Camping tips: Which overnight wilderness experience is right for you
If you’re an experienced backpacker, read no further. This article is for camping rookies, those who have never slept beneath the stars or haven’t pitched a tent since their youth but are seriously thinking about overnighting in the wilderness.
Car camping
At its most basic, car camping involves packing a tent, sleeping bag, fold-up chair, cooler and camp stove into your vehicle and staying at a drive-up campground. Nearly every national park, and many state and county parks and private facilities, offer drive-up campgrounds with restrooms, potable water, fire rings or pits, and maybe even hot showers. So there are lots of choices.
The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed with other campers. Not a lot of privacy, they can be noisy, and possibly hinder your quest of communing with nature.
Backpacking
No vehicle required; just your feet and a good pair of hiking boots or shoes to get you to the next overnight spot. A multi-day hiking trip is without doubt the most immersive way to experience the great outdoors.
Different from maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. All you really need are a backpack, sleeping bag, water bottle, small first-aid kit, enough food to last the entire travel. It can be done just about anywhere on the planet.
Boat Camping
While this does involve owning or renting a watercraft or using a ferry or water taxi service to reach the overnight site, camping via canoe, kayak, raft or boat offers a similar get-away-from-it-all adventure as backpacking.
Experienced paddlers and boaters usually prefer to camp on their own along a secluded shoreline. But many adventure or wilderness outfitters offer guided trips that can last anywhere from a couple of days to two or three weeks. With a boat, you can sometimes camp places that not even backpackers can reach.
1. Who are the intended readers
A. Red-blooded males B. White-collar staff
C. Blue-blooded tourists D. Green-hand campers
2. What can you learn from the passage
A. Backpacking allows you to communicate with nature deeply.
B. Car camping is the most economic way to experience nature.
C. The drive-up campgrounds provide people with private environment.
D. Boat camping offers the same adventures as backpacking.
3. In which column will you find this passage
A. Feature B. Style C. Travel D. Entertainment

When I first heard about Summit Learning, I admitted I was not a bit happy and excited at all. I thought it would require interactions with others. But later, I was astonished when I got to experience it firsthand.
Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a peer (同龄人) review. I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I preferred to work independently. But when I got involved, I found in the experience, I had done something that I thought was nearly impossible — it made my poetry better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more detail.
One of our final products of the project was to present our poetry to the class. I’ve always loved public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning, I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The peer activities we did with a partner gave me more belief in my ability and inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.
Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive and hard-working culture that allows us to push our boundaries and keep going. It creates a sense of community since we are all working towards a similar goal.
As an active boy, I have always been ahead and advanced, but in a normal classroom, there are restrictions on what I can do. With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my work and pursue my goals.
Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself going back to a normal classroom.
4. What was the author’s initial response to Summit Learning
A He was unwilling to attend it. B. He was excited to take part in it.
C. He was astonished to hear about it. D. He was unhappy to withdraw from it.
5. How did the poetry project benefit the author
A. It boosted his confidence. B. It developed his sense of humor.
C. It reminded him to be independent. D. It taught him how to organize activities.
6. What can be inferred about Summit Learning
A. It proves the limits of one’s abilities. B. It teaches poetry in a normal classroom.
C. It transforms the traditional way of learning. D. It promotes diversity of classroom objectives.
7. How does the author find Summit Learning now
A. Demanding. B. Admirable. C. Upsetting. D. Conventional.

There is a wide gap between China and developed economies such as the US and South Korea in terms of the chip industry. However, the nation has taken big steps in charting its own course, which is evident in its chip industry’s growth. And China can meet 85 percent of its domestic demand if the chip industry fully applies the 14-nanometer transistor (晶体管) technology. In fact, this could become a reality in three to four years. Still, China lags behind in the processing and manufacturing of chips, as well as chip design and packaging.
Yet there is a silver lining for China, because the US’ technology blockade (封锁) helps remove the domestic objections to the development of the chip industry. The story of China’s LCD industry could be repeated in the chip industry this time: China has made joint efforts in the past ten years and now secures more than 60 percent of the LCD market.
Nevertheless, there should not be a mad rush across the country to develop chips. The government should offer encouragements to state-owned as well as privately owned enterprises to produce high-quality chips. The measure of freeing integrated circuit-making enterprises of paying corporate income tax for two years is a good move in this direction.
Also, China has about 1,700 semiconductor enterprises. They should be encouraged to pool their resources and technologies and strengthen their business operations so they can achieve breakthroughs in core technologies.
Besides, China should build a friendlier environment to attract talents from across the world to its chip industry. It’s indeed alarming that China faces a shortage of 300, 000 professionals in the chip industry. As Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei, said, “We had adopted a money-pumping approach in the past to develop the electronic industry. However, it takes more than money to develop chips. We should try our best to win over mathematicians and physicists.”
8. What’s the author’s attitude towards China’s chip industry
A. Subjective. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
9. What does the underlined phrase “a silver lining” in paragraph 2 probably refer to
A. A great success. B. A strong desire. C. A positive side. D. A slim chance.
10. What do we know about China’s LCD industry from the text
A. It is a highly profitable industry. B. It developed rapidly ten years ago.
C. It is less important than the chip industry. D. It went through difficulties previously.
11. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To list some disadvantages of China’s chip industry.
B. To analyze the US’ influence on China’s chip industry.
C. To show the rapid development of China’s chip industry.
D. To provide advice on the development of Chin’s chip industry.
B 9. C 10. D 11. D

根据第一段“There is a wide gap between China and developed economies such as the US and South Korea in terms of the chip industry. However, the nation has taken big steps in charting its own course, which is evident in its chip industry’s growth. And China can meet 85 percent of its domestic demand if the chip industry fully applies the 14-nanometer transistor (晶体管) technology. In fact, this could become a reality in three to four years. Still, China lags behind in the processing and manufacturing of chips, as well as chip design and packaging.(在芯片产业方面,中国与美国、韩国等发达经济体之间存在很大差距。
根据第二段“Yet there is a silver lining for China, because the US’ technology blockade (封锁) helps remove the domestic objections to the development of the chip industry. The story of China’s LCD industry could be repeated in the chip industry this time: China has made joint efforts in the past ten years and now secures more than 60 percent of the LCD market.(然而,对中国来说也有a silver lining,因为美国的技术封锁有助于消除国内对芯片产业发展的反对意见。这一次,中国LCD产业的故事可能会在芯片行业重演:中国在过去的十年里共同努力,现在占据了60%以上的LCD市场。)”可知,中国LCD产业正是因为美国的技术封锁才取得了现在骄人的成就,由此推知,划线短语“a silver lining”是指美国的封锁也具有“积极的一面”,与“A positive side”同义。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“The story of China’s LCD industry could be repeated in the chip industry this time: China has made joint efforts in the past ten years and now secures more than 60 percent of the LCD market.(这一次,中国LCD产业的故事可能会在芯片行业重演:中国在过去的十年里共同努力,现在占据了60%以上的LCD市场。)”
通读全文,结合第三段“Nevertheless, there should not be a mad rush across the country to develop chips. The government should offer encouragements to state-owned as well as privately owned enterprises to produce high-quality chips. The measure of freeing integrated circuit-making enterprises of paying corporate income tax for two years is a good move in this direction.(然而,不应该在全国范围内疯狂地开发芯片。政府应该鼓励国有企业和民营企业生产高质量的芯片。集成电路制造企业免征企业所得税两年的措施就是朝这个方向迈出的一大步。)”、第四段中“Also, China has about 1,700 semiconductor enterprises. They should be encouraged to pool their resources and technologies and strengthen their business operations so they can achieve breakthroughs in core technologies.(此外,中国有大约1700家半导体企业。鼓励中小企业集中资源和技术,加强经营,实现核心技术突破。)”和第五段中“Besides, China should build a friendlier environment to attract talents from across the world to its chip industry. (此外,中国应该建立一个更友好的环境,以吸引来自世界各地的人才到中国的芯片产业。)”可推知,在客观介绍中国芯片行业面临的问题和机遇后,作者也为中国芯片产业的发展提供了建议,这是作者写作篇文章的目的。故选D项。
D
A group of researchers studying the behavior of Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, have found that they have different “personality” types that help them survive and raise their baby tigers.
According to the previous investigation, Amur tigers are definitely the largest cuts in the world. They live in vast forests in wildness areas of eastern Russia and in protected areas of northern China. There are about 400 of these tigers left in the wild, although there are probably hundreds more living in zoos or reserves.
The researchers based the study on a human test called “The Big Five”, which scores people on five personality features. They asked feeders working with 248 cats in two shelters to spy on the tigers and give an account of their personalities. The results divided the tigers into two groups, which the researchers described as having either “majesty” or “steadiness”. Tigers in the majesty category were those that appeared “dignified (高贵的) and ambitious”. The tigers in the steadiness category were “sincere and tolerant”.
Majestic tigers had a higher social status, spent more time hunting live animals, and mated and ate more. The steady tigers seemed gentler and loving toward one another. Rosalind Arden, co-author of the study, said, “It’s pleasant to see that you don’t have to be dominant, fierce, competitive, and aggressive in order to succeed as a tiger, which doesn’t correspond with people’s traditional insights into tigers.”
There were female and male tigers in both categories. In fact, female Amur tigers are rare and feel exhausted after giving birth to baby tigers so that fathers often help raise the baby tigers. Having a steady personality, especially for male ones, could play a significant role in the relatively long amount of time — two to three years — that baby tigers stay with their parents. The researchers say both personalities have advantages that help the tigers survive threats, including loss of habitat and hunting. The team hopes the study will encourage more support from all walks of life in a bid to guarantee the tigers’ conservation.
12. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2
A. To justify an argument.
B. To add background information.
C. To summarize the previous paragraph.
D. To introduce a new topic for discussion.
13. The researchers conducted the study on Amur tigers by
A. categorizing them for inspection
B. scoring them on 5 personality features
C. doing comparison experiments in the lab
D. observing them through a personality test
14. What does Rosalind Arden think of their findings
A. They improve Amur tigers’ welfare.
B. They change the tigers’ living conditions.
C. They help the reproduction of Amur tigers.
D. They contradict traditional ideas about tigers.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Few sex-related differences exist in tigers’ personalities.
B. A steady personality decreases tigers’ chance of survival.
C. Greater conservation efforts have been made due to the study.
D. Personality types of baby tigers are influenced by their parents.
B 13. D 14. D 15. A

故填have spread/have been spreading。
故填to。

故填being given。

It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技) and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31 years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for her. “But what are you going to do ” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside calling echoed increasingly stronger.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters.

Finally came the written and physical fitness test day.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters. No sooner had she stepped into the training venue than she found all her classmates were 18-22 young kids. “Could I really make it ” Peterson thought to herself, struggling. At the very moment, she was once again thought of the firm and courageous eyes of the firefighters who came to rescue her over 50 years ago. She instantly rolled up her sleeves and began to learn both theoretical and practical knowledge as her much younger peers.
Finally came the written and physical fitness test day. For Peterson, she was at an advantageous situation for the theoretical part, as her past rescue experiences on ambulance ride-along made her a qualified rescuer already. However, the 3-km running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc. all behaved as huge gaps awaiting her to conquer. Though she ranked the last among such items, her persistence, endurance as well as the passion for a childhood dream made her name appear on the list of newly-announced firefighters. This time, tears blurred her eyes, as the dream born in the fire was eventually fulfilled.

A. He was unwilling to attend it.

Also China has about 1,700 semiconductor enterprises.

A Few sex-related differences exist in tigers’ personalities.
B. A steady personality decreases tigers’ chance of survival.
C. Greater conservation efforts have been made due to the study.
D. Personality types of baby tigers are influenced by their parents.

“You’ll be a good mommy” the firemen told her.
