【答案】One day, a gentleman told Mr. Rose he often saw Charles go to the river. Feeling frustrated and believing his son must give up studying and be doing something secretly with somebody else, he burst into anger and decided to teach his son a lesson. But after a second thought Mr. Rose decided to calm down and follow his son and figure out what he was doing all these days. When he appeared before the two boys, they felt nervous. But when he saw the two boys were learning how to read, he got into a surprise, followed by Mr. Rose’s remark: “I am sorry son, I narrowly missed a major mistakes.” After a few minutes’ chatting, Mr. Rose made up a decision to help Joe with his reading and writing.
The next day, Mr. Rose took Charles and Joe to buy books in the town. Joe opened his eyes wide when he saw so many beautiful books displayed in the bookstore. After a whole morning’s purchasing, they packed their car with all the books on the list and headed back. The two boys buried themselves in reading and talking about stories from the book. Mr. Rose never felt so relieved for his son finally found a partner to study together. “Maybe in a day they will go to university hand in hand,” he told himself while driving in a high spirit.太和县2023-2024学年高一上学期第一次月考

This week at school was really the best ever. I didn’t even get in trouble when I thought I would because I spilled (洒) milk on my homework and had to hand it in when it was still wet. Growing pains and gains(成长的痛苦和收获)
It’s not easy to grow up. Actually it’s far from easy. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel stuck, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. When we look back on all the challenges in life with a positive attitude, we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!
As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along. not because they wanted me to suffer(受苦)but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They’ve always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.
Every moment of our lives is either living or dying, so live life to its fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and live life like that. The future is ours!
A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps(凸块)on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
28. According to paragraph 1, we learn that when we are young, ______.
A. life is full of joy
B. life is easy for us
C. we know we can stay young forever
D. we sometimes can’t do things we like
29. When the author was young, she was forced by her parents to ______.
A. take music lessons
B. turn gains into pains
C. look back on challenges
D. live a successful life
30. What does the underlined phrase “to its fullest” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Directly. B. Completely .C. Carefully. D. Terribly.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Growing pains are necessary for us to grow up.
B. We all have to experience growing pains.
C. A little hard work and sweat are harmful to us.
D. Life without fear is a better choice for us.
D
“The price of books for our students is just getting higher and higher and, combined with the rising cost of tuition,it’s killing these students,”said Peter Jason,a college professor. “Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America. Almost half of them have at least one part-time job. In fact, one of my students has three jobs. And she still manages to have high scores and go to school full-time. ”
Textbook prices are traditionally high. Adding to that problem, many college teachers change textbooks year after year; they either upgrade to a new edition or switch to an entirely different textbook. This further hurts students because if an instructor no longer uses a particular textbook, that book has no resale value.
Dr. Jason decided to make reading a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking. “Many books have an increased price because of CD-ROMs,lots of color photographs and pictures. I talked to my students, and many of them, like me,prefer to keep things simple! So,a few years ago,I wrote my own pared to most other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one-third the price. That is,$30 instead of $90. When I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages, For only $7. 00,they had almost a new book. Now my loose-leaf textbook enjoys great popularity among the students. Maybe in the future more writers and publishers will try it. ”
32. What did Dr. Jason say about students at college
A. They are short of money. B. They need better textbooks.
C. They should do part-time jobs. D. They are trying to get high scores.
33. What did Dr. Jason decide to do to help the students
A. To choose cheaper textbooks. B. To write a textbook himself.
C. To speak to his students. D. To use old textbooks.
34. How much does a public speaking textbook usually cost
A. About 7 dollars B. About 30 dollars.
C. About 37 dollars. D. About 90 dollars.
35. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage
A. Dr. Jason’s textbook has CD-ROMs and nice pictures.
B. More writers and publishers will write simpler textbooks.
C.Dr. Jason teaches public speaking at a college.
D.Dr. Jason’s textbook is not well received.

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, Mr. Rose, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son when his morning lessons were over, he might relax himself for an hour as he pleased.
There was a river nearby. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to make a living. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son will never learn to read or write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles paid a visit to the hut of this fisherman one day and found the little boy, whose name was Joe, sitting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures. Little Joe said he was trying to write but he knew only two words, which he saw from a sign. Joe wished to learn and write so that he could be the happiest boy in the world. Charles promised to fulfill his dream by teaching him, even though he is still a boy too. Charles also said if Joe tried his best, he would know how to read and write soon. Both Joe and his mother thanked Charles and told him it was what they wished above all things.
