For children, space is magical — a whole world is out there, with so many things to learn and stories to read. Here are some children’s books about space and the solar system.
Mae among the Stars by Stasia Burrington
This beautifully illustrated picture book is attractive to young kids. It was inspired by the first African American woman in space, Mae Jemison. It tells the story of Mae as a little girl, who always knew she had big dreams about space. This is a great addition to a young kid’s collection, as a reminder to hold tight to dreams and never give up.
Space by Libby Jackson
This beautifully illustrated book gives kids a look at 50 women from around the world who were involved in exploring space in some way, from the 19th century to the present day. This is a perfect gift for young kids who want to know more about some of the lesser-known scientific achievements related to space exploration.
Chasing Space by Leland Melvin
This is Melvin’s story about being a football player-turned-astronaut, along with his recovery from an injury that nearly left him deaf. Kids will love reading his story about how he faced challenges and advanced ahead, and he also includes DIY experiments for kids to try, and a section of full-color photographs.
System and Beyond by David A.Aguilar
The book is full of beautiful illustrations of space, and is perfect for kids of all ages, exploring various planets and the solar system. Unlike other kids’ space book, this is a National Geographic book written and illustrated by an award-winning astronomer and space artist. Aguilar is also the former Director of Science Information and Public Outreach at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Daniel Brush, an astonishing worker in gold, jewels and steel died on November 2022, aged 75. Students from a jewellery school once came to Brush’s studio, a loft in mid-Manhattan, awed to be meeting a figure who, to them, was a worker of miracles.
For 45 years in that loft, he had pursued his calling. His wife Olivia was the only company. He produced hundreds of objects of all sorts, most of them exquisite and many astonishingly small. Rather than use electricity, he laboured alone in a forest of antique machines and when tools frustrated him he made his own, displaying them in cupboards as art in themselves.
Above all else, he worked in gold. His obsession took fire when at 13 he saw an Etruscan gold bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The ancient technique of applying gold beads as fine as sand-grains to a curved gold surface without solder (焊接), was stunning, but so was the lightness of spirit.
He resolved then that he would make such a bowl, and gold became the study of his life. Simply to watch it melt, turn to red-hot and white-hot, then glow purple, was magical. To hold pure gold grain and let it move slowly through his fingers restored his calm of spirit. His chief motivation, he said, was to understand the material and, through that, himself. He wondered why his heart had beaten so fast in the museum that day. Gold in particular had a message for him. His contact with this glorious metal might focus all his attention and help him to hear it.
He developed delicate craftsmanship, with each object virtually a museum piece. For Daniel Brush, he loved the idea that one might take a piece made by Brush out of a pocket, let its beauty pass from mind to mind, and smile. That too was what its maker was after.
24.What can we learn about Daniel Brush
A.Students visited him regularly.
B.He began to live in his loft in 1975.
C.He tended to use ancient crafts to produce objects.
D.Most objects he produced were of a surprisingly small size.
25.What is the main reason for his lifelong study of gold
A.He wanted to learn more about both gold and himself.
B.He wondered why his heart had beat fast in the museum.
C.His calm was restored when gold grain moved through fingers.
D.Gold had a particular message for him and he was eager to hear it.
26.Which of the following can best describe Daniel Brush
A.Stubborn. B.Wealthy. C.Dedicated. D.Lonely.
27.What does the author try to emphasize in the last paragraph
A.Brush’s valuable works. B.The admirers Brush expected.
C.Brush’s desire for fame. D.The artistic ideal Brush pursued.

Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is essential for a person's wellbeing. Researchers have found that insufficient sleep and tiredness increase a person's risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity (being very overweight), high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Now, a new study has found that getting sufficient sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.
Jeffrey Gross, the university science professor who led the research, was not trying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class. Instead, the professor hoped the wrist-worm devices, which track a person's physical activity, would show a connection between exercise and academic achievement.
While Gross's data showed no relationship between these two factors, the study found something surprising. As the researchers were analyzing their data, they noticed that there was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and their results in the course's 11 quizzes, three midterm tests, and the final exam.
Even more interesting, it was not sufficient for students to just head to bed early the night before a test. Instead, it's the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.
The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student. "When you go to bed matters," Gross says, "If you go to bed at 10, or 12, or 1 at night, and sleep for seven hours, your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn't everything."
Perhaps the most interesting was the huge impact that small differences in sleep patterns had on the students' grades. The overall course grades for students averaging six and a half hours of sleep each night were 25% lower than students who averaged just one hour more sleep. Similarly, students who varied their bedtime by even one hour each night had grades that dropped 45% below those with more regular bedtimes.
Who knew getting A's just required some extra ZZZ's
28.Based on his original objectives, which best describes Professor Gross's research findings
A.Accidental. B.Complete. C.Convincing. D.Doubtful.
29.Who were the people taking part in the study
A.Middle school chemistry students. B.Volunteers from different universities.
C.Professor Gross's own students. D.University student athletes.
30.How did Professor Gross's team measure academic performance
A.Making the students wear a special watch.
B.Using students' university entrance test results.
C.Giving the students regular after class quizzes.
D.Using the students' normal test and quiz grades.
31.Based on the study's findings, who is likely to perform best academically.
A.A person who has a good night's sleep the night before an important test.
B.A person whose normal bedtime varies between 9 p.m. and 12 p.m.
C.A person who sleeps from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day.
D.A person who sleeps for a total of 7 hours each night.

Have you ever wished you could be better organised or more sociable Perhaps you’re a constant worrier, and you’d prefer to be a little more carefree
Many surveys show that at least two-thirds of people would like to change some elements of their personality. In the past, such desires appeared to be unachievable. Like the proverbial leopard that could never change its spots, our virtues and flaws were believed to be woven into the fabric of our minds.
Recent scientific research, however, proves this expectation of personality’s permanence wrong. With the right psychological strategies and enough effort, many people can successfully shape their core personalities into what they desire.
Our genes almost certainly play a role: it’s why people’s personalities often reflect their biological parents’ ones. The influence of our social environment was thought to end in early adulthood, as the brain reached maturity. If this were true, it wouldn’t be possible to shift personality at will. Yet that is exactly what psychology professor Nathan Hudson and his colleagues have shown with a series of groundbreaking studies.
The interventions in their studies typically involve arranging regular activities that reflect the personalities people wish to adopt. A quiet person who wished to be more outgoing, for example, might have the goal of introducing themselves to a stranger once a week, or making small talk with the cashier at their local supermarket.
The aim is for the thinking patterns and behaviours they generate to become habitual. In the first trial, provided participants actually completed those arranged tasks, their personalities shifted in the desired direction. Similarly exciting results could be seen in a later trial. The differences of participants’ personalities before and after the intervention were still apparent three months after the experiment had ended. As Aristotle argued more than 2,300 years ago, we become what we repeatedly do.
The unexpected plasticity of our minds should be good news for anyone who wishes they were a bit more sociable, organised, or happy-go-lucky. Another potential benefit is that awareness of this research could help improve mental health.
32.Why is “leopard” mentioned in paragraph 2
A.To explain that our minds consist of virtues and flaws.
B.To show the similarity between leopards and human beings.
C.To prove a possibility that people can change their personality.
D.To demonstrate the previous belief that personalities remain fixed.
33.What can be inferred about the “interventions”
A.The two trials reached different conclusions.
B.Activities are tailored to specific personalitites.
C.The purpose is to better people’s personalities.
D.People’s personalities can be changed but can’t last.
34.What has Nathan Hudson’s team shown through their studies
A.The previous expectation of personality’s permanence was confirmed.
B.The influence of our social environment ends when the brain matures.
C.The desire to change some elements of our personality can be achieved.
D.Our genes play a greater role in our personality than social environment.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.We Are What We Do
B.Habits Make Things Easier
C.Your Personality Is Not Set In Stone
D.A Leopard Never Changes Its Spots
During job or school interviews, you’re likely to be asked what your strengths and weaknesses are, because the interviewers are interested in how your areas of strengths and weaknesses might affect your performance in this position. 36 For instance, you may be skilled in cooking, but if you’re applying for an office job, this strength may be irrelevant.
However, knowing your personal areas of strengths and weaknesses is not a piece of cake. It takes self-awareness and self-reflection. 37 Or, ask some of your friends what they see as your best qualities or shortcomings.
38 For example, let’s say my strength is creativity and yours is planning; we both want to have the same career. We might go about getting there in very different ways. If I did something creative to get my dream job and you planned carefully, we’d both likely be successful. But if I tried planning and you tried something creative, both of us might fail. 39
Having a weakness doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It could be something you struggle with, but it could also be something you haven’t spent time developing yet. 40 For example, maybe your area of weakness is relevant to gratitude. You just haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about gratitude before. But now you engage in a bunch of activities that help you turn gratitude into an area of strength. Hey, now you’ve got one more skill!
A.Is it proper to begin with a truthful answer
B.So ask yourself what you are good or weak at.
C.Our areas of strengths can help us achieve our goals.
D.Thus, it’s helpful to know your strengths related to the role.
E.Many job applicants are unsure how to approach this question.
F.By turning a weakness into a strength, you build other important skills.
G.That’s why it is important to know and use our strengths to reach goals.

Birdsong
“Nothing will ever be the same again,” Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father’s favorite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk. It was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral(葬礼) last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad’s work for them. His tears had warmed Ally’s cheeks, and her own tears were still frozen inside her heart.
Ally looked at her father’s picture on the bookcase. Dad was sitting in the middle of a stream, wet through but grinning proudly. “I miss you, Dad,” she said softly. By this time last year she had already taken dozens of pictures. Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods behind the house each weekend for a glimpse of the special wood warbler(林中莺).
Ally reached for the first photo album she and Dad put together. On the cover a tiny orange bird with blue-grey wings and sharp black eyes peered out of the photo her father had clipped from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on his face when he first showed her the pretty bird, “Ally, I bet if we search real hard, we’ll see this little guy together some day.”
They’d never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. Staying with Dad, Ally felt comfortable. “If only I could get that good feeling back,” she thought sighing.
Staring at the bird, she suddenly knew exactly what she had to do. Grabbling the little flag, she placed her camera around her neck and hurried outside. Ally stuck the flag among the flowers in the garden. “Please let me see the Warbler,” she murmured to herself. She gave her worried Mom a kiss and then set off into the woods.

W: Anything else No, I don’t think I have.
M: Something you used in the bank
W: Oh, my goodness. My credit card is gone as well.
M: Yes, you left your credit card on the counter.
W: Now I’m in a supermarket. I’ll come to pick them up after I take the shopping home.
M: That will be fine. Remember to bring some photo identification with you.
W: OK. See you at the moment. Thanks.
M: See you later.

W: World Sleep Day, organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine since 2008, is held on March 21 every year. The aim is to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep.
Researchers say that if we always get enough sleep, we can be smarter and thinner. Also we’re to have better skin, better memories and longer lives. When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason, it will influence your performance the next day.
In general, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, but a recent survey found that, on workdays, only 21% of them really get a full eight hours of sleep. For teenagers, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night. However, about 80% of high school students don’t get enough sleep because of schoolwork or bad habits.
27% of people worldwide have sleep problems. Now there are over 80 kinds of sleep disorders, and most people know little about their danger. It’s necessary to realize the importance of sleep and try to have a good sleep.

(2023·浙江·高三天台中学联考)Daniel Brush, an astonishing worker in gold, jewels and steel died on November 2022, aged 75.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.C 27.D
文章第三段讲到“The ancient technique of applying gold beads as fine as sand-grains to a curved gold surface without solder (焊接), was stunning, but so was the lightness of spirit.(在没有焊料的弯曲金表面上涂上细如沙粒的金珠的古老技术令人惊叹,但精神的轻盈也是如此。)”
文章第四段讲到“His chief motivation, he said, was to understand the material and, through that, himself. He wondered why his heart had beaten so fast in the museum that day. Gold in particular had a message for him. His contact with this glorious metal might focus all his attention and help him to hear it.(他说,他的主要动机是了解材料,并通过这些了解自己。他想知道为什么那天他的心脏在博物馆里跳动得如此之快。黄金特别向他传达了一个信息。他与这种光荣金属的接触可能会集中他的所有注意力,帮助他听到它。)”可知他终生研究黄金的主要原因是他想了解更多关于黄金和自己的知识,故选A。
26.推理判断题。文章第二段讲到“For 45 years in that loft, he had pursued his calling (在那间阁楼里45年来,他一直在追寻自己的使命)”以及整篇文章描述他对黄金的研究和投入,可知Daniel Brush非常投入和专注,故选C。
文章最后一段讲到“For Daniel Brush, he loved the idea that one might take a piece made by Brush out of a pocket, let its beauty pass from mind to mind, and smile. That too was what its maker was after. (对于Daniel Brush来说,他喜欢这样的想法:人们可以从口袋里拿出一件Brush制作的作品,让它的美从脑海中传递到脑海中,然后微笑。这也是它的制造者所追求的。)”可知作者在最后一段中强调的是Brush追求的艺术理想,故选D。

(2023·安徽安庆一中模拟)Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is essential for a person's wellbeing.
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.D 31.C
, was not trying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class.”和“Instead, the professor hoped the wrist-worm devices, which track a person's physical activity, would show a connection between exercise and academic achievement.” 故选A项。
, was not trying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class.”
根据第三段中“As the researchers were analyzing their data, they noticed that there was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and their results in the course's 11 quizzes, three midterm tests, and the final exam.”
根据第五段中“If you go to bed at 10, or 12, or 1 at night, and sleep for seven hours, your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours.” 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

根据第二段“Many surveys show that at least two-thirds of people would like to change some elements of their personality. In the past, such desires appeared to be unachievable. Like the proverbial leopard that could never change its spots, our virtues and flaws were believed to be woven into the fabric of our minds.(许多调查显示,至少三分之二的人想要改变他们性格中的某些元素。在过去,这样的愿望似乎是无法实现的。就像谚语所说的“江山易改本性难移”一样,我们的优点和缺点被认为是编织在我们的思想结构中)”可推知,在第二段提到了“豹”是为了证明先前的观点,即人格是固定的。故选D。
33.推理判断题。根据第五段“The interventions in their studies typically involve arranging regular activities that reflect the personalities people wish to adopt. A quiet person who wished to be more outgoing, for example, might have the goal of introducing themselves to a stranger once a week, or making small talk with the cashier at their local supermarket.(在他们的研究中,干预通常包括安排反映人们希望采用的个性的定期活动。例如,一个安静的人希望变得更外向,他的目标可能是每周向陌生人介绍自己一次,或者在当地超市与收银员闲聊一次)”可推知,活动是为特定的个性量身定制的。故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“In the first trial, provided participants actually completed those arranged tasks, their personalities shifted in the desired direction. Similarly exciting results could be seen in a later trial. The differences of participants’ personalities before and after the intervention were still apparent three months after the experiment had ended. As Aristotle argued more than 2,300 years ago, we become what we repeatedly do.(在第一次试验中,如果参与者确实完成了这些安排好的任务,他们的性格就会朝着预期的方向转变。在随后的试验中也可以看到同样令人兴奋的结果。实验结束三个月后,参与者在干预前后的性格差异仍然很明显。正如亚里士多德在2300多年前所说的那样,我们反复做什么,我们就会成为什么)”可知,内森·哈德森的团队通过他们的研究表明了改变我们个性的某些元素的愿望是可以实现的。故选C。
35.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Recent scientific research, however, proves this expectation of personality’s permanence wrong. With the right psychological strategies and enough effort, many people can successfully shape their core personalities into what they desire.(然而,最近的科学研究证明,这种对人格持久性的期望是错误的。通过正确的心理策略和足够的努力,许多人可以成功地将他们的核心个性塑造成他们想要的样子)”可知,文章主要介绍了最近的科学研究证明,这种对人格持久性的期望是错误的。通过正确的心理策略和足够的努力,许多人可以成功地将他们的核心个性塑造成他们想要的样子,C选项“你的性格不是一成不变的”最符合文章标题。故选C。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
(2023·江西师大附中三模)During job or school interviews, you’re likely to be asked what your strengths and weaknesses are, because the interviewers are interested in how your areas of strengths and weaknesses might affect your performance in this position.
36.根据空后的“For instance, you may be skilled in cooking, but if you’re applying for an office job, this strength may be irrelevant.(例如,你可能擅长烹饪,但如果你申请的是办公室工作,这一优势可能就无关紧要了)”可知,此处举例说明空处的内容,所以此空处讲述的内容应与“优势与职位是否相关”有关,D选项“Thus, it’s helpful to know your strengths related to the role.(因此,它有助于了解自己的优势与作用)”中的thus为关键词,结合句意可知,D选项与空前内容为因果关系,且内容吻合。故选D项。
37.根据空前的“However, knowing your personal areas of strengths and weaknesses is not a piece of cake. It takes self-awareness and self-reflection.(然而,了解自己的优势和劣势并不是一件容易的事。这需要自我意识和自我反省)”可知,认识到自己的优势不是一件容易得事情,根据空后“Or, ask some of your friends what they see as your best qualities or shortcomings.(或者,问问你的一些朋友,他们认为你的优点和缺点是什么)”内容中的or可以推断,此空处讲述的内容与“如何了解自己的优势”相关,B选项“So ask yourself what you are good or weak at.(所以问问你自己你擅长什么或者哪方面弱)”内容与空前内容为因果关系,且与空后的or为选择关系,符合逻辑。故选B项。
38.分析语篇可知,此空为本段的主题句,根据空后列举的例子“For example, let’s say my strength is creativity and yours is planning; we both want to have the same career. We might go about getting there in very different ways. If I did something creative to get my dream job and you planned carefully, we’d both likely be successful. But if I tried planning and you tried something creative, both of us might fail.
39.分析语篇可知,此空位于段位,可能是对本段的总结,根据空前的“If I did something creative to get my dream job and you planned carefully, we’d both likely be successful. But if I tried planning and you tried something creative, both of us might fail.(如果我做了一些有创意的事情来得到我梦寐以求的工作,而你精心策划,我们都有可能成功。但如果我试着做策划,而你试着做一些有创意的事情,我们俩都可能失败)”可知,只有知道自己的优势并且利用合理能促进我们成功,但是利用不当便会失败,G选项“That’s why it is important to know and use our strengths to reach goals.(这就是为什么了解并利用我们的优势来实现目标是很重要的)”中的that指代的内容与空前的内容吻合,且构成因果关系。故选G项。
40.根据空后列举的例子“For example, maybe your area of weakness is relevant to gratitude. You just haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about gratitude before. But now you engage in a bunch of activities that help you turn gratitude into an area of strength.(例如,也许你的劣势与感恩有关。

注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1
Familiar smells of the earth rose up to greet her.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2
Determined to start out again the next morning, she was about to head home when a ringing birdsong floated down to her.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Familiar smells of the earth rose up to greet her. Some things never change, Ally thought. Quickening her pace, she hurried to the rock by the stream where she and her father used to sit and eat lunch. She sat on it, with her face toward the sun. Overhead the sky was filled with birds busily diving to gather dried grass to place in their nests. Their sweet songs echoed throughout the woods. Ally felt content for the first time in a long while. She could almost hear her father’s laughter in the gentle breeze as she listened for the sweet song of the special bird. All too soon, the sun disappeared behind thick gray clouds.
Paragraph 2:
Determined to start out again the next morning, she was about to head home when a ringing birdsong floated down to her. It was prettier than any she had heard before. An excited feeling bubbled up inside Ally as she searched the sky. A flash of orange dashed down and rested on a nearby branch. For a moment Ally couldn’t believe her eyes, but it was true. The tiny wood warbler just sat there, looking around, as if it were waiting for something. Ally blinked back tears. “Thanks, Dad,” she whispered slowly lifting her camera and taking careful aim. “Things will be different without you. I’ll always miss our time together, but I feel better now.”

②.回家:go back home/return home
