The Teenage Brain
Parents, teachers, and others who deal closely with teenagers know how difficult the adolescent years can be. This was thought to be due to the “foolishness of youth.” Now, brain-imaging technology allows scientists to study the physical development of the brain in more details than ever before. Their discoveries have led a new theory of why teens act this way.
Recently, scientists have discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of six, they are far from fully developed. Only during adolescence do our brains truly “grow up”. During this time, they go through great changes, like a computer system being upgraded. This “upgrade” was once thought to be finished by about age 12. Now scientists have found that our brains continue to change until age 25. Such changes make us better at balancing impulses with following rules. But a still-developing brain does this clumsily. The result, scientists believe, is the unpredictable behavior seen in teenagers.
The studies show that teens are more likely to take risks. Luckily, the news isn’t all bad. As brain scientist B.J. Casey points out, the teen brain inspires such behavior in order to help teens prepare for adult life.
One way the brain does this is by changing the way teens measure risk and reward (回报).
Researchers have found that when teens think about rewards, their brains release more of the chemicals that create pleasure. Researchers believe this makes the rewards seem more important than the risks, and makes teens feel the excitement of new experience.
Research into the structure of the teen brain have also found that it makes social connection seem especially rewarding. As such, teens have a strong need to meet new people. Because it is still developing, a teen brain can change to deal with new situations. So it connects social rewards with even more pleasure. In this way, the brain encourages teens to have a wide circle of friends, which is believed to make them more successful in life.
Unluckily, this need for greater rewards can sometimes lead teens to make bad decisions. However, it also means that teens are more likely, and less afraid, to try new things or to be independent. And in the long run, the impulses of the teen brain are what help teens leave their parents’ care and live their own life successfully.
24.What can we know about our brains from paragraph 2
A.They’re far from being their full size.
B.They have finishes upgrading by about age 12
C.A teen brain can cause unexpected behaviors.
D.A ten brain is better than an adult brain at following role.
25.What leads teens to meet new people
A.The fear of being alone. B.The need to control others.
C.The desire to leave home sooner. D.The excitement of new experiences.

When you set a foot outside of your door to drop litter, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me may run through your mind”. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.
Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble
Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation Y grew up staring at screens.
We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people.
Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be — it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, Every “hello” leads to a smile — and a smile is worth a lot.
32.What do we learn about the author
A.He likes to be alone. B.He feels stressed out lately.
C.He’s active in attending social events. D.He’s afraid of talking to others at times.
33.What’s the problem of Generation Y in the author’s eyes
A.They rely on the Internet to socialize.
B.They are less confident about themselves.
C.They have difficulty in communicating.
D.They are unwilling to make new friends.
34.Why do many young people avoid meeting new people
A.They think it is troublesome. B.They are busy with their study.
C.They fear to disappoint their old friends. D.They want to take time to do meaningful work .
35.Why does the author write the text
A.To tell about the importance of friends. B.To give tips on how to meet new people.
C.To encourage people to meet new people. D.To introduce the disadvantages of Generation Y.

第二节(满分25分)读后续写
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in high school, I had a dream: to appear in a television program. I was too shy to share my dream with my teacher, however, or anyone else—except my parents. To me, it sounded like a dream that could never come true.
People often told me I could be a nurse, a teacher, or a hairdresser, which I thought were all great careers. But that was not what I wanted. Thankfully, my parents had raised me and my siblings to have lots of confidence. Both my parents, especially my dad, often said, “You can do anything you want to.”
With his encouragement, I applied to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson University in Toronto. I was overjoyed when I was admitted. I really loved the program and worked hard —and I was named the most outstanding graduate of the year. Just by getting into Ryerson and graduating at the top of the class, I began to think that maybe my dream could come true.
After I graduated, I applied to the CBC and CTV for a job. They both said the same thing: “We love your education, but you don’t have any e back when you get some!” And I kept saying, “How can I get this experience I’ve been busy getting an education.” They both turned me down.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself, “I’m new and they’re new. Why not give it a try ” I didn’t know anyone there, so if I was going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I found out who the president was and decided to call him directly. What could I lose I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good! That’s exactly what you should do.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With excitement, I called the president of Global Television.

67.One possible version:
With excitement, I called the president of Global Television. It wasn’t long before Mr. Slaight was on the phone. I had practiced what I was going to say for thousands of times. After a brief introduction, I said, “ heard that your studio is actively seeking for quality individuals for your new show. I want to be an addition to your studio.” To my delight, Mr. Slaight offered me a chance to try out for the show. At the studio, everything went beautifully and they hired me on the spot.
A week later, my big day for the stage came. I was about to get on the stage when negative thoughts flooded into my mind. “What if the audience don’t like me ” Then with my father’s words echoing in my mind, I replaced the negative thoughts with positive ones. “This is going to be the best show ever. You are going to just shine!” I told myself. My positive thinking worked. Soon I restored my confidence. It turned out a good show and was the beginning of my hundreds of television shows. And my success came from picking up the courage to make that phone call.
