驰的) horse, so I could never watch anything of the sort ever again. However, on the other hand, I know that All 4 offers free service just because it makes profits (利润) from ads. As a big fan of All 4, I have to get rid of my dissatisfaction and tolerate (忍受) its limitation since it really offers me films and shows I like.
4. What can we know about All 4 from the first two paragraphs
A. Its programmes aren’t very interesting.
B. Its users are forced to watch ads.
C. Its shows cannot be fast-forwarded.
D. Its users are charged much for the service.
5. What did the author think of ads when he was a kid
A. He found them interesting. B. He thought them quite silly.
C. He regarded them as confusing. D. He considered them misleading.
6. What served as a turning point in the author’s attitude toward ads
A. His improvement in cartoon drawing.
B. His parents’ purchasing a special camera.
C. His art teacher’s negative comment on ads.
D. His recording the camera advertisement.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. Time is money. B. Every coin has two sides.
C. Hope for the best; prepare for the worst. D. A good beginning makes a good ending.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. B
【解析】

【5题详解】

Buying clothes for special events, hiding the price tickets and returning them to the store the next day has for years been the method of money-saving shoppers. Today people are doing it just for social media.
A survey conducted by the credit card company Barclaycard showed that nearly one in ten UK shoppers admits to buying clothing only to post photos on social media for likes. After the “outfit (装束) of the day” (OOTD) makes it online, they return it back to the store. According to Barclaycard, the “try before you buy” policy of online retailers (零售商) — where people pay for clothing they order online after they try it on at home — could be leading to this rising trend.
But the rise of social media means that everyone, not just superstars, expects to build and maintain a personal brand. Since we’re recording our lives and posting them online for public judgement, getting caught in the same outfits more than once should be avoided. And the cost of all those outfits of the day adds up, which makes returning a popular way.
There are brands that make clothes specially for social media shoppers, like Fashion Nova. “These are clothes made for social media: meant to be worn once, photographed and abandoned,” Allison P. Davis wrote in her report about the brand. Another favourite of the social media age is Rent the Runway, which lets customers rent designer clothing for a fee.
Some, however, are moving in the opposite direction. Groups promoting “work uniforms” have increased greatly in recent years, aiming to free women from “the trouble of clothing decisions”. The concept of the “capsule wardrobe (胶囊衣橱)”, which calls for purchasing a small number of high-quality pieces instead of lots of trendy throwaway clothes, is also making a comeback.
8. What does the survey by Barclaycard suggest
A. Britons follow the fashion stars closely.
B. Some Britons over-order and return clothes.
C. Britons try on clothes before online purchases.
D Some Britons send outfits back after taking pictures.
9. What’s Fashion Nova’s special service
A. Renting top designers’ clothes.
B. Offering customers single-use clothes.
C. Creating unique shopping experiences.
D. Helping shoppers improve their clothing style.
10. What’s the idea behind the “capsule wardrobe”
A. Better fewer, but better. B. Less addition, but more enjoyment.
C. Less uniform, and more freedom. D. More choices, and less trouble.
11. Why does the author write the text
A. To compare different wearing trends.
B. To introduce Britain’s new wearing trend.
C. To support buying high-quality clothes.
D. To criticize the “try before you buy” policy.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B

D
Have you ever felt so tired after staying up for a night that even coffee doesn’t give you the energy that you need You may have an energy drink, but the benefits of drinking one are heavily outweighed by the risks.
In the past years, more and more studies have found the deadly effect of energy drinks on our bodies. The sugar, caffeine and energy supplements (补充物) in energy drinks make up a deadly mixture of ingredients that can affect your heart function and send you to the hospital!
A study by the university of Bonn, Germany found that frequent consumption of energy drinks can greatly change the way our heart functions. The study went on to say that consuming energy drinks often causes significantly increased heart contractions (收缩) in adults, which has the potential of putting you at risk of irregular heartbeats.
It is possible that many people haven’t noticed the alarming side effects of energy drinks because of the way they are labelled (贴标签). Most energy drinks contain between 80 milligrams to over 350 milligrams of caffeine, sugar and energy supplements. When an energy drink is marked as a diet supplement, it may be put on the market without a “nutrition facts” label, which would show the harmful supplements that are in the drink. However, even if energy drinks are officially accepted by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they don’t have to show the number of supplements.
Energy drinks may be widely available, but they aren’t the healthiest or safest choice for your body. To stay naturally energised, get organised and stay on top of your work so that you aren’t having to stay up all night to complete tasks. If you’d like a natural energy increase, you could make time for some exercise, which will give you all of the energy you need!
12. Which of the following is the side effect of energy drinks
A. Gaining weight. B. Having headaches.
C. Causing sleeplessness. D. Hurting people’s hearts.
13. Why are many people unaware of the harmful effects of energy drinks
A. Because they don’t read the label carefully.
B. Because FDA thinks they’re healthy drinks.
C. Because the harmful materials are not labelled.
D. Because factories of energy drinks lie to drinkers.
14. What does the underlined expression “stay on top of” mean
A. Perform well in. B. Get highly paid for.
C. Remain in control of. D. Be on the highest point of.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Different Ways to Stay Energetic
B. Many People Enjoy Energy Drinks
C. The Materials Energy Drinks Contain
D. Energy Drinks Could Send You to Hospital
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. D
根据第二段中“In the past years, more and more studies have found the deadly effect of energy drinks on our bodies. The sugar, caffeine and energy supplements (补充物) in energy drinks make up a deadly mixture of ingredients that can affect your heart function and send you to the hospital!(在过去的几年里,越来越多的研究发现了能量饮料对我们身体的致命影响。功能饮料中的糖、咖啡因和能量补充剂组成了一种致命的混合物,会影响你的心脏功能,把你送进医院!)”可知,能量饮料对我们的身体有着致命的影响,其中一项副作用是影响心脏功能。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“It is possible that many people haven’t noticed the alarming side effects of energy drinks because of the way they are labelled (贴标签). (可能很多人没有注意到能量饮料令人担忧的副作用,只是因为它们的标签。)”以及“However, even if energy drinks are officially accepted by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they don’t have to show the number of supplements.(然而,即使能量饮料被美国食品和药物管理局(FDA)正式接受,它们也不必显示补充剂的数量。)”可知,许多人不知道能量饮料的有害影响,因为有害物质没有标签。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“To stay naturally energised, get organized(为了保持自然的活力,有条理)”可知,此处与划线词构成并列,同时根据划线词后面的内容“so that you aren’t having to stay up all night to complete tasks.
D选项“Energy Drinks Could Send You to Hospital(能量饮料会把你送进医院)”概括文章主要内容,符合标题。故选D。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. Dear Catherine,

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Catherine,
In reply to your inquiry, I’m writing to offer my opinion on whether our daily presentation will be cancelled due to the limited teaching time.
As we all know, every coin has two sides. The daily presentation has successfully ignited our interest in English and offered us a fabulous platform to show ourselves. Nevertheless, there are disadvantages coming along with it. A presentation in class occasionally takes up too much time, leaving your teaching plan disrupted.
From where I stand, the daily presentation should have its place in class, which might be organised twice a week and last less than 5 minutes each time. Not only can our lessons go smoothly but also we can benefit a lot from it.
I sincerely hope my advice will be of some help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Catherine.
In reply to your inquiry. I’m writing to offer my advice on whether the daily presentation should be cancelled.
Indeed the daily presentation is of vital significance as it provides a fabulous arena for students to enhance English ability and broaden their horizons. Nevertheless, there are disadvantages that come along with it. Not only does a presentation spare less time for teaching, students are forced to waste way too much time. This situation is urgent in view of the approaching of Gaokao.
Thus, I advocate for change. The presentation could still have its place in class, while it’s flexibly given limited time. In this way, we can keep a balance between them.
I sincerely hope that the above could be taken into your consideration. Thank you for seeking our opinions.
Yours.
Li Hua
Dear. Mrs Catherine.
I’m Li Hua. Given that you are wondering whether to cancel the daily presentation due to the tightly-scheduled English class. I’m writing to share with you some of my perspectives.
As an old saying goes, every coin has two sides. In a consequence, there are disadvantages and disadvantages both existing in daily presentation. On the one hand, not only can it broaden our horizons and spice up our school life, but it can also strengthen our abilities of expression and creation. On the other hand, it does take us loads of time and energy, which may exert a negative impact on normal learning.
Confronted with the face, my suggestions are as follow. To begin with there is no doubt that strengths outweigh backwards, we should reserve it, which plays a positive role in our development. What’s more, it’s suggested that we adjust it to twice a week, with striking a balance between daily presentation and normal learning.
I’d appreciate it if you could take my advice into account,
Li Hua

D. Some Britons send outfits back after taking pictures.
9. What’s Fashion Nova’s special service
A. Renting top designers’ clothes.
B. Offering customers single-use clothes.

13 Why are many people unaware of the harmful effects of energy drinks

A Mother’s Day surprise
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk.Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds.
But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
