Text 10
M:In the eighteenth century, when horses were still the main form of transportation, cities became larger and larger.People moved from the countryside and small towns to cities because there was no more work for them to do in small towns and in the countryside. On Sundays and holidays, they liked to leave the cities and had a good time in the countryside. But not every family had a horse.People wanted and needed another form of transportation.Inventors in many countries tried to meet this need.
The first bicycle, which was very simple, appeared in 1790.People called it “the horse on wheels”.Then in 1861, with many improvements, bicycles became a practical form of transportation.People liked bikes because they weren't as expensive as horses. They didn't need to build a special house to keep them in, and they didn't have to feed them. They could ride them in the city and in the countryside.Everybody in a family could ride—men and women, girls and boys.Today many people in every country in the world ride bicycles.

Diets high in protein, particularly protein from plants, have been linked to lower risks of developing disease like diabetes, heart disease and stroke, while regular consumption of red meat and high intake of animal proteins have been linked to several health problems.
But data on the association between different types of proteins and health are conflicting. So researchers based in Iran and the USA set out to measure the potential relation between intake of total, animal, and plant protein and the risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular (心血管的) disease, and cancer.
They reviewed the results of 32 studies that reported risk estimates for all causes, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality (死亡) in adults 19 years of age or older.During the follow-up period of up to 32 years, 113,039 deaths occurred among 715,128 participants. The results show that high intake of total protein was associated with a lower risk of all cause mortality.Intake of plant protein was associated with an 8% lower risk of all cause mortality and a 12% lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality.Intake of animal protein was not significantly associated with risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality.
Possible reasons for the beneficial effects of plant protein include their association with favourable changes in blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, which might help to lower the risk of conditions like heart disease, say the researchers. They say these findings “support current dietary recommendations to the general population”.
Their study excluded differences in the way studies assessed diet and the possibility that some effects may have been due to unmeasured factors. What's more, as most of the included studies were from Western nations, the findings may not be applicable to other countries.
The researchers say they will be performing a more systematic study to assess the association between disease and eating habits.

Food safety monitoring could be more effective
How can we make food safety monitoring as effective as possible with the available resources This is the central topic of the inaugural (就职的) address of professor Klerx on October 20,2022. 36.G .
Food safety is under pressure
37.D .However, there are all kinds of developments that put this safety under pressure. For example, due to climate changes, the presence of pesticide remaining and natural toxins may increase.Other potential chemical and microbiological risks also exist.
Risk-based and cost-effective monitoring
Klerx states that not all food products and ingredients can be checked for all possible food safety risks. 38.F .So choices have to be made. One way to do this is to apply risk-based monitoring. This means that sampling and testing focus on those products and risks that pose the greatest risk to human and animal health.
39.E .Which samples and which amounts will you analyse to achieve the highest impact with your monitoring program In this context, her calculations made in the Netherlands show that approximately 90 fewer samples can be taken each year without reducing the effectiveness of the monitoring.
40.A
In the hope of expanding research into cost-effective monitoring of food safety risks, Klerx combines the research areas of economics and food safety. The chair focuses on risk-based and cost-effective sampling and analysis plans for food safety risks in feed and food production chains. The chair thus contributes to making the decisions that need to be made more apparent, objective, and more scientific.

(2023·辽宁省葫芦岛市高二期末)
A young person who was academically excellent applied for a manager's post in an international company. He passed the written exam with ease, and in the group interview that followed, he impressed the interviewers with willy remarks, passion for work, and creative plans for the company's future. After that, this young man had to face the final interview by the company's director.
The young man walked into the manager's office, feeling he could conquer the whole world with just one hand. The director shook hands with the young man and noticed the excitement and pride in his eyes.He looked into the young man's resume(简历) and saw that the young person did exceptionally well throughout his study life. With a satisfied smile, the director started questioning him.
“Did you ever obtain any scholarship in your school or college?”
“No,” replied the young man.“Then who paid for your education?”
“My father passed away when I was three. It was my mother who paid for my tuition fees. She's a farmer and works all day in the fields,”said the young man.
The director nodded and asked the young man to show his hands.Though confused, the young man held out his hands hesitantly, which were smooth and soft. Then the director asked if the young man had ever helped his mother with farm work. The young man said:“No, she always wanted me to focus on my academic work.Besides, she knows her work well and could do everything much faster than I could.”
Learning the reply, the director told the young man that when he returned to his home that day,he should clean his mother's hands, and after that, he could come back and see him and report what he learned.Feeling there was a chance for him to get the job, the young man was delighted. When he returned home with a spring in his feel, he cheerfully requested his mother to let him clean her hands.Listening to this strange request, his mother felt astonished but happy. With mixed emotions, she showed her hands to him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
Now this young man started to clean his mother's hands gently. ___________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The following day he went to the director's office again. ___________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
解析:
根据第一段首句可知该段人物围绕这个年轻人和妈妈,根据原文倒数第二段中的“Though confused, the young man held out his hands hesitantly, which were smooth and soft. Then the director asked if the young man had ever helped his mother with farm work.”
Paragraph 1:
Now this young man started to clean his mother's hands gently. For the first time, he noticed his mother's hands were rough with cuts and calluses. Some of the cuts were so deep that she shivered with pain when they were cleaned. It was not until that moment that the young man started to understand the sacrifice his mother had made to ensure he could get a good education.Stroking his mother's hands with both affection and guilt, he felt a lump in his throat, tears of admiration and sorrow streaming down his face.
Paragraph 2:
The following day he went to the director's office again. His face was calm, and the excitement and pride in his eyes were replaced by sincerity and gratitude.“Thank you for this valuable lesson,” said the young man with tears glittering in his eyes. Then he continued to tell the manager that he was regretful about being an insensitive son who had been obsessed with grades and career opportunities, neglecting how his mother had suffered all these years. The manager listened attentively and finally said with a smile curving his lips, “I'm glad you've gained the power of appreciation, which is an essential quality in a manager. You are hired.”UNIT 2 学业质量检测

“Age is just a number” is a saying that some people might disagree with, but for healthy and fit great-grandmother Anne Sheppard, nothing could be more true.
At 100 years old, Anne can kick, crunch and do full push-ups.And she is always exercising with other fitness fans who are almost 70 years her junior in the gym.South Melbourne-born Anne worked at the local clothing factory while her husband Max was away at work with the army. When the couple retired in 1981, they signed up to their local gym, where Anne is still a member 40 years later.“I feel stronger and fitter than before!” Anne says in an interview from her gym in Melbourne. She has just finished a rigorous training class—one of five group courses she attends throughout the week.“I just love it and I want to keep going as long as I can,” she smiles.“It's part of my life now—my husband has passed away and now I'm on my own.The gym is my second family and I'd be lost without them.”
“Anne is a superstar—no matter where she goes, everyone is attracted to her! I know she inspires us to do whatever we set our minds to.We're all jealous because we want to get to 100 years old and be like her,” says Jan, a friend of Anne in the gym.
Exercise has always been an important part of life for Anne.Despite going to the gym three days a week, Anne also keeps active in other ways, and regularly walks to and from the local supermarket.Life has now slowed a little bit for Anne.As for her next personal best, her goal is to keep going to the gym. That's how Anne enjoys her life.
