Dear Eric,
I’ m sorry to hear that you are under academic pressure since senior high school. Here are some suggestions for you.
Firstly, I strongly suggest that you should talk about your trouble with your parents, teachers and classmates so as to get help from them. Besides, it is a great idea to join a club you are interested in, which will surely help you make new friends and build your confidence. In addition, working out regularly in your spare time is an effective way to relieve your stress, but also contributes to your sound sleep at night. I hope my suggestions can be helpful and you will get out of your trouble sooner and live happily.
Best wishes!
Yours,

Hello and welcome to English with Lucy. Today we have another topic: “Four Common British Expressions”. Now, before we get started, make sure you connect with me on all my social media which is right here. You can subscribe to my YouTube. You can also like me on Himalaya. And for my Chinese followers, I have my Weibo account as well.
Four Common British Expressions:
“A piece of cake.”
And this is very similar to “easy peasy, lemon squeezy,” which we've discussed in a former video. And basically, it means very easy. So I might come out of an easy exam saying, “That exam was a piece of cake.”
“Break a leg!”
It actually looks really rather cruel, but I promise you it's positive. And “Break a leg!” means “Good luck!”. So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying “Good luck!”, I might say “Break a leg!”
“It cost an arm and a leg.”
And this basically means something was really expensive. If I say, “My bag cost an arm and a leg,” I mean it cost a lot of money.
“To call it a day.”
And this means “to end a task”. So, for example, “I'm feeling a bit tired. I think I'll call it a day.” That means “I think I'll stop here. Let's finish.”
Thank you so much for watching this program of “Four Common British Expressions”. I hope you like it, and I hope you've learned something.

I have my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it. Mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth. ”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed in action. But as a young girl, I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional”. But she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed, I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace – it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
But the present of her desk told me, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a one-paper letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter.
“In any way you choose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words. ”
24.The passage shows that _____________.
Mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter
Mother was too serous about her daughter in words
Mother wrote to her daughter in careful words
Mother wrote to her daughter in careless words
25.The underlined word “gulf” in paragraph 4 means _____________.
deep understanding between the old and the young
different ideas between mother and daughter
free talks between mother and daughter
part of the sea going far in land
26.What did Mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness
She had never received the letter.
For years, she often talked about the letter.
She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.
She read the letter again and again till she died.
27.What’s best title of the passage
A.My letter to Mother. B.Mother and children.
C.My Mother’s Desk. D.Talks between Mother and me.
C
There are few places on Earth that humans haven’t messed up. Now even Antarctica, the only continent with no permanent human inhabitants, is being altered by us. A study found that the increasing human presence in Antarctica is causing more snow-melt bad news for a frozen world already battling the effects of human-caused global warming.
Black carbon, the dark, dusty pollution that comes from burning fossil fuels has settled in locations where tourists and researchers spend a lot of time, scientists found. Even the smallest amount of the dark pollutant can have a significant impact on melting because of its very low reflectiveness: things that are light in color, like snow, reflect the sun’s energy and stay cool; things that are dark, like black carbon, absorb the sun’s energy and warm up.
“The snow albedo (反射率) effect is one of the largest uncertainties in regional and global climate modeling right now,” Alia Khan, a snow and ice scientist at Western Washington University, told CNN. “That’s one of the motivations for the study, to quantify the impact of black carbon on regional snowmelt, which is important for quantifying the role of black carbon in the global loss of snow and ice.”
“Antarctica is sitting there pretty much silently all year. But, if it weren’t there, in the state that it is meant to be, the balance that we have in the climate system will no longer be,” Marilyn Raphael, a geography professor said. “Antarctica’s sea ice is also important to maintain a balance in atmospheric circulation,” he added. As waters get warmer, some Antarctic creatures are finding their homes more and more unlivable.
“Everything we do has consequences,” Raphael said. “We need to educate ourselves about those consequences, especially in systems that we know relatively little about. We have to be careful that we don’t upset the climate balance.”
28.Why can the smallest amount of black carbon have huge impact on melting
A .It is highly reflective. B .Its dark colour absorbs heat.
C .It produces vast energy. D .It causes much pollution.
According to Alia, which of the following is one reason for conducting the study
A .To measure the impact of black carbon on melting.
B .To quantify the cost of battling against climate change.
C .To remove the uncertainties of global warming effects.
D .To urge people to pay more attention to melting problem.
30 .What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A .The change caused by Antarctic melting.
B .The methods to stop Antarctic ice melting.
C .The significance of Antarctic being in its state.
D .The sufferings Antarctic creatures are experiencing.
31.What does Raphael advise people to do
A .Reduce tourist numbers. B .Face the consequences.
C .Acquire professional education. D .Stop disturbing the climate.
D
When I told my parents I was quitting my job, my parents objected strongly. They said something to me, “You won’t have any money, NO!” “Setting up a business is very risky, you shouldn’t do it!” and “Your job is so suitable with rather great pay, why do you want to quit ”
Their comments didn’t wind me up since I had already made up my mind. I told them that I knew what I was doing. At the same time, I understood their concerns, which I had already put into my business plan.
After 9 months or so, my parents stopped discouraging me. After my first or second year, they actually understood that I was doing this for my career. It’s been 10 years, and for the past 8 years, they never asked me to do anything different. In my family, when you don’t get strong discouragement, that means acceptance. Similarly, when I told them about my plan to travel around the world, to try a different diet, among other plans, they would completely oppose at first. But after I pushed forward and moved forward with my aims for a while, they would come to accept them.
At the end of the day, remember that your parents love you. If they don’t care about you, they wouldn’t be against what you do at the risk of influencing your relationship with them. So don’t hate them. Use their objection as a positive force. It will take time for them to change their mind, but when they are aware of your determination (决心) and see you succeeding, and feeling happy and fulfilled doing so, they will realize that you are no longer a little boy / girl who requires their worry and control. That’s when they start to be more hands-off and give you the space to grow and come into your own.
32.What did the author decide to do after giving up his job 10 years ago
A.Go on a diet. B.Start his own business.
C.Travel around the world alone. D.Improve his relationship with his parents.
33.How does the author get his parents’ acceptance when doing something different
A.By sticking to his goals. B.By turning to someone else.
C.By showing more respect for them. D.By having more communication with them.
34.What advice does the author offer in the last paragraph
A.Change jobs from time to time.
B.Live a happy and successful life.
C.Find the space to improve yourselves.
D.Think about parents’ opposing opinions positively.
35.What does the text focus on
A.Whether to give up your job when you don’t like it.
B.What to do when your parents don’t support you.
C.How to communicate with your parents properly.
D.Whether to change your goals now and then.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)

Exam Anxiety
Has this ever happened to you You’ve been studying hard for your midterm, but when you walk into your exam, your mind goes blank, your heart races fast, you get sweaty palms and find it hard to breathe._____ 36 .
Everyone feels anxious during exams. Usually, it results from a fear of failure, lack of adequate preparation time and bad experiences taking tests in the past. This is normal and often helps you work harder, think faster and generally improve your performance. 37 You may also feel that other people are managing the exam better than you. This can cause you to feel that your mind has “gone blank” on information you know you have revised.
38 Some choose to ignore the problem, while others don’t review because they think they will do badly anyway and even miss exams due to the anxiety. It can also be really easy to think that if you don’t try and then you fail, you won’t feel as bad as if you fail after trying really hard.
So what can you do to fight against the negative mindset and stay calm before and during your test ______
39 Yes, this seems obvious, but it’s worth repeating. If you feel confident that you’ve prepared thoroughly, you’ll feel more confident walking into the test. The second tip is simple: just start. The blank page can maximize your anxiety. 40 . You can always go back and change things later if needed, but a few quick answers can get the ball rolling. Besides, allocating (分配) your time is equally important.Look through the whole test before getting started. Mentally allocate how much time you’ll spend on each section. If there’s time to recheck, even better.
A. After you get the paper, dive right in by getting some questions done to build up your confidence.
B. However, if you are overly anxious about the result, you may be unable to focus on your work.
C. Realizing time is almost up and that there’s still a lot of blank space will make you desperate.
D. Therefore, people need an appropriate amount of pressure to help deal with exams.
E. If these classic signs of exam anxiety sound familiar, you’re not alone!
F. People often deal with exam stress in many unhelpful ways.
G. The first thing you should do is to be prepared.
