When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs.Tan.”
And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me cheek already two week lone.”
And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”
Then she talked more loudly. “What he want I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.
When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently.
To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.
28. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because ________.

C. they believed disease could be spread in public baths.

D. By following the order of importance.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To stress the role of dirt.
B. To introduce the history of dirt.
C. To call attention to the danger of dirt.
D. To present the change of views on dirt.

The term “multitasking” originally referred to a computer’s ability to carry out several tasks at one time. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to success. In fact, some excellent mental aerobic exercises (大脑训练) involve engaging the brain in two or more challenging activities at a time. Although checking e-mail while talking on a phone and reading the newspaper may be second nature for some people, many times multitasking can make us less productive, rather than more. And studies show that too much multitasking can lead to increased stress, anxiety and memory loss.
In order to multitask, the brain uses an area known as the prefrontal cortex Brian scans of volunteers performing multiple tasks together show that as they shift from task to task, this front part of the brain actually takes a moment of rest between tasks. You may have experienced a prefrontal cortex “moment of rest” yourself if you’ve ever dialed (拨电话) a phone number and suddenly forgotten who you dialed when the line is answered. What probably occurred is that between the dialing and the answering, your mind shifted to anther thought or task, and then took that “moment” to come back. Research has also shown that for many volunteers, job efficiency (效率) declines while multitasking, as compared to when they perform only one task at a time.
Multitasking is easiest when at least one of the tasks is habitual, or requires little thought. Most people don’t find it difficult to eat and read the newspaper at the same time. However, when two or more attention-requiring tasks are attempted at one time, people sometimes make mistakes.
We often don’t remember things as well when we’re trying to manage several details at the same time. Without mental focus, we may not pay enough attention to new information coming in, so it never makes it into our memory stores. That is one of the main reasons we forget people’s names — even sometimes right after they have introduced themselves. Multitasking can also affect our relationships. If someone checks their e-mail while on the phone with a friend, they may come off as absent-minded or disinterested. It can also cause that person to miss or overlook key information being passed on to them.
32. Why are some mental aerobic exercises designed to engage people in multitasking
A. To make them more productive. B. To reduce their stress and anxiety.
C. To develop their communication skills. D. To help them perform daily tasks more easily.
33. According to Paragraph 2, why may a person suddenly forget who has called
A. He may leave his prefrontal cortex temporarily damaged.
B. He is probably interrupted by another task.
C. He is probably not very familiar with the person he has called.
D. He may need a rest between dialing and speaking.
34. People tend to make mistake when _______.
A. they perform several challenging tasks at a time.
B. new messages are processed one after another.
C. their relationships with others are affected.
D. the tasks require little thought.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Multitasking has become a way of life.
B. Multitasking often leads to efficiency decline.
C. Multitasking exercises need to be improved.
D. Multitasking enables people to remember things better.
Being sophisticated (见多识广的,老练的) can get you respect from the adults and other teenagers at your school. 36 Being sophisticated means paying attention to how you dress, how you act and how you treat others. It might take a bit of effort, but you’ll end up being a confident, cultured person.
37 Conversations are often filled with interruptions, and many people listen only when they can put in their own piece. If you want to stand out as a more sophisticated talker, spend more time listening in a conversation than you do in speaking. Listening properly means listening actively. Ask questions where needed and show that you’re listening to what someone is saying.
Put other people’s needs ahead of your own. 38 Rather than put yourself first in every situation, consider how you should tread others. A perfect example of this is allowing the elderly to take your seat on a crowded bus or subway.
Dress for the occasion. Your clothes should meet the expectations of a specific event. For example, if you are attending a wedding, you’ll want to have your finest suit on. In most situations, like a night out with friends, smart casual clothes are enough. You don’t need to wear a suit or a fancy dress to every occasion. 39
Maintain a good posture (姿势).Having a good posture is helpful to your overall image. 40 To maintain a good posture, imagine that ice water is poured down your check, forcing you to straighten as you react to the cold.
A. Listen more than you speak.
B. Listen with patience and never interrupt.
C. It will help in lots of social situations throughout high school.
D. It makes you look more intelligent and trustworthy.
E. However, you should make sure your clothes fit well and are clean.
F. As a matter of fact, you will not be judged by the clothes you wear.
G Part of being sophisticated is being kind and looking out for others.

My name’s Don Ball. I’m fifteen and I go to Blueway Comprehensive School. Mike is the same age and goes to the local grammar school, but we’ve been friends since junior school. We both live in the village of Saltley, which is in the Midlands. We’ve been bird watching together since we were 11.1 suppose we’re quite good at it now, because we do it regularly, read about it, use the Netto find out about birds, and we’re members of a club for birdwatchers, too.
We have a secret place, named RP, to watch birds. RP is the name we gave to a set of three small lakes surrounded by woods. They are called Redman’s Pools on large maps, but lots of people don’t know they are there because they are hidden by trees.
One day, Mike told me that he saw osprey (鱼鹰) there, which surprised me. There weren’t any in Britain because they’d been hunted too much. They were protected by the RSPB, because lots of people wanted the eggs for their collections.
By now the ospreys had finished building their nest at the top of one of the pine trees on the island in the middle of Big Pool. Of course, we still went to watch them every weekend, and a couple of nights after school, now that the days were getting longer.
One Saturday we were surprised to find a white car parked on the roadside near the track, and as we wheeled our bikes down the track to Redman’s Pools we saw a middle-aged man walking along the side of the pools with a large blue plastic bag over his shoulder.
He stopped at the point where the bank was closest to the island and started doing something with the bag. I was horrified by what I saw. The man had taken a small inflatable (可充气的) plastic boat out of his blue bag, and he was blowing it up.

My name is Li Hua, a high school student in our city. Knowing that the sports meeting will be held in our city, I can’t wait to write to you to apply to be a volunteer.
As a sports lover, I have a general idea of the rules of different events. In addition, I am also good at communicating with others and eager to lend a hand to people in need. With the spirit of voluntary work rooted in my heart, I am sure that I can be a qualified volunteer you need. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua
67. He was going to row over to the ospreys’ island! After fully inflating the boat, he placed it in the water, got in, and started to row himself across the water to the island. The male osprey flew off its branch, and circled around. The female on the nest looked worried but didn’t move, watching as the small boat got closer. The man moved his boat around to the island. Then he pulled the boat out of the water and made his ways towards the tree. When he got to the tree, he looked up and climbed up!
Seeing him climbing up the tree, I knew it was the time to call the police. Hearing what I said, one policeman promised to come as soon as he could. I took a series of photographs of the man holding the bag with the eggs in it. When I was thinking what to do next, I heard a loud voice was speaking clearly. “You are under arrest for stealing the eggs of a protected bird.” It was the policeman speaking through a police megaphone. “Sit down with your hands on your head and wait.” Later, the man was taken to the police station. Mike and I cycled back home, feeling proud that we had managed to save the eggs.

(17) We’ve been lucky not to have any rain lately, but that could change tonight. Temperatures are expected to drop to 12 degrees. Unfortunately, those temperatures are going to stay around there for the rest of the week And it doesn’t look good for the weekend, either. There is a storm coming for the mainland area, (18) so get out your umbrellas, folks. This will be accompanied by some high winds, coming down from the valley. Strangely, valley residents won’t feel the worst of it. As that wind blows between the mountains, it will pick up speed. Then it will hit the wind coming in from the sea and create some dangerous conditions by the sea. (19) As always if there is anyone who needs assistance, we have a 24-hour line you can call here. Stay tuned for our traffic report and more hit music here on FM99.3. (20)

37. A 段首主题句,根据本段中的…spend more time listening in a conversation than you do in speaking.
Put other people’s needs ahead of your own.
D项(它使你看起来更睿智和值得信赖)中It指代上文中的Having a good posture,符合语境。
