On the Loess Plateau (黄土高原), a donkey carries boxes of shadow play tools while five players walk with musical instruments on their backs. They travel through mountains and villages. When it becomes dark, they set up the light and paper screen and start their show.
This is a Daoqing shadow play (道情皮影戏). It is an art mixing Daoqing music and shadow play. The player holds the human characters behind the paper screen and plays a series of stories. The characters are usually made of cow skin.
The stage of the Daoqing shadow play is simple. It’s usually a table covered with a large piece of paper. The light was behind the paper screen. As the shadow player moves his fingers, the characters come to life and their looks, dress and movement can be clearly seen from the other side of the screen. The player is also the lead singer. All the characters are played and voiced by him. It’s not an easy job.
Shi Chenglin is an old shadow player. He says it takes a player ten to twenty years to be good at playing the characters well. He used to have students, but they gave up one by one.
To protect the traditional Chinese folk art, the Museum of Daoqing Shadow Play has been built in Gansu, and many artists are trying to spread it to the stage of China, and of the world.

Everybody makes decisions in daily life. Any decision could be the turning point of your life.
I made an important decision when I was in Junior 3. Before I made that decision, I was one of the boys who tried very hard to act as an adult. I didn’t listen to my parents and teachers, and my grades became poor. Then came the high school entrance exam.
At the turning point of my life, my mom wanted to have a conversation with me. I wanted to turn it down but when I looked at her eyes, I felt I couldn’t refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard. Mom smiled and asked again: “I asked: what do you WANT to do ” I never seriously thought about the question. So, I kept silent.
“Whether you want to go on studying or enter the society,” she went on, “it is your own decision. Your life ought to be decided by you, not by anyone else, including me.” After saying that, she had tears in her eyes. For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about myself, my life and what kind of person I wanted to become.
It took me several days to make the biggest decision—I wanted to be a man who makes a difference in the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.
The path (路) to my future became clear to me. I didn’t act rebelliously (叛逆地) any more. With passion (激情) in my heart, I studied hard.

“Made in China” is popular now—and it’s a fashionable one.
The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, the two Chinese sports shoe brands, suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. A famous Chinese sportswear brand Li Ning was at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2018. They showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.
Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customers’ eyes by low price. He told CNN, “They are sure that they can go head to head with foreign brands.”
Maybe it is because China’s young people are now more confident about their own culture. They don’t show immediate interest in Western culture any more.
“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements,” Jin Qu, the manager of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival in 2018. “They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture of Laoganma in China, which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now young people are proud of these Chinese symbols.”
In fact, many stars in the West now are interested in Chinese cultural elements in fashion. Rihanna, a US singer, for example, wore a Chinese red dress to the 2015 Met Gala in New York. The dress was designed and made by Chinese designer Guo Pei.
