Over the last few centuries, there have been many changes in our lives.
To start with, people were not able to travel such a long distance in such a short time in the past. Planes were not very popular at that time because they used to be a very expensive way to travel. Nowadays, we have fast, comfortable vehicles, such as cars and high-speed trains.
Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools that we have today. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.
Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like fridges, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.
Lastly, communications have become much easier than before. In the past, we kept in touch with others by writing letters or sending faxes, but now we have many other ways to choose from, such as making a phone call, sending emails or messages and chatting online. Moreover, we can even see the people whom we care making a phone call with through mobile phones, and we can see each other while chatting online. The most surprising thing is that we can make a phone call with the astronauts and see them when they are in space. What a magical thing!
Thanks to the technology, especially the Internet, our lives have become much easier and happier than before. I’m sure they will become more wonderful in the future. Don’t you think so

C
When night falls, trunks (后备箱) of private cars are turned into mobile stalls (摊位) on the street. They sell everything from drinks to clothes at good prices. Lots of customers would like to buy something each time they pass by. This is the trunk market which has become popular in many cities.
Those who sell things at the stalls are mostly young people. Many young stall holders say they set up the stalls out of interest. They think they might be able to make some money after work. And they find the lively market brings them a feeling of satisfaction. “Every time I work at my stall, I get to talk with nice passers-by. It feels great to meet new friends,” said a stallholder. “I really enjoy hearing people tell me how good my coffee is,” another stallholder said.
But young people can’t expect to make a lot of money from the business because the number would fluctuate. For example, a coffee stall may sell 60 cups of coffee on a good day, but less then 10 cups on another day. And when the weather is bad, the stallholder couldn’t even go out to the market.
While enjoying the fun of buying things at the trunk market, some people also worry about its development. As the food sold there is mostly fast food, no one knows for sure if the food is safe. And each time the market closes, rubbish can be seen everywhere on the street. Besides, people living nearby may find it noisy. Thankfully, some areas are already taking action to make the market go further.

Lynne Edwards collects interesting materials for making quilts. She started making quilts many years ago, and is well known for this work at art centers around the world.
“When I see a piece of material I love, I must have it cut into shapes,” Lynne says.
Making quilts wasn’t the popular hobby as it is today. It started around the 18th century in America, when mothers and daughters at home wanted something to do. They spent days cutting and fitting small shapes together to hang on the wall. In those days, many people couldn’t afford much material. So they made simpler quilts for keeping themselves warm in winter. They cut larger square, rectangle (长方形), and triangle shapes. These shapes, or “patches (补丁)”, of material fitted together well, with very little waste of material.
In America, the “patchwork” had names like Bear’s Foot, Duck Tracks, and The Snowy Mountains. Each quilt told a story about the animals and the countryside where they were made. These old artworks are displayed, now, in museums and art shops where people copy the colors and shapes.
The skills to make quilts by hand were nearly lost in the early 20th century. More people had jobs in cities and the shops sold cheap new machine-made material for homes. People were too busy to cut material and join shape together using their hands. In the late 20th century, people’s interest in old countryside hand skills helped in making homes look interesting. Making handmade quilts soon became the trend (趋势) of that time.
“It’s always better,” says Lynne, “to make your own quilt by hand, or better still, with family. A handmade family quilt is special. Sharing quilt making with family is a social event. This is the one you want to keep forever.”
56. What was the most important reason for making quilts in the 18th century
A. To keep people warm. B. To add interest to homes.
C. To have a special hobby. D. To find something to do.
57. Some people used large squares, rectangles and triangles in order lo ________.
A. use less material B. make the shapes easily C. enjoy the artwork D. keep the shapes the same size
58. What do we know about the quilts in America from the names of the artworks
A. People had a great love for small animals. B. Some quilts showed a picture of a modern city.
C. All the quilts were made in country villages. D. Most quilts were made using the same shapes.
59. Making handmade quilts was a popular activity in the late 20th century because ________.
A. more farmers left their hometown to work in cities
B. machines could join different shapes together easily
C. cheap machine-made material was available everywhere
D. people became interested in old countryside hand skills
60. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Sharing quilt making skills can let us make new friends.
B. A handmade family quilt is always unforgettable.
C. A handmade quilt is warmer than a machine-made one.
D. A quilt can be made easily if the whole family did it.
