When I was a little girl, my parents read bed time stories to my sister and me every night. It is one of my favourite childhood memories.
My sister and I had many books. As I grew older, I enjoyed staying in my father’s “library” and would read for hours each day. To make me play with friends outside like other kids, my parents would have to take books away from me.
I see reading as an important part of my everyday life, not just a hobby on which I can spend my free time. Reading opens up a whole new world to me, which includes lots of new ideas and rich knowledge.
Through reading, I’ve become a better learner.
Although I enjoy communicating with people, I’m an introverted person and really need my own time. Last year, I had several experiences that made me begin to feel worried about my shyness, and I felt that it would make me lose many chances. Around that time, I read Susan Cain’s book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. This book helped me understand myself better. And I’m not afraid to be myself now.
Charlie Jones says, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I’ve met great people and travelled around the world—all from my chair or bed with a book in my hands.

I started cycling faster and faster and with every block, I got just a little bit closer to him. After a few minutes I was only about 100 meters behind him, so I really picked up the pace and tried my best.
Finally, I caught up with him and passed him. I felt so good. I “beat him”, but he didn’t even know we were racing.
After I passed him, I found that I had missed(错过) my turn, had gone six blocks past it and had to turn around and go all the way back.
Isn’t that what happens in life when we race with others, trying to outdo(胜过) them or trying to show that we are more successful We spend our time and energy running after them and we miss out on our own paths.
The problem with unhealthy competition(竞赛) is that it’s a never-ending cycle. There will always be somebody ahead of you in one way or another. What you should do is just run your own race and wish others well.
