【原文】
A Russian man named Ham has always been interested in constructing things out of glass bottles. Not long ago, he built a unique house which was built almost entirely of wine bottles.
His children had always admired his work. They encouraged him to build a house someday.
But he always thought it was impossible. When Ham lost his seconds on, who passed away at the age of 18, he finally decided to build the house in the boy’s memory. So he started the search for suitable materials. To construct the 99-square-metre house, Ham spent about three years collecting over 12, 000 empty bottles. Ham believes that the house is quite strong and expected to stand for at least 100 years! In fact, he has built it in such a way that if some of the bottles break, they can easily be replaced. More interestingly, the house cost five times less than it would cost to build a house with regular materials. But Ham says he wasn’t thinking about the money. He just wanted to build the house in the way his son wanted. Ham gave away his piece of work to his eldest son as a wedding present. His daughter-in-law is quite proud of the house, and says she can’t wait to decorate it.
A
Martín Ramírez from Argentina
I think it is okay for scientists to grow genetically-engineer food because they can develop better food and this can help with the hunger problem all around the world. Scientists can help us to have more and better meats to eat by cloning only the superior animals. I don’t think that we should worry so much about genetically-engineered food.
Angela Fernandez from Mexico
I don’t know whether the tomatoes we find in supermarkets are genetically manipulated or not. What I do know is that they are very bad! A tomato grown with sun and soil is much better. In the case of strawberries, actually, most strawberries we can find are very tasty. I guess, however, they have been genetically manipulated, too.
Vera Sorokina from Russia
If we manipulate vegetable genes, we can also do with human genes. So, it may be possible that a substance which is left in food could get into a human body while the person is eating. Then, is it possible that this substance could modify the person’s genetic structure
Pinar Müfftler from Turkey
I don’t agree with the idea that scientists should not grow genetically-engineered food because it is not safe. If they want to make progress, they should do experiments. It’s important to keep trying. If they don’t keep trying, they will never be able to develop new technologies. Maybe these technologies won’t be successful in the beginning, but if scientists keep trying, they will develop new ways.
21.What do we infer about Martín Ramírez
A.He doubts whether such food is safe.
B.He worries that the crops will spoil.
C. .He is in favour of cloning animals
He doesn’t like vegetables and fruits.
22.As far as Pinar Müfftler is concerned, .
A.developing such food is a better way to solve world hunger
B.experimenting on such food shouldn’t be allowed
C.new technologies will make such food safer to eat
D.this kind of food is much better and tastier
23.Of the people above, who is obviously against genetically-engineered food

Born in Ryazan, Russia, the hometown of Russian poet Sergei Yesenin, Anastasia Podareva seems to be destined for a similar career.
Podareva, 28, has loved poetry since she was a girl, when her father would introduce her to works by great Russian poets such as Alexander Pushkin and, of course, Yesenin. Growing up, she wrote many poems in both Russian and English. After she came to China to study in 2013, the world of Chinese poetry opened up before her.
She soon gave herself a poetic Chinese name, Tang Xilan, with “tang” referring to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), when Chinese poetry entered a golden age, and both “xi” and “lan” are characters taken from The Book of Songs, the earliest collection of Chinese poetry. Her name means an orchid (兰花) that blooms in the morning.
“One thing that strikes me in reading and writing Chinese poetry is the power of the language-it’s melodious (悦耳的) and rhythmic,” says Podareva in My China Surprise, a video series produced by 21st Century.
Over the past decade, Podareva has won awards in multiple poetry writing competitions, published her own Chinese poetry collections, and participated in Chinese Poetry Conference, one of the leading poetry-themed TV programs in China. On top of that, her most unforgettable memory is that one of her poems was turned into a song. And even better: She sang it herself. The poem, titled If, was written in early of 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After witnessing China’s unity as it faced the pandemic, Podareva felt as one with the Chinese people. “I wanted to create something positive to help inspire and encourage people in times of difficulty,” she says. “Some people may praise China in a very straightforward way, but I prefer to express my feelings about the country through different styles of poems.”
24.What can we learn about Podareva before she came to China
A.She fell in love with poetry.
B.She learned from Yesenin in person.
C.She became a famous poet in Russia.
D.She translated Russian poems into English.
25.Why did Podareva name herself “Tang Xilan”
A.It dates from the Song Dynasty. B.It showcases her success in China.
C.It relates to the Chinese poetry. D.It has beautiful rhythm and melodies.
26.What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A.Podareva’s poetry journey in China. B.Podareva’s amazing talent in singing.
C.Podareva’s fight against the pandemic. D.Podareva’s impression of Chinese poetry.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.People have trouble in gaining inspiration.
B.Podareva has deep love for Chinese people.
C.Poetry is the best form of showing emotions.
D.China’s unity was challenged by the pandemic.

Last month, a study was published that examined climate change’s direct effects on the Earth’s seasons. Scientists found a connection between climate change and the temperature and duration of the summer season. Summers in the Northern hemisphere(北半球) could last nearly six months by the year 2100 if global warming continues, according to the study. With the seasons off-balance, there will be harmful effects on human health and agriculture.
Yuping Guan, a physical oceanographer at the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his colleagues combined daily climate data from 1952 to 2011 to get a sense of the start and end of each season in the Northern hemisphere. Over the nearly 60-year period, they discovered that, on average, summers grew from 78 to 95 days, while winters shortened from 76 to 73 days. The spring and autumn seasons also shortened. Guan and his team used the findings from the data to create a model to hypothesize (假设) about how the seasons would possibly change in the future. They found that if left untouched, summers in the Northern hemisphere could last nearly six months, while winters could contract to less than two months.
If the Earth’s seasons continue to shift, it will bring negative effects to human health and agriculture. Longer and hotter summers, for example, can cause mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects to potentially expand their scope and land in places where they’re usually not found. “Because seasons influence the life cycles of plants and animals, climate change could disturb species’ ability to adapt,” said Scott Sheridan, a climate scientist. “If seasons continue to change, everything isn’t going to change perfectly as they should. If we take the example of flowers coming out of the ground, those flowers could come out, but bees aren’t there to pollinate them yet or they’re already past their peak.” With negative effects like these, human health and agriculture will face hardship while moving forward.
This study further demonstrates how cruel climate change is to humans, plants and animals, reminding us how much we are all connected with the environment we share.
28.What did scientists find according to the study
A.Some seasons will disappear in their tracks.
B.Human health remains unharmed by climate change.
C.Global warming will be at its worst in 2100.
D.Climate change affects the days of summers.
29.What does the underlined word "contract" in the second paragraph mean
A.Add. B.Extend. C.Shorten. D.Keep.
30.What can we infer about the effects of longer and hotter summers
A.Mosquitoes can survive in more places.
B.The environment will change as we wish.
C.Human health and agriculture are hardly affected.
D.Some species are more able to adapt to the change.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Is the Earth getting warmer
B.Is climate change bringing hardship
C.Is mankind to blame for longer summers
D.Is summer taking over from all other seasons
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.D

29.词义猜测题。根据画线词所在句“They found that if left untouched, summers in the Northern hemisphere could last nearly six months, while winters could contract to less than two months”可知,while表示前后两者的对比,再结合画线词前的“nearly six months”和画线词后的“less than two months”可知,此处是指冬季缩短,故划线词与C选项“shorten(缩短)”为同义词。故选C。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“ Longer and hotter summers, for example, can cause mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects to potentially expand their scope and land in places where they’re usually not found.(例如,更长更热的夏季会导致蚊子和其他携带疾病的昆虫潜在地扩大活动范围,并降落在通常找不到它们的地方。)”可知,随着夏季时间的延长,蚊子可能会扩大它们的活动范围,在更多的地方存活下来。故选A。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要介绍了一项研究。该研究发现气候变化会影响夏季的温度和持续时间,夏季会越来越长,其也会给人类的各个方面带来不同的影响。D选项“Is summer taking over from all other seasons (夏天正在取代其他季节吗 )”用问句的方式引发读者思考,并紧扣文章主题,为最佳标题。故选D。

There is a famous story about how Walt Disney was inspired to build Disneyland. The story goes that during an afternoon visit to Griffith Park located near the Burbank Studios, Walt took a seat while his two young daughters rode the merry-go-round. Walt thought there should be a place where both children and their parents could enjoy spending some time together in an environment that would be both entertaining and pleasing to the eye, so with this thought came the idea for Disneyland.
Walt’s original plan was to build an eight-acre park located near the Burbank Studios that would be a place for his employees and their families. Those plans were put on hold because of the start of World War II. By 1952, Walt had created a special department to build the park.
Finally in 1953, the first steps in building the park happened when Walt hired the Stanford Research Institute to make a survey to determine the best possible location for the future park. Considering population growth and the future freeway construction, they finally found a location in Anaheim and 160 acres of land were bought for the site of the new park.
The building of the park was very expensive and to create funding for the project Walt developed the idea of the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” television show. It turned out to be a marvelous idea — not only gaining the money to build the park but also presenting the park to the American public.
Construction officially began on July 21, 1954, and it was an ambitious (野心勃勃的) building schedule of less than one year to complete the new park for the projected opening day. Walt watched over the park’s construction and progress continued with just a few minor hold-ups. Finally, the park was ready for the Opening Day on July 17, 1955.
32.What inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland
A.The special design of Griffith Park.
B.The idea to build a park for his daughters.
C.Requests from his family and employees.
D.A trip to a park with his daughters.
33.What is mainly considered in choosing the location of Disneyland
A.Walt Disney’s personal preference.
B.The natural environment.
C.Local traffic.
D.The advice of the public.
34.How was the idea of the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” television show
A.Wonderful. B.Wild.
C.Funny. D.Imaginative.
35.What can we learn about the construction process
A.It was affected by World War II.
B.It was smooth generally.
C.It was completed later than expected.
D.It was influenced by a shortage of money.
【答案】32.D 33.C 34.A 35.B

Melissa was a single parent of three small children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always tight and she had to work hard to make ends meet. But they still felt blessed with a roof over their heads, food on the plate, clothes on their backs, and even if not a lot, always enough. Not knowing they were poor, the kids just thought their mother was strict in money management. Melissa was really glad about that.
Christmas was just around the corner. Although there wasn't budget for a lot of gifts, Melissa planned to please the kids with a family party. She prepared weeks ahead of time, asking one by one what the kids wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, Melissa managed to spare $ 80 dollars for the whole family to enjoy the fun of Christmas shopping.
The big day arrived. Mellissa drove the kids to a nearby Walmart and gave each kid a twenty-dollar bill. “Now, my children,” she announced, “you have two hours to pick a gift in the supermarket. Then we will meet back at the gate.” Excited, the children scattered (四散) and rushed into the supermarket.
Melissa smiled. She looked at her own note and put it back into her pocket. Well, the children's shining faces were the most precious Christmas gift for her, weren't they Sitting in the car, she waiting patiently, imagining what gifts the kids would choose. She couldn't wait to share their joy.
Two hours later, the kids came back one by one. Tom and Tick rushed to their mother, eyes twinkling with excitement. They showed their gifts to Melissa and jumped with joy. The third child, Ginger, was obviously left behind, who dragged her feet to the car. To everyone's surprise, Ginger was empty-handed. Melissa said nothing, asked the kids to get into the car and headed home:
