I'm a Russian. In my native country, people believe that those who always keep big smiles on their faces, if they don't have a real reason to do so, are not genuine(真诚的). For the last five years, I've lived in Kansas. What brought me to this country was my American husband, John. I work in a department store, where my coworkers show big smiles to me and pronounce my Russian name so sweetly. Every time I hear it, I feel as though my mom is embracing(拥抱)me.
Last year John encouraged me to go to see my mom back in Russia, and my manager even gave me a month off for the trip. When you live an ocean apart from your family, you need at least a month to visit them. I bought a plane ticket and packed my suitcase. Then came Covid-19. My mood became grey as I realized I couldn’t go to see my mom.
A couple of weeks later, my sweet coworker Miss Donna asked me, “So what's happening with your trip to Russia ” I told her I had to cancel(取消) it and I wouldn’t be able to see my mom this year.
Miss Dona didn’t say anything at first. Then she put on a big smile and said, “Well, you can come to my home and see my mom!” “Oh my Lord!” I was at a loss for words. Imagine a mom for loan(借出)! I honestly don’t know whether I would offer the same to someone in need of a mother’s warmth, but my new people surely would do it for me.
I know that because of the virus, you shouldn’t hug friends, but you can still embrace someone’s heart. That’s how my heart felt at that moment: hugged. So, yes, believe me, big smiles with no reason can be genuine.
24. What can we know from the first paragraph
A. The author believes big smiles are false.
B. The author works together with her husband.
C. The author seldom wears big smiles in Russia.
D. The author gets along well with her coworkers.
25. Why did the author cancel her trip
A.Because Covid-19 broke out unexpectedly.
B. Because the manager didn't allow her to leave.
C. Because her mother's home was too far away.
D. Because she was invited to Miss Donna's home.
26. How did the author feel when invited to Miss Donna's home
A. She was happy. B. She was touched.
C. She was confused. D. She was uncertain.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. A Canceled Trip B. Imagine a Mother for Loan
C. The Outbreak of Covid-19 D. Big Smiles Embrace My Heart

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there's a recession in the economy(经济), those who attended college will be more possible to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you get close to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
28. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2
A. It offers you a chance to study abroad.

D. It encourages you to travel around the world.

Japanese researchers have created smart kitchen utensils(用具) that use electricity to make food saltier and tastier without adding any extra salt.
Salt makes food taste so much better, but it also can be harmful—eating more than enough salt can cause serious health problems like high blood pressure and heart disease. The average Japanese person eats about 10 grams of salt a day, double the daily sodium (钠) intake recommended by the World Health Organization.
But what if we could make food taste salty without using any salt That's what scientists at Meiji University have been working on for several years. In 2016, Meiji University teacher Homei Miyashita developed an electric fork that could make any food taste saltier than it actually was. In April 2022, he and his team invented a pair of smart chopsticks that could also make food saltier.
The smart chopsticks worked as intended—they sent sodium ions (钠离子) from the food to the mouth of the user to create an enhanced sensation (增强感觉) of saltiness—but they had a big problem as well. Because of their limited surface, the chopsticks needed to be connected to a power source on the user's arm. However, the newest utensils—a smart spoon and bowl—have no such limitations. There is enough space for a built-in battery, so you no longer have to connect them to a power supply every time you use them.
The new utensils can make food taste 1.5 times saltier, which is welcome news to the many people who love salty food, but need to watch their salt intake for health reasons. Even better is the news that the newest smart utensils are expected to hit the Japanese market early next year.
32.Why did the Japanese researchers create smart kitchen utensils
A.To help people have a balanced diet. B.To make salt taste less strong.
C.To let people eat more healthily. D.To search for low-sodium food.
33.What is the advantage(好处) of the newest utensils compared with smart chopsticks
A. Saving energy. B. Being convenient.
C. Being cheap. D. Making food tasty.
34. Which of the following is ready to be sold as products in Japan
A. The smart fork. B. The smart chopsticks.
C. The smart batteries. D. The smart spoon and bowl.
35.What is the purpose of the text
A. To advise people to eat less salt. B. To show some smart kitchen utensils.
C. To explain how to make food tastier. D. To tell us the Japanese's eating habits.
