A few years ago, I was working in a small office. While everyone was friendly, I decided I wanted to make people smile, but I wanted to do it namelessly. So one evening, I wrote up a few quotes that have inspired me over the years. The next morning, I went to work a bit early and quickly posted them up by the sinks and mirrors in the office restrooms. Maybe someone else would enjoy the quote as much as I had, and perhaps it might just freshen their day, I thought.
For the next few months, some of the quotes got taken down, but I noticed that a couple remained and felt a sense of gratification. Perhaps others liked them, too. Eventually, I finished out my agreement with that organization and conditions brought me to other settings.
A few months ago, I was invited to a reunion with my colleagues to hear how the project I had worked on was going. Towards the end of the event, I went to the bathroom, and the quote that I had written three years earlier was still up in the same spot by the mirror! It read: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but seeing with new eyes. — Marcel Proust”
Maybe the quote simply blended (融入) into the background for the experienced employees, or perhaps it still stood out as a shining reminder each time someone went to the restroom. Whatever the case, it was a sweet moment and reminder. We never know how long a seed planted will take to bloom and give fruit, but keep sowing seeds of kindness from the heart.

My name is Thomas: My belief began when I was just a kid. I dreamed of becoming a doctor.
My mother was a servant. Through her work, she observed that successful people spent a lot of time reading. She announced that my brother and I had to read two books every month and submit our book reports to her. She would mark them up with check marks. Years later we realized her marks were a trick. My mother was nearly illiterate; she had only received a third-grade education. Although we had no money, between the covers of those books, I could go anywhere and be anybody.
When I entered high school, I was an A-student, but not for long. I wanted the fancy clothes. I wanted to hang out with the guys. I went from being an A-student to a B-student and then to a C-student, but I didn’t care; being cool was enough for me.
One night my mother came home from work and I complained about not having enough Italian shirts. She said, “Okay, I’ll give you all the money I make this week, and you can buy the family food and pay the bills. With everything left over, you can have all the Italian shirts you want.” I was very pleased with that arrangement. But once I got through allocating money, there was nothing left. I realized my mother was a financial talent to be able to keep a roof over our heads and feed us with the food on the table. I also realized that immediate satisfaction was going to get me nowhere. Success required intellectual preparation. I went back to my studies and became an A-student again, and eventually I realized my dream and I became a doctor.
My story is really my mother’s story — a woman with little formal education who used her position as a parent to change the lives of her children. There is no job more important than parenting. This I firmly believe.
8.Why did the author’s mother ask his brother and him to read
A.Because she found they liked reading.
B.Because she wanted them to succeed.
C.Because she wanted them to realize her dream.
D.Because she found reading was very interesting.

C.He discontinued his schooling. D.He wasn’t concerned with study.
11.What may be the author’s attitude towards his mother
A.Proud and satisfied. B.Admirable and grateful.
C.Regretful and guilty. D.Understanding and supportive.

People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. Most beaches don't have ramps (坡道) or special walkways to allow disabled visitors to move around easily, or to get in and out of the sea safely. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It's called Seatrac.
Seatrac is a system that was designed to solve this problem. Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can help anyone who has a hard time walking, including older people and pregnant women.
The chair is operated by remote control. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top of the ramp. It's even possible to take a shower in the Seatrac chair after going for a swim.
Seatrac was invented and developed by Mr. Fotiou, a professor and his partners at Greek university. They designed the system and in time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell the systems. The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run.A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar powered. It doesn't require outside power, and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Latvia. The Seatrac service in Greece is gratis to tourists. The Greek government has helped pay for it and hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
12.How can a disabled man in a wheelchair get into the water through Seatrac
A.He rides the chair of the system into the sea.
B.He wheels his wheelchair into the sea by himself.
C.The moving ramp carries his wheelchair into the sea.
D.The staff of the Seatrac drives him to the sea in a chair.
13.What do we know about the Seatrac system
A.It needs recharging regularly.
B.It is automatic and portable.
C.It is easy to operate and manage.
D.It is only intended for disabled persons.
14.What does the underlined"gratis"mean in the last paragraph
A.Accessible. B.Profitable. C.First-class. D.Cost-free.
15.What is the best title of the text
A.Seatrac: Helping Wheelchair Users Enjoy the Sea
B.TOBEA:A New Company Bringing Joy to Tourists
C.A Professor: Helping the Disabled Realize Their Dream
D.A Ramp:Allowing Disabled Visitors to Move Around Easily
