七、阅读理解。
Shopping bags have caused serious environmental problems around the world. About 500 billion plastic shopping bags are used each year all over the world. Hundreds of millions of these bags end up being thrown away. Studies have shown that only about 1 to 3 percent of plastic shopping bags are recycled.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, plastic bags caused floods(洪水) in most parts of Bangladesh. Scientists found that many people were throwing away their plastic bags as litter. The drainage (排水) systems throughout the country were filled with them, which caused the floods.
Animals have also experienced something painful. In Western Europe, scientists found that many whales have died from taking in plastic bags. The whales may mistake(把……错当成) the bags for food and take them in. This harms their stomachs and even kills them. Birds that flew along beaches have also died after eating plastic bags.
Last but not least, plastic bags may change the ecosystem(生态系统) of the world’s oceans. Scientists have learned that ocean living things will often swim after plastic waste in the water. This makes them travel farther and more quickly than they could. After arriving at a new place, they will then eat the local living things. This is bad for their health. So they are in great risk.
To deal with these problems, many countries have tried to do something. In Ireland, for example, the government passed a new law. They collect a tax(税) of 15 cents for shoppers who use a plastic shopping bag. In Japan, some stores cut down the price a little for shoppers who bring their own reusable bag for carrying home their things.
