To some people, there is nothing better than the smell of meat cooking over an open air. Throughout the world, people love to eat barbecue, because it helps bring friends and families together. Having a barbecue makes people think about how things were with their ancestors. Cooking over coals or an open fire makes people feel more social.
Most countries have barbecue traditions and they usually take place on national holidays. In the United States, it is a tradition to have a barbecue of hamburgers and hot dogs on July 4, which is Independence Day.
In South America, especially in Argentina, barbecue is a way of life. All sorts of meats and sausages are put on a large grill* together over hot coals. Barbecue is even considered the national dish in Argentina, and it is given the name asado in Spanish. This means not only the dish, but also the social event that surrounds an Argentinean barbecue.
When a person speaks about Turkish barbecue, the kebab immediately comes to mind. The tradition of taking different meats, and sometimes vegetables as well, and spearing* them with a sharp stick has crossed cultural lines today. Especially anywhere in the English-speaking world, the thought of shish-kebab will make barbecue lovers’ mouths water.
Wherever you go in the world, you are almost certain to come across a local method of preparing barbecue. If you visit different places, be brave and try the special local food.

It’s a popular belief that fish can’t remember anything for longer than seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t know you or any of their friends—every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.
But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A recent study has found that fish have much better memories than we used to think. In fact, certain kinds of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago, reported BBC.
In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank* to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again.
This suggested that they could remember their past experiences. Researchers used computer software to watch the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food.
In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved offendedly in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past fights. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.
“If fish are able to remember that a certain area has safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives in danger.” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence*.
So next time you’re watching your pet fish from outside the tank, perhaps you should feel closer to them—they may remember who you are.
38. The study shows fish have better ________ than people thought.

B. A special kind of fish can remember things for 12 days.
C. Researchers have trained fish how to survive in the wild.
D. Fish have been placed fourth on the list of smart animals.
41. What Trevor Hamilton said in the Paragraph 6 tells us ________.
A. it’s easy for fish to find a place with safe food
B. it’s dangerous for fish to fight for their friends
C. it’s necessary for fish to remember their home
D. it’s important for fish to have a good memory

“I had to leave school when I was thirteen, if I had half the chances that you have, I’d…” Mr. Ridley was giving a lesson to his boy, Greg again. He was disappointed that Greg did poorly at school and didn’t allow him to play basketball any more.
Feeling upset, Greg decided to leave home. On the way, it rained heavily. Greg entered an old flat. There he met a homeless old man named Lemon Brown.

Lemon carefully took the rags away from his right leg, there was a piece of plastic*.

Greg looked at the clippings* in surprise. All of them were reviews of shows Lemon had been in when he was young.
“I used to travel around and sing to make money for my family. When my son Jesse grew up to be a soldier, I had nothing to give him except these things that told him who I was, and where he came from.”
“Then what happened ” Greg asked.
“One time I went home and got a letter saying Jesse died in the war. The army sent back all the things Jesse used to carry around—those old clippings. That was my treasure, and when I gave it to him, he treated it just like a treasure. Isn’t that something ”
“I guess so,” Greg said. “But you really think that treasure of yours was worth* fighting against the bad guys ”
“As a boy, you’re sure to ask such a foolish question. What else can be more valuable than what a man can pass on to his son or daughter ” Lemon said as he put his treasure back in place.
The rain stopped then, Greg remembered what his father said to him and decided to go home. He believed Lemon would be OK with his memories and treasure.
When he rang the bell, Greg thought of the lesson his father would give him next, and smiled.
