Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have become extremely powerful, surprising even their creators. Most people have probably read a book or seen a movie about an AI or robot that has become so smart that it can take over the world. The AI in stories like these is known as AGI or Artificial General Intelligence. True AGI would be intelligent in many different areas and would be able to learn on its own. Currently, there is no real AGI. Most experts believe it will be many years before an AGI could possibly be created.
Scientists have been working to improve AI models, mainly by training the models on larger and larger collections of information. Those efforts are paying off. The AI tool that has gotten the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company Open AI. ChatGPT appears to be extremely intelligent, which answers quickly in perfect sentences, makes up stories and games, writes essays and much more. Another powerful model called GPT-4 is also developed by the same company. GPT-4 can create and explain jokes, and pass tests.
The rapid progress of recent A I models worries some people. Last week, many computer experts released a letter calling for a six-month pause in any work on AI tools stronger than GPT-4.
The letter claimed AI companies were in a race to create “powerful digital minds” that no one could “understand, predictor control”. The group behind the letter wants government s to develop laws to make sure A I tools are safe. Not all AI experts agree with the letter. Some say the letter makes today’s AI tools sound more intelligent than they really are. Others say it’s more important to worry about real problems in current AI tools rather than imaginary ones in the future.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing powerful AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warming that many people—including leaders—will be thinking about carefully.
4. Why are the book and movie mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To show the surprising power of AI.
B. To clarify AI will take over the world.
C. To state the threat of A I to its creators.
D. To indicate an AI or robot is smart enough.
5. What can be inferred about ChatGPT from Paragraph 2
A. It offers practical instructions on essay-writing skills.
B. It trains AI models on how to present information.
C. It has difficulty in understanding jokes.
D. It produces perfect language response.
6. What’s the letter’s attitude to Chat GPT
A. In different. B. Favorable. C. Concerned. D. Disappointed.
7. What is the text mainly about
A Why AI tools are beneficial to us.
B. Why AI tools are accessible to the public.
C. Whether AI tools are having a bright future.
D. Whether AI tools are becoming too powerful.
C
Whether we are sitting down or standing up, still or moving, body posture influences our mood. Several studies have shown this link between physical posture and mood. Others have shown a relationship between our mood and our cognitive (认知的) performance, including memory, reasoning, learning, and the speed of reaction and processing of information.
So a logical question arises. Can body posture influence our cognitive performance
Previously, a New Zealand team (University of Auckland) carried out an experiment on posture when we walk, especially in the street. The team had found a very clear influence of our posture on our mood and confidence. It appears that walking with a hunched back, bowed head and motionless arms have a negative influence on our mental state.
Indeed, the researchers found that the simple act of straightening up, standing up straight, with your head held high, and gazing forward gives us a serious boost of confidence. Not only does our spontaneous posture have a psychological effect, but by correcting it, it is possible to bring about improvement in the long term.
In this other study, this time carried out by an Austrian team (Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg), researchers observed the same phenomenon, this time in a sitting position. Young adults were invited to participate in tests presented as intended to assess their ability to concentrate. In fact, the researchers had them sit in different postures — from upright to very slumped (消沉) — in order to note their influences on mood and cognition.
A first observation indicates that “sitting upright” is associated with a better overall mood. It is also found to have a positive influence on the speed of processing information and completing tasks, although the test pass rate does not vary significantly with posture.
Finally, and surprisingly enough, blood pressure is a little more favorable in an upright position. To further complete the list of benefits of sitting upright, we will add that it is widely recommended for protecting the back in case of work that requires sitting for a long time.
8. Why does the writer mention the studies at the beginning
A. To introduce what cognitive performance is.
B. To emphasize the importance of body posture.
C. To prove the results of those studies are wrong.
D. To raise a new question to be studied and solved.
9. What does the underlined word “hunched” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Straightened. B. Bent. C. Loose. D. Solid.
10. What does the first study indicate
A. Posture influences our mental state. B. Straightening up has a negative effect.
C. Gazing upward builds up confidence. D. Walking posture is especially important.
11. What can we learn about sitting upright
A. It has mental and physical benefits. B. It helps improve the test pass rate.
C. It requires sitting for a long time. D. It increases the blood pressure.
D
Could the next Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen be a well-engineered AI software program It’s a question becoming increasingly pressing as machine language-learning software continues to evolve.
Much of this is just nerves. Today’s AI creative writing programs are not yet at a stage of development where they pose a serious threat to Colleen Hoover or Charles Dickens. But while attention continues to focus on the possibility of a blanket takeover of human literature by AI, far less consideration has been given to the prospect of AI co-working with humans.
Earlier this month, American sci-fi writer Ken Liu, who had been awarded Hugo and Nebula to his name, joined 12 other professional authors for a writing workshop on Google’s Wordcraft. This AI tool, a language generating model, is not yet publicly available but is advertised as an AI-powered writing assistant that can, when given the right instruction from the writer, provide helpful descriptions, create lists of objects or emotional states, and even brainstorm ideas.
The writers at the workshop, however, emerged with mixed reports. “Wordcraft is too sensible. Wow!” Robin Sloan wrote. “But ‘sensible’ is another word for predictable, overused and boring. My intention here is to produce something unexpected.”
I’m unconvinced that writers awarded the Nobel Prize have much to fear from AI. Their work, and that of countless other novelists, short story writers, dramatists and poets, is too particular, too beautifully unique. Even if a model learned what they had done in the past, it would not be able to predict where their creativity might take them in the future. But for authors who write following a pattern, AI might step in, first as assistants before some day to authorship.
Production-line novels are nothing new. In the 1970s, Barbara Cartland, who wrote more than 723 books in her lifetime, many of which are romance bestsellers, would read her novels for her secretary to type up at the remarkable rate of roughly seven chapters a week. But already machine has replaced the secretary’s role. Perhaps creative writing software isn’t that far from replacing the Mrs. Cartlands of today.
12. Which aspect of AI calls for more attention
A. Its damage to our nerves.
B. Its progress in literary studies.
C. Its cooperation with humans.
D. Its influence on human literature.
13. What can we learn about Wordcraft from the text
A. It generates novels automatically.
B. It outperforms professional writers.
C. Its works receive praises from the public.
D. Its works bear similarity to existing ones.
14. What can writers do to avoid the threat from AI
A Increase writing speed.
B. Use diverse resources.
C. Produce creative works.
D. Follow the latest patterns.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Will AI Replace Human Writers
B. AI Warns Mrs. Cartlands of Today
C. Is Writing Running into a New Era
D. Word craft Lies at the Center of Debate

When people think about ways to help the environment, encourage biodiversity and decrease greenhouse gases, they don’t usually think about the impact of food waste. ____16____
Producing food for a growing global population is a complex challenge with a lot of negative environmental consequences, so food waste creates unnecessary stress on our fragile environment. Here are four things you can do to cut food waste.
____17____ This can help increase the shelf life of many of the most commonly wasted foods, including fruit, vegetables and dairy products. About 90% of milk waste happens in the home. Adjusting your fridge to the right temperature can save 50, 000 tons of milk waste every year.
Single-use plastics. Many of us are seeking to decrease the amount of single-use plastics in our lives, and in our shopping baskets. This is good but often these plastics and packaging keep food fresh for longer. ____18____ Scientists are working on developing methods of treating and storing food that can extend its shelf life.
Dish up smaller portions. This results in up to 20% less food waste. Many of us put our leftovers in the fridge, then forget about them. Fortunately, there are many ways to manage our fridge contents effectively and decrease food waste. ____19____ Labeling leftovers reminds us when they went in and when they need to be eaten by. Try and freeze meat dairy and bread if they are close to spoiling—this will extend their life.
Buy directly from local suppliers. Our food systems and supply chains are incredibly complex, which leads to high levels of food loss and waste. In contrast, buying directly from local suppliers results in less waste. ____20____
A. Set your freezer to below 5℃.
B. Store the food in the fridge.
C. These range from apps, to the humble post-it note, or pen.
D. Support a local business, eat quality food, and decrease waste.
E. The most commonly wasted foods are fresh fruit and vegetables.
F. Fortunately, there are significant developments towards a post-plastic world.
G. Yet food waste is responsible for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

“Okay,” said our teacher, Mrs. Woodland:“It’s time for the gift exchange.” I was actually a little excited. I knew what a lot of the girls had brought, and any of those gifts would be great, especially my best friend Sara’s. She had made some candy and put it in this super cute bear mug(马克杯).
Mrs. Woodland had us put our gifts on our classroom table. Then we opened the gifts like a game. We each drew numbers and we got to the table and chose a wrapped(包装好的) gift when our number was called. But we didn’t necessarily have to. We could take a gift from somebody else that had already had their number called—if we thought we’d like that gift better than the wrapped ones.
When it was my turn, I didn’t take a wrapped gift from the table. And I didn’t take Sara’s either though I really wanted to. I took the perfume(香水) Megan had brought instead. I didn’t have enough money to get Mom something special, but the perfume was really nice. She might really like it.
I was busy thinking about the perfume and whether Mom would like it or not when there was a big commotion(嘈杂). It had been Hannah’ s turn to choose. She was the last one. And unsurprisingly, she didn’t go for the last wrapped gift on the table. Instead, she’d taken Sara’s gift from Lauren. Well, that meant Lauren had to take the wrapped gift. She looked a little upset when she got to the table. Everyone knew the last gift was from Kali. That was why no one had chosen it. Kali was really poor. And she always brought gifts that no one ever wanted. This time, she brought a pair of old—fashioned crocheted potholders(编织的防烫套垫)!
“I don’t want these,” Lauren whined(哀怨).“I want my candy back.”
“No way,” Hannah protested, keeping the mug of chocolate out of Lauren’s reach.
“Then I want Megan’s perfume.” Lauren came over to take my perfume. “Come on, Melanie, trade with me.”
Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Woodland advised me to trade with Lauren since I had always been kind.

Paragraph 2:
“Here,” I said to my mom after I got home, handing her the potholders. “They are an early New Year gift.”

根据第一段“Whether we are sitting down or standing up, still or moving, body posture influences our mood. Several studies have shown this link between physical posture and mood. Others have shown a relationship between our mood and our cognitive (认知的) performance, including memory, reasoning, learning, and the speed of reaction and processing of information.(无论我们是坐着还是站着,静止还是移动,身体姿势都会影响我们的情绪。几项研究表明,身体姿势和情绪之间存在这种联系。其他研究表明,我们的情绪和我们的认知表现之间存在关系,包括记忆、推理、学习、反应速度和信息处理。)”可知,研究证实了身体姿势和情绪之间的联系,以及情绪与认知表现之间的联系。结合第二段“So a logical question arises. Can body posture influence our cognitive performance (因此,一个合乎逻辑的问题出现了。身体姿势会影响我们的认知表现吗?)”可知,上述的研究发现会产生身体姿势与认知表现是否有联系的问题。因此,作者一开始提到这些研究是为了提出一个有待研究和解决的新问题。故选D项。

C Its cooperation with humans.
A. Increase writing speed.
B. Use diverse resources.
C. Produce creative works.
D. Follow the latest patterns.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Will AI Replace Human Writers
B. AI Warns Mrs. Cartlands of Today
C. Is Writing Running into a New Era
D. Word craft Lies at the Center of Debate
C 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第二段的“But while attention continues to focus on the possibility of a blanket takeover of human literature by AI, far less consideration has been given to the prospect of Al co-working with humans.(但是,当我们继续关注人工智能全面接管人类文学的可能性时,人们对人工智能与人类合作的前景的考虑要少得多。)”
根据第四段的““Wordcraft is too sensible. Wow!” Robin Sloan wrote. “But ‘sensible’ is another word for predictable, overused and boring. My intention here is to produce something unexpected.”(Word craft太明智了。哇!但“明智”是可预测、过度使用和无聊的另一个词。我的目的是创造一些意想不到的东西。”)”可知,Wordcraft的作品与现存作品有相似之处。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“Their work, and that of countless other novelists, short story writers, dramatists and poets, is too particular, too beautifully unique. Even if a model learned what they had done in the past, it would not be able to predict where their creativity might take them in the future.(他们的作品,以及无数其他小说家、短篇小说作家、剧作家和诗人的作品,都太过独特,太过美好。即使一个模型了解了他们过去的行为,它也无法预测他们的创造力在未来会把他们带到哪里。)”可知,作家们可以通过创作有创意的作品来避免人工智能的威胁,故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Could the next Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen be a well-engineered AI software program It’s a question becoming increasingly pressing as machine language-learning software continues to evolve.(下一个Ernest Hemingway或Jane Austen会是一个精心设计的人工智能软件程序吗?随着机器语言学习软件的不断发展,这个问题变得越来越紧迫。)”和第二段的“Much of this is just nerves. Today’s AI creative writing programs are not yet at a stage of development where they pose a serious threat to Colleen Hoover or Charles Dickens.(这在很大程度上只是神经紧张。今天的人工智能创意写作程序还没有发展到对Colleen Hoover或Charles Dickens构成严重威胁的阶段。)”可知,本文主要探讨的是人工智能是否会取代人类的作家,因此最好的题目是A选项“Will AI Replace Human Writers (人工智能会取代人类作家吗?)”,故选A。
第二节 七选五 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(每题2 . 5分, 总分12 . 5分)

“No way” Hannah protested, keeping the mug of chocolate out of Lauren’s reach.
“Then I want Megan’s perfume.” Lauren came over to take my perfume. “Come on, Melanie, trade with me.”

Mrs. Woodland advised me to trade with Lauren since I had always been kind. But I was unwilling to give it up because that was for my mum. Then I noticed Kali sitting silently in the back of the classroom. Suddenly I felt ashamed of myself. She had obviously worked hard on the potholders. “Sure,I will take the potholders,” I said to Mrs. Woodland. I gave my best effort to smile and glanced over at Kali. “Did you make them yourself They are really pretty.” I said to Kali. Kali nodded and smiled.
Paragraph 2:
“Here,” I said to my mom after I got home, handing her the potholders. “They are an early New Year gift.” Mom seemed so excited and cheerful that I was worried she thought I made them. I quickly explained that they were made by Kali. Mom smiled and told me she had already known. It turned out that Mrs. Woodland had called to tell her everything happening in the classroom. Mom praised me for handling the situation wonderfully and growing to be a thoughtful young woman. She told me that was the best gift a mother could ask for.
【点睛】本文描写详略得当,使用了短语和高级词汇:trade with, give up,feel ashamed of,glance over, turn out, thoughtful等高级表达;高级句型:But I was unwilling to give it up because that was for my mum. Mom seemed so excited and cheerful that I was worried she thought I made them.
