Learning new languages does not only makes our views wider, but
makes us smarter as well. Children have a natural ability to learn a new
language to be able to communicate. But as we age, it becomes more and
more difficult for our brain to accept a new language. As children we
learn to think, to communicate, and naturally pick up the rules of
(
electrophysiology
)grammar of our mother tongue (母 语 ) . Nobody teaches us our native
language, it is just everyday connection to it that helps us learn it.
A Swedish MRI study showed that learning a foreign language has clear effects on the brain. It was found that the areas of the brain connected to language learning grew. Kara Morgan-Short, a professor at the University
4
of Illinois in Chicago, used electrophysiology to explain the inner workings of the brain. In the experiment, she taught an artificial language to a group of people. The first group learnt the artificial second language through explanations of the rules of the language and the second group learnt by way of being immersed in the language, much like how we learnt our mother tongue as a child. While both the groups learnt, she found out that it was the immersed study group whose brain processes were similar to the ones of native speakers. Morgan-Short said, “This brain-based research tells us that some adults can learn through immersion, like children.” If you wish to learn a foreign language, it’s never too late.
Learning new languages has its own benefits. It can keep your brain healthy and active. No matter when you start learning, they will make you get into a different world. As they say, “Learning a new language is not only about learning different words for the same thing, but learning another way to think about the same things.”
27. The writer may agree that .
A. learning a foreign language keeps your body active
B. adults can learn a foreign language as well as children
C. it’s too late to learn a new language when you grow up
D. learning a new language makes you get into the same world
28.The words “being immersed in the language” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “ ”. A. Learn a new language by using electrophysiology
B. Learn a new language by teaching an artificial language
C. Learn much the way children do when they learn a native language
D. Learn a new language through explanations of the rules of the language
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. How Can We Learn a Foreign Language Well
B. How Learning a New Language Influence Us
C. How Can Children Learn Better Than Adults
D. How Much You Know about Learning Languages

Each year, billions of pounds of plastic rubbish enter the ocean.
Some of the rubbish ends up on our beaches, washed in with the
waves. Some rubbish is eaten by sea animals that mistake it for food,
which is very dangerous. As a result, how to deal with the plastic
rubbish in ocean becomes a hot topic in the world. China plays an
important role in it. A lot of Chinese people try to solve it creatively.
Robot fish that “eat” tiny plastics may one day help to clean up
the world’s polluted oceans, says a team of Chinese scientists from
Sichuan University in southwest China.
Their invention may just be 1.3 cm in size and soft to touch. These robots have already tried to “eat up” tiny plastics in shallow water from polluted water. This is a new idea that they hope could finally help clean our polluted oceans. The fish-shaped robots, which are controlled by light and can treat themselves well if broken, are able to swim up to 2.76 body lengths per second - faster than most artificial soft robots.
Presently they are only able to do so in shallow water, but the team’s purpose is to enable them to collect tiny
5
plastics at deeper levels.
“We developed such a lightweight mini robot, so that it can be used in many ways, for example in dangerous medical treatments,” explained Wang Yuyan, one of the researchers who developed the robot. “A robot so small can even be localized to a part of your body to help you do away with diseases,” she added.
If the robot is accidentally eaten by other fish, it can be digested(消化) without harm ,according to Wang. “We would like to go deeper into the water,” she adds. “The team has been working on this and more work is needed.”
Now, the environment is becoming better with the help of different creative inventions from the scientists. However, if we really hope to live a good life, we need to start from ourselves to protect our environment.
30. A lightweight mini robot might be used when .
A. a fisher tries to fish in the ocean
B. a ship has an accident in the ocean
C. a cleaner collects the plastic bottles at the beach
D. a doctor moves the cancer away from the body
31. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A. How the robot fish works.
B. Why the robot fish is faster.
C. Where the robot works.
D. How long the robot fish is.
32. What can we learn from the passage
A. The robot fish has helped to clean up the world’s polluted oceans.
B. The robot fish is able to swim up to 2.76 body lengths per minute.
C. The robot fish may work at deeper levels in the ocean in the future.
D. The robot fish is harmful to other fish when it is eaten by the fish.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To introduce what Sichuan University invented.
B. To encourage people to save the environment.
C. To discuss what Chinese do to the environment.
D. To explain why people need creative inventions.

Thomas Alva Edison
Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman
who invented many things that greatly influenced life around the world.
He lit up the world with his invention of electric light. Without him, the
world might have been a dark place.
However, the electric light was not his only invention. Edison
invented more than 1200 things in our life. About every two weeks, he
created something new. Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan on
February 11, 1847. His family moved to Port Huron Michigan when he
was 7 years old. Surprisingly, he attended school for two months. His mother, a former teacher, taught him a few things, but Thomas was mostly self-educated.
6
When he was 12 years old, he got his first job. He became a newsboy on a train that ran between Port Huron and Detroit. He set up a lab in a baggage car of the train so that he could experiment in his spare time. Unfortunately, his first work experience did not end well. Thomas was fired when he accidentally set fire to the floor of the baggage car.
Thomas then worked for 5 years as a telegraph operator but he continued to spend much of his time on the job conducting experiments. He got his first patent(专利) in 1868 for a voice recorder run by electricity. However, it was not a success. In 1870 he sold another invention, a stock ticker for $ 40,000. He was then able to build his first shop in New York, New Jersey.
Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, but thought of his deafness as a good thing in many ways. It kept conversations short, so that he could have more time for work. He called himself a “two-shift man” because he worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes he worked so attentively that his wife had to remind him to sleep and eat.
Thomas Edison died at the age of 84 on October 18, 1931, at his estate in West Orange, New Jersey. He left numerous inventions that improved the quality of life all over the world.
34. How many things did Edison invent
35. Where was Edison born
36. When did Edison get his first job
37. Why did Edison think his deafness was a good thing
38. What do you think of Thomas Alva Edison

are cheaper than paper books. I think the most important reason is that e-books are
