John and Mary had a nice home and two lovely children. John had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city for several days and Mary would go with him too. They hired a reliable woman to care for their children and returned home a little earlier than they had planned.
As they drove into their hometown, they found a home on fire. After having a look, Mary said, “Oh well, it isn’t our fire. Let’s go home.” But John drove closer and said, “That home belongs to Fred Jones who wouldn’t be off work yet. Maybe there is something we could do.”
John noticed an old lady screamed to him, “The children! Get the children!” John grabbed her by the shoulder saying, “Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!”“In the basement,” cried the lady.
In spite of Mary’s disagreement, John soaked (浸湿) his clothes and ran to the basement which was full of smoke. He found the door and grabbed two children. As he left he could hear some more cries. He sent the two badly frightened children into the waiting room and asked how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, “John! Don’t go back! It’s dangerous! That house will fall down in any second!”
But he shook her off and went back. It seemed a very long time before he found both children and started back. As he climbed up the endless steps the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies next to him, and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children. The baby-sitter had left them at this home while she did some shopping.

Praising your child may do more harm than good Psychologists say “empty” praise makes them unhappy.
Praising children with phrases such as “well done, darling” may hurt their confidence, a leading psychologist Stephen Grosz has warned. He says that praise such as “you’re so clever” or “you’re such an artist” could also hinder their future performance at school. He says that such empty praise causes children to be unhappy as they may say they can’t live up to (不辜负) the false expectations.
Instead, he advises parents and teachers to give praise less often and use phrases that congratulate children for “trying really hard”. Mr. Grosz says, “Empty praise is as bad as thoughtless criticism (批评)—it expresses indifference (冷漠, 不关心) to the child’s feelings and thoughts.” He also mentions the research showing that children who are heavily praised are likely to perform worse at school. Some psychologists from Columbia University asked 128 pupils aged 10 and 11 to solve a number of maths problems. Afterwards, some were told, “You did really well—you’re so clever.” But the researchers told the other group, “You did really well—you must have tried really hard.” Both groups of children were then given more difficult questions and those who had been told they were clever did not do as well as the others.
He says that when picking up his daughter from a kindergarten near their home in North London, he heard a teacher tell her, “You have drawn the most beautiful tree. Well done.” Later, after she had done another drawing, the same teacher said, “Wow, you are really an artist.” In his book, Mr. Grosz writes, “My heart sank. How could I tell the teacher that I would prefer it if she did not praise my daughter ”
As a parent of two grown-up children, I am strongly for Grosz. I praise them when praising is proven right. I want them to know if I praise them, they must have done something beyond my expectation, and beyond what they are capable of doing.
8. What does the underlined word “hinder” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Hold back. B. Lead to. C. Get through. D. Come up with.
9. What is the bad effect of empty praise according to Mr. Grosz
A. It may lead children to failure in the future.
B. It is equal to criticism without giving consideration.
C. It may cause children to work harder without plans.
D. It will make children fall behind since they are proud.
10. Why does Mr. Grosz give an example in paragraph 4
A. To show his pride in his daughter.
B. To show his daughter’s drawing ability.
C. To express his disagreement with the teacher.
D To show his satisfaction with his daughter’s teacher.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards Stephen Grosz’s opinion
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
A 9. B 10. C 11. C
根据第二段第一句话“Praising children with phrases such as ‘well done, darling’ may hurt their confidence(用“做得好,亲爱的”这样的话来表扬孩子可能会伤害他们的信心)”可知,家长用空洞的话来表扬孩子可能会伤害他们的自信心,结合划线单词所在句子“He says that praise such as “you’re so clever” or “you’re such an artist” could also hinder their future performance at school.(他表示,“你真聪明”或“你真是个艺术家”之类的赞美,也可能……他们未来在学校的表现。) ”和下文“He says that such empty praise causes children to be unhappy as they may say they can’t live up to (不辜负) the false expectations.(他说,这种空洞的表扬会导致孩子不快乐,因为他们可能会说他们无法达到错误的期望。)” 所以划线单词“hinder”意为“阻碍”,和A项“hold back(抑制)”意思相近,故选A。
根据第四段“He says that when picking up his daughter from a kindergarten near their home in North London, he heard a teacher tell her, “You have drawn the most beautiful tree. Well done.” Later, after she had done another drawing, the same teacher said, “Wow, you are really an artist.” In his book, Mr. Grosz writes, “My heart sank. How could I tell the teacher that I would prefer it if she did not praise my daughter ”( 他说当他去伦敦北部家附近的幼儿园接女儿时,他听到一个老师对她说,你画了一棵最美的树。“干得好”后来,她又画了一幅画,同一个老师说“哇,你真是个艺术家”。在他的书中,格罗斯先生写道“我的心一沉。我怎么能告诉老师,我宁愿她不赞美我的女儿呢?”)”可知,Mr. Grosz不希望女儿得到老师这样空洞的表扬,由此可知,Mr. Grosz举这个例子是表达他不认同老师这样的赞美,故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的内容,尤其是“I am strongly for Grosz.(我强烈支持Grosz。)”
D
Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists claim. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.
Several car manufacturers are already integrating 5G into their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of sel-driving vehicles.
Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50million people injured worldwide every year, will drop drastically (彻底地) as a result.
Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what's around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably.”
A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford revealed its intention to fit 80 percent of its 2020 vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.
12. What is the benefit of 5G mentioned in the text
A. It can improve the safety of automated vehicles.
B. It can help drivers communicate with each other.
C. It can effectively wipe out road traffic accidents.
D. It can help make more profits for the manufacturers.
13. What can we know about the vehicle-generated warning system
A. It can get information several miles ahead.
B. It will frequently send messages to drivers.
C. It has been proved extremely helpful for driving.
D. It is under research and development at present.
14. What will be probably continued with the text
A. Some safety rules when using 5G.
B Some car manufacturers.
C. The sales information of cars with 5G.
D. The advantages when using 5G.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. 5G on the Way to Making “Dialogue” Between Cars
B. 5G Leaves Drivers Free When They Are Driving
C. 5G Has Been Popular with Drivers Around the World
D. 5G Is to Bring Great Convenience to Our Daily Life
A 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第三段的第一句“Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today(格拉斯哥喀里多尼亚大学(GCU)的专家们认为,高速连接还将提高自动驾驶汽车的可靠性和能力,达到比目前手动驾驶的汽车更安全的程度)”可知,高速互联网还将提高自动化车辆的可靠性和性能,使其比目前使用的手动驾驶汽车更安全。故选A。
根据第四段的“a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years.(在未来几年内,汽车自动预警系统将成为可能)”可知,未来几年内,可以向司机发出警报的车辆生成预警系统将会出现。
根据最后一段的“A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford revealed its intention to fit 80 percent of its 2020 vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams(一些制造商已经在研发联网汽车。
5G on the Way to Making “Dialogue” Between Cars(5G正在成为汽车之间的“对话”),故选A。

One possible version:
Dear John,
I’m writing to share my views about eating fast food for lunch in our school.
Recently, I find that some students always eat fast food for lunch. I don’t think it’s a wise choice. Though fast food is convenient and delicious in taste, it can’t provide us with enough nutrition. To keep healthy and get enough energy from lunch, we’d better take some home cooking for lunch or buy some fresh food from the school canteen. I don’t mean fast food should be refused in our life. But just choose it when we are really in a hurry, or it will surely have some side effects on our health.
I hope my advice can be taken.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

One day, when I was a first-year student in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday He must really be a nerd (书呆子).”
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw tears in his eyes. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “They are bad guys! They really should be punished.” He looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. At first, he didn’t fit in. He, however, volunteered to play football with us, and gradually made many friends. Since then, we had often played together. All of my friends thought he was great. Besides, he was hard-working and willing to help others, which changed my view of students in private schools. He studied very hard and became the top student of our class. When I had difficulty in study, he always offered to help me.
We always hung out on weekends, and the more I got to know Kris, the more I liked him. One day, we hung out as usual. Feeling tired, we sat in a bar to rest and have a drink. Suddenly he stared at me and said, “In fact, I have been considering telling you something. Do you still remember the day you met me ” “Yes, of course.” I answered. “Actually, it was the most miserable time of my life, for I lost my beloved parents. It was your kindness that saved me. You made me know that life is meaningful with friends around,” he continued. Hearing this, I felt touched, bursting into tears. “I also thought it was my fortune to meet you and be friends with you, and you helped me a lot, too. I believe our friendship would last forever.”

D. To show his satisfaction with his daughter’s teacher.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards Stephen Grosz’s opinion
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
D It can help make more profits for the manufacturers.
