It was built 2,000 years ago beside the sea and people used to watch plays there in the open air. There used to be an old fishing village nearby. After that, we had a guided tour. Rather than go to the old palace, which is full of tourists, our guide took us up a hill and showed us around what’s left of a library. Most of it had fallen down, but it still had a fantastic atmosphere. We then took a bus into the countryside for lunch, and we ate next to a waterfall. Afterwards, we took a walk from there to a lake. In the afternoon, we chose to go on one of two different factory tours. One factory made pots and plates, which sounded dull to me, and one produced carpets. That was the one we went on. There were lots of traditional designs, all made by local people. It was Amazing. That was the last thing we did that day.

Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. First period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period — biology. Our teacher's name is peau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.” She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps (沼泽).”
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr.V.,my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook. I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.
24. What did the author mainly write about in this passage
A. Her new teachers. B. Her plan for the new year.
C. Her first day of senior high. D. Her schedule for Wednesday.
25. What should students do when peau says "alligator"
A. Sit still. B. Stop talking.
C. Listen to the teacher. D. Look at the blackboard.
26. How did the author find her first two classes
A. Unattractive. B. Informative. C. Very tiring. D. Pretty easy.
27. Why did the author feel scared during the third period
A. Because she couldn't focus on her work.
B. Because she found the class demanding.
C. Because she didn't like the teacher.
D. Because she did poorly at school.

English is full of funny expressions that don’t always make sense. Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may not understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it. Here are some English idioms based on animals.
When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”. To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time.
Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown reason, Americans use “dog” in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as sick as a dog”, you’re really, really sick.
Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to keep that secret, but you have just ‘let the cat out of the bag’!” You probably guessed it—that idiom means to reveal a secret or tell facts that were previously unknown.
Dogs and cats don’t always get along, but they appear side by side in a commonly used idiom. When it rains heavily, people might say it’s “raining cats and dogs”.
Heavy rain often ruins people’s plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely day, you can have a picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. That experience perfectly explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering them to “stop bugging me”.
Idioms are very common in both spoken and written English. If you want to have a better understanding of English, you have to learn idioms.
28. According to Paragraph 1, idioms are _______.
A. expressions which are based on animals
B. expressions with rich cultural background
C. expressions that always make sense
D. expressions which are easy to understand
29. “Monkeying around” can be used to describe children _______.
A. jumping around and wasting time
B. doing something useful and serious
C. playing with monkeys with their parents
D. spending time playing with their family pets
30. What can be learned from the text
A. Dogs and cats always get along nicely.
B. Bugs can be used to show your annoyance.
C. Americans believe cats can give away secrets.
D. Americans use the idiom “as sick as a dog” to describe a healthy man.
31. How does the text mainly develop
A. By sharing experiences. B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing figures.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. B 31. C

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop ‘monkeying around’.(当孩子们跳来跳去做傻事时,他们的父母可能会告诉他们不要胡闹)”可知,monkeying around用 来说那些跳来跳去做蠢事傻事的孩子。故选A项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. Years ago, I could not stick to exercising until I bought a CD called I Enjoy Exercise. I listened to it every day. I bought the CD because I wanted to run in a race and hopefully win!
I had assured my 10-year-old son Todd that I would run in a race with him. Unfortunately, however, when that race came, his left leg was hurt in a car accident. Without him running with me, although I took part in that race, I didn’t do quite well in it.
While Todd couldn’t run together with me because of his injury (受伤), he never forgot the promise I made for him. He was always asking me whether I would keep my promise when he recovered in the future. So I decided I was going to train and go all out to win the next race. What I needed was motivation (动力). It happened that one of my friends mentioned the CD which he liked very much, saying that he got a lot from the music in it when feeling down. So I bought it and listened to it while exercising every day.
What happened to my thinking was amazing as I listened to it daily. I started to think about the repeated words on the CD — “I enjoy exercise”. Instead of dreading exercise, I was thinking, “I enjoy exercise.”
I found out how important words are that we play in our minds every day. I went from a person who seldom exercised to someone who started to exercise daily. Just think how our lives will improve if we reflect on the uplifting words of the famous works. I have found the positive messages have greatly inspired me and then changed my life.
How did I do in that race, you might be thinking I actually became the champion in my age group.
32. Why did the author take part in the race by herself
A. She would like to win the race.
B. She had a good talent for running.
C. Her son got injured in a car accident.
D. Her son was unwilling to run with her.
33. How did the author get the motivation for training
A. By recalling some inspiring stories.
B. By listening to the CD while running.
C. By getting timely help from her friend.
D. By forcing herself into keeping running.
34. What does the underlined word “dreading” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Fearing. B. Improving.
C. Preferring. D. Taking.
35. What message does the author intend to deliver to us
A. It’s important to avoid injury while running.
B. The uplifting words make a difference to us.
C. Parents should get along well with children.
D. We can build up our bodies by regular exercise.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. B

Instead of dreading exercise, I was thinking, “I enjoy exercise.”(我开始想起CD上重复的那句话——“我喜欢运动”。我不是害怕运动,而是在想:“我喜欢运动。”)”可知,作者通过在运行时听CD获得了运动的动力。故选B。

“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well matched e on!”
After Jessica left,Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance,” she thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight ” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said, “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable, “This is just my competitor. Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She went over and then opened the box to find Linda’s tape was just inside. At that time, she was in a dilemma, “This is my chance to defeat her.” But on a second thought, she changed her mind, “If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something.” She placed it on the chair carefully, leaving a note saying “Take it easy, we are the best.” Soon, it’s her turn to come on the stage.
Paragraph 2:

She kept reminding herself, “I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it.” But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. To her surprise and relief she saw the tape and Mary’s note. She was in a dilemma, wondering what to do next. “Do I really want to win so much ”She hesitated for a second and then hurried out to give the music tape to Linda ,who was extremely anxious in the corridor. Linda was so grateful to Mary, and finished her dancing successfully.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. Nervous as she was, she stepped onto the stage with a big smile. She danced skillfully to the music and completed her most difficult spin smoothly. “Good,” she thought to herself, “my injured arm is awesome today.” As the music ended, thunderous applause filled the stadium. With the final marks announced, Mary knew she achieved her goal and tears began to well up in her eyes. (Possible ending 1)As she headed back to the dressing room, Linda came up to her cheerfully and held her hand tightly, “Congratulations! You’ve done an amazing performance!
Our teacher's name is peau and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point.
C

A She would like to win the race.
B. She had a good talent for running.
C. Her son got injured in a car accident.
D. Her son was unwilling to run with her.
33. How did the author get the motivation for training
A By recalling some inspiring stories.
B The uplifting words make a difference to us.
C. Parents should get along well with children.
D. We can build up our bodies by regular exercise.
