Afroz Shah, a lawyer in Mumbai, hasn’t had a weekend off in four years. But he hasn’t spent this time preparing for court. His mission is to save the world’s oceans from plastic pollution.
It’s a calling he found in 2015 after moving to a community in Mumbai called Versova Beach. He had played there as a child and was upset to see how much it had changed. The sand was no longer visible because it was covered by a layer of garbage more than five feet thick-most of it was plastic waste. The unsightly(难看的)mess Shah had stumbled upon is part of a global environmental crisis. It’s predicted that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
In October 2015, Shah began picking up trash from the beach every Sunday morning. At first, it was just him and a neighbor, and then he began recruiting others to join in. Word spread and with the help from social media, more volunteers got involved. He’s now spent 209 weekends dedicated to this mission, inspiring more than 200, 000 volunteers to join him in what’s been called the world’s biggest beach clean-up. By October 2018, Versova Beach was finally clean and Shah’s clean-up expanded to another beach, as well as a stretch of the Mithi River and other regions of India. So far, the movement has cleared more than 60 million pounds of garbage-mostly plastic waste-from Mumbai’s beaches and waterways.
While he continues to work as a lawyer during the week, Shah now devotes nearly all of his free time to this cause. He also works with coastal communities to tackle plastic pollution at one of the sources. In areas lacking sufficient waste management systems, Shah and his volunteers educate and assist villagers in reducing, managing, and recycling their plastic waste.
24.What has kept Shah busy at weekends over the four years
A.Handling legal cases. B.Cleaning up the beach.
C.Swimming in the ocean. D.Fishing on the coast.
25.Why was Shah upset after moving to Versova Beach
A.The beach no longer existed. B.The community was in a mess.
C.Many fish in the ocean were killed. D.There was severe plastic pollution.
26.How did Shah carry out his mission
A.By raising money to recycle plastic waste.
B.By encouraging others to join his clean-up.
C.By appealing to people not to throw garbage.
D.By devoting all his time to collecting garbage.
27.Which of the following best explains the underlined word “tackle” in the last paragraph
A.Report. B.Predict. C.Handle D.Cover up.
C
There are few creators whose legacy(遗产)is as far-reaching as Walt Disney. Disney transformed a simple cartoon mouse into a huge empire. Through the years, Disney also had his share of critics. But his view of criticism
(批评)may be different than what you’d imagine.
Way back in 1975, the book The Story of Walt Disney shared one of my favorite quotes from the famous entertainer. “You may not realize it when it happens, but may be the best thing in the world for you.” There is a lot to be learned from that sentence. As you go through life, there will be no shortage of persons telling you what you need to improve. You could simply ignore them or you could do what Disney did: use that negative feedback to make you better.
Negative feedback is like a freshly mined(开采的)diamond. On the surface, you’ve got what would appear to most persons to be a dull, ugly rock. But to a trained eye, that ugly rock is extremely valuable. All it needs is a little cut and polish(抛光).Criticism is like an unpolished diamond: it is ugly. Here you are, trying your best, and someone comes along to tell you it’s not good enough. But much like a processional diamond cutter can take that unpolished rock and turn it into something beautiful, you can learn to get the benefits of criticism.
Think about it: smart as you are, there’s always room for improvement. Additionally, all of us have blind spots. Of course, some criticism will be completely wrong. But even in these cases, it’s valuable because it helps you to see your actions through another perspective(角度), one you may not have considered.
Learning to benefit from such criticism takes emotional intelligence-the ability to make emotions work for you, instead of against you. The key is to change the way you process criticism and learn to turn negative feedback into something constructive. It never feels good to hear that you are wrong. When you do, take a page out of Walt’s book and remember: it is the ones who tell you the truth-even when it hurts-who will make you better.
28.How is the third paragraph mainly developed
A.By offering numbers. B.By analyzing causes.
C.By comparison. D.By describing a process.
29.Why is even wrong criticism meaningful
A.It offers you a fresh perspective. B.It leads you to rethink your blind spots.
C.It prepares you for future similar criticism. D.It helps improve your emotional intelligence.
30.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.Learn to see criticism in a different light. B.Polish your skills of emotional intelligence.
C.Train yourself to ignore negative feedback. D.Face criticism and set another goal.
31.What is the writer’s feeling towards Walt Disney
A.Anger. B.Embarrassment. C.Fear. D.Admiration.
D
Sitting around doing nothing used to seem like one of the safest activities possible. Then a few years ago scientists discovered that sitting all clay causes harmful changes that increase your chances of meeting an early end. Even regular workouts didn’t fix the ill effects of having your bottom in a chair all workday. Suddenly, sitting became public health enemy number one. However, a new research finds that tiny bursts of intense activity are enough to protect your body from the worst effects of your couch-bound lifestyle.
In the research, the scientists closely observed eight young, healthy volunteers as they sat around. On the first day of the experiment they simply lounged for six hours. On the second day they got up every hour and engaged in five rounds of four seconds of intense workouts on a specialized bike.
“Twenty seconds total exercise an hour sounds like nothing, but the data showed it made a big difference to the subjects’ bodies. In short, they didn’t exhibit the usual ill effects of having sat all day. This study is small, but it’s still both hopeful and relevant. The results suggest that breaking up sitting with frequent exercise can undo some of the effects of being inactive,” explains Gretchen Reynolds.
“While the study used a special type of bike developed by sports scientists, the researchers feel similar results are obtainable with home exercise equipment. However, you may have to work for a few more seconds to reach the same level of intensity. You should try to get your heart pumping to its maximum as quickly as possible to ensure the effect. When you find yourself sitting for most of the day, try to rise frequently and move as often during the day as possible and for as many seconds as you can manage,” Reynolds concludes.
32.What does the new research find
A.Regular workouts can extend your life.
B.Sitting all clay can cause permanent harm.
C.Sitting is a worst enemy for people’s health.
D.Intense exercise can relieve the damage of sitting.
33.How did the researchers reach the conclusion
A.By comparing figures. B.By analyzing phenomena.
C.By describing behaviors. D. By referring to documents.
34.What can we know from Reynolds’ words
A.The study still needs further experiments for data.
B.Reaching maximum heart rate should be the aim.
C.Working out at home is much less effective.
D.20 seconds’ exercise is far from enough.
35.What can be the best title of the passage
A.The Worst Health Problem Is Soived B.Intense Activities Are Beneficial to Health
C.Just 4 Seconds’ Exercise Makes a Big Difference D.New Research Redefines a Healthy Lifestyle

Challenges and difficulties are a part of life and words of encouragement can often help you get out of your present situation. It’s easy to tell someone to hang in there and to keep a positive outlook when they are going through tough times but when it happens to you, keeping your chin up(使振作)isn’t always the easiest thing to do. 36 There are a lot of things you can do to help you stand back up and move forward.
Words can have a powerful effect on your mindset. We’ve all heard the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”. 37 Often times, when things seem pointless, when you’ve just come face to face with yet another failure, it can seem as though it’s the end. It can seem as though no matter how hard you try, the life that you want will always be just out of reach. 38 When it comes down to it, how you feel is really just about what you focus on. What words of inspiration and encouragement will do for you is help you put things into perspective.
Who doesn’t go through failures, setbacks, and challenges 39 In fact, after you get through this challenging time, you will have more to come in the future. Although that sounds pessimistic, it’s also reality.
Those who succeed in life and get what they want as well as those who are the most happiest aren’t people who never face difficulties. If anything, they probably deal with more challenges than most people. 40
A.We all do.
B.Even so, it’s not impossible.
C.Words of encouragement are good for your health.
D.But the fact is that words really do have an effect on how we feel.
E.The thing that makes them different is how they respond and react to those obstacles.
F.We often get words of encouragement from our family, friends, teachers and classmates.
G.During these times, some positive words of encouragement can help you shift your focus.

Grandpa’s Old Chair It was the annual cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Just then, John’s mom noticed an old chair that was faded and worn. That chair was for John’s grandpa, who had lived with them since John’s grandma had died.
“John, come and help me.” John’s mom sprang to her feet. “We’ll take the chair to the curb(a边).The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”
As they attempted to move the chair, John’s grandpa made his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried to stop them. “No!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“But it’s so old…” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”
“No,” he persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair ” John asked.
“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” Grandpa’s voice broke, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s sadness seemed to grow as he recalled that fateful day.
“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, "This is not just any old chair. It is more like a friend.”

Dear Professor Smith,
I am Li Hua, from the English club in Hong Xing Middle school. I’m writing to invite you to deliver a speech named “Environmental Protection”, which is scheduled to be given on November 30th, in the school hall.
In your speech, we hope you could introduce the following aspects. To start with, the reasons are cause for concern, including garbage throwing, wasting natural resources, overfishing, among which human activity will be to blame. Meanwhile, the severe consequence should be followed. For example, without better environment, we will have no clear water to drink, no fresh air to breathe. Additionally, it’s better to highlight the solutions for improving environmental pollution, such as setting up natural reserve to save the endangered species, changing the way we work and travel, turning to clean energy. Of course, starting with small things should be emphasized as well. Last but not least, we hope you could share some of your ways to get environment better with us.
I would appreciate it much if you could come. Look forward to your reply at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写:
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, John was woken by the garbage truck pulling up to the house. He run downstairs and saw his grandpa looking outside through the window, tears rolling down his cheeks. The chair stood at the curb on the street, covered in snow. “Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted. John then ran back inside and said, “Mom, you can’t throw out grandpa’s chair. It has been with him for decades and is like a loyal friend that has witnessed the most important moments in his life!”
Paragraph 2:
Hearing this, John’s mom looked at his grandpa and slowly walked towards him. She handed grandpa a tissue and said, “I’m sorry... I just didn’t realize how much it meant to you. John and I will bring your chair back.” They took the chair back inside. They placed it next to the fireplace so it could dry. John’s mom stepped back, as if seeing the chair for the very first time. “Mm... I guess it does give the room a certain touch of character,” she mused. John and his grandpa wholeheartedly agreed that the living room would be rather dull without this old chair.
