Chemistry is usually thought to be more difficult than other subjects, at least for the beginners. There are some reasons for this idea. For one thing, chemistry has a very specialized vocabulary(学科专用语汇). At first, studying chemistry is like learning a new language. Also, some concepts(概念)of chemistry are hard to understand. However, with hard work and careful study, you can finish this subject successfully and even enjoy it. Here are some suggestions to help you develop good study habits and better understand the topics in the book:
Firstly, take a class on time. Listen to your teacher and take careful notes in class. If possible, always review the topics you learn in class, and review your notes on the same day.
Secondly, think carefully whether you really understand the meaning of a term or the use of an equation(方程式). A good way to test your understanding is to explain a concept to a classmate or someone else.
Thirdly, pay attention to things which have something to do with chemistry in life. Watch or do experiments in class carefully.
Fourthly, question often and do not be afraid to ask your teacher or classmates for help.
You will find that chemistry is much more than numbers, formulas(分子式)and equations. It's often used in daily life just like math and physics. Once you fall in love with it, you'll get lots of fun.
16. How many suggestions does the writer give the readers
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
17. The writer thinks that a good way to test your understanding of the formula "H2CO3" is to__________.

C. explain it to someone else D. ask others the meaning of it

Dear future Linda (or rather myself),
I hope when you read this letter you don’t find my writing too messy! At the moment, I’m 15 years old and living at home with my family. I love school and have lots of good friends. We do lots of fun things together like parties, ice skating and swimming. My biggest worry is not doing well in my school exams, but I’m working really hard,so hopefully I have nothing to worry about.
There’s so much I (you!) want to do. I hope you’ve travelled all over the world and seen lots of things and met lots of people. I hope you have visited the Great Wall in China and the pyramids in Egypt, shopped in New York City and in Paris, seen polar bears in Norway and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I’ve just remembered, you always wanted to see elephants in India—I hope you’ve managed to do that too.
I promise myself I’ll always try my best and have no regrets. I never want to forget where every step of my life has taken me. Already it seems as if so much has happened. I’ve moved from primary to junior middle school (about to graduate), been taught to swim and dance (I love ballet dancing), learned to speak Chinese and French, and raised money for those in need by selling old toys and books.
I really hope you’re happy. I hope you have a successful job that you enjoy doing and look forward to each morning when you wake up. I hope you’re surrounded by good friends and family and maybe also have a family of your own. More than anything else, I hope you’ve enjoyed every single moment so far!
Love Linda

Many people think of the brain as a mystery. They don't know much about intelligence (智力) and how it works. When they do think about what intelligence is, many people believe that a person is born smart, average, or stupid—and stays that way in the whole life. But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle(肌肉)—it changes and gets stronger when you use it. And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn.
Everyone knows that when you lift weights, your muscles get bigger and you get stronger. A person who can't lift(举起) 20 pounds when he/she starts exercising can get strong enough to lift 100 pounds after working out for a long time. That's because the muscles become larger and stronger with exercise. And when you stop exercising, the muscles shrink and you get weaker. That's why people say "Use it or lose it!".
But most people don't know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise. Inside the cortex(皮层)of the brain are billions of tiny nerve cells(细胞), called neurons. The nerve cells have branches connecting them to other cells in a complicated munication between these brain cells is what allows us to think and solve problems. When you learn new things, these tiny connections in the brain actually multiply and get stronger. The more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow. Then, things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do—like speaking a foreign language or doing algebra(代数)—seem to become easy after learning them for a period of time. The result is a stronger, smarter brain.
Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied animals' brains. They found out that animals that lived in a challenging environment were more "perspicacious"—they were better at solving problems and learning new things.
23.According to the first paragraph, ______.
A. the function(作用) of our brain is like that of the muscle
B. until now it's impossible to explain the brain's mystery
C. many people believe one's intelligence is naturally determined(决定)
D. one's brain grows stronger as the age increases
24.Training muscles is compared to ______.
A. using the brain B. connecting things in your brain
C. lifting weights D. doing research about the brain
25.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The complex structure of the brain.
B. How changes in the muscles affect the brain.
C. The importance of the brain.
D. How the brain becomes stronger by learning new things.
26.What does the underlined word "perspicacious" in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Strong. B. Smart. C. Popular. D. Active.

Edward rose early on the New-year morning. He looked in every room and wished a Happy New Year to his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat that to those he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. “My dear boy,” said his father, “here are some books for you, more as a prize for your goodness of heart than as a New-year gift”
“I saw you give the money cheerfully to the poor German family. It was nice for a little boy to do so. Be always ready to help others and every year of your life will be to you a Happy New Year.”
27.Edward expected to _____ with the money he got from his father.

Often when we’re going through a hard time, we feel alone, and just having someone notice and understand is enough to make us feel loved and supported. Sherry was once upset and disappointed while working on a hard job. Then her boss gave her a card. The card with just two little words was what made her realize she wasn’t alone.
The two words You Matter (重要).
Sherry said she almost cried when she read the message. “I’ve fought at times with my own self-worth, and when I received the card, it felt like a question I carried around with me had been answered — I matter.”
Sherry was so touched that she ordered 100 of her own cards to give away.
“I met a woman who looked to be in her 60s. When I asked her how she was doing, the woman said, ‘Not so good. My husband just lost his job. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get through the holidays. My heart ached. I wanted to help but didn’t know how. Then I remembered something in my bag that might help her. ‘It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time. I’d like to give you something. And I handed her a “You Matter” card. When she read it, she began to cry. ‘You have no idea how much this means to me, she said thankfully.”
“Without that card, I wouldn’t have gone up to that woman and said anything,” she says. Sherry thought the experience was so powerful that she decided to send sets of 30 “You Matter” cards free to anyone who signed up online as long as the person promised to give the cards away. She called the event the “You Matter Marathon (马拉松)” because the cards can pass on people’s kindness and care about each other.
The idea was more successful than she expected and the cards have changed many people’s lives. Julie, a participant (参与者), says, “Having the ‘You Matter’ cards ready to hand out has allowed me to really look at people. This is making me a much more connected human.”

Chemistry is usually thought to be more difficult than other subjects, at least for the beginners.
There are some reasons for this idea. For one thing, chemistry has a very specialized vocabulary(学
科专用语汇). At first, studying chemistry is like learning a new language. Also, some concepts(概
念)of chemistry are hard to understand. However, with hard work and careful study, you can finish
this subject successfully and even enjoy it. Here are some suggestions to help you develop good
study habits and better understand the topics in the book:
Firstly, take a class on time. Listen to your teacher and take careful notes in class. If possible,
always review the topics you learn in class, and review your notes on the same day.
Secondly, think carefully whether you really understand the meaning of a term or the use of an
equation(方程式). A good way to test your understanding is to explain a concept to a classmate or
someone else.
Thirdly, pay attention to things which have something to do with chemistry in life. Watch or do
experiments in class carefully.
Fourthly, question often and do not be afraid to ask your teacher or classmates for help.
You will find that chemistry is much more than numbers, formulas(分子式)and equations. It's
often used in daily life just like math and physics. Once you fall in love with it, you'll get lots of
fun.
16. How many suggestions does the writer give the readers
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

Dear future Linda (or rather myself),
I hope when you read this letter you don’t find my writing too messy! At the moment, I’m 15
years old and living at home with my family. I love school and have lots of good friends. We do lots
of fun things together like parties, ice skating and swimming. My biggest worry is not doing well in
my school exams, but I’m working really hard,so hopefully I have nothing to worry about.
There’s so much I (you!) want to do. I hope you’ve travelled all over the world and seen lots of
things and met lots of people. I hope you have visited the Great Wall in China and the pyramids in
Egypt, shopped in New York City and in Paris, seen polar bears in Norway and the Great Barrier
Reef in Australia. I’ve just remembered, you always wanted to see elephants in India—I hope
you’ve managed to do that too.
I promise myself I’ll always try my best and have no regrets. I never want to forget where every
step of my life has taken me. Already it seems as if so much has happened. I’ve moved from
primary to junior middle school (about to graduate), been taught to swim and dance (I love ballet
dancing), learned to speak Chinese and French, and raised money for those in need by selling old
toys and books.
I really hope you’re happy. I hope you have a successful job that you enjoy doing and look
forward to each morning when you wake up. I hope you’re surrounded by good friends and family
and maybe also have a family of your own. More than anything else, I hope you’ve enjoyed every
single moment so far!
Love Linda

Many people think of the brain as a mystery. They don't know much about intelligence (智力)
and how it works. When they do think about what intelligence is, many people believe that a person
is born smart, average, or stupid—and stays that way in the whole life. But new research shows that
the brain is more like a muscle(肌肉)—it changes and gets stronger when you use it. And scientists
have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn.
Everyone knows that when you lift weights, your muscles get bigger and you get stronger. A
person who can't lift(举起) 20 pounds when he/she starts exercising can get strong enough to lift
100 pounds after working out for a long time. That's because the muscles become larger and
stronger with exercise. And when you stop exercising, the muscles shrink and you get weaker.
That's why people say "Use it or lose it!".
But most people don't know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain
change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise. Inside the cortex(皮层)of the brain
are billions of tiny nerve cells(细胞), called neurons. The nerve cells have branches connecting
them to other cells in a complicated munication between these brain cells is what
allows us to think and solve problems. When you learn new things, these tiny connections in the
brain actually multiply and get stronger. The more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your
brain cells grow. Then, things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do—like
speaking a foreign language or doing algebra(代数)—seem to become easy after learning them for
a period of time. The result is a stronger, smarter brain.
Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied
animals' brains. They found out that animals that lived in a challenging environment were more
"perspicacious"—they were better at solving problems and learning new things.

He looked in every room and wished a Happy
New Year to his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat that to those he might meet. When he
came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them.
He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. He left

till next New Year.”
“My dear boy,” said his father, “here are some books for you, more as a prize for your
goodness of heart than as a New-year gift”

to do so. Be always ready to help others and every year of your life will be to you a Happy New
Year.”

Often when we’re going through a hard time, we feel alone, and just having someone notice
and understand is enough to make us feel loved and supported. Sherry was once upset and

disappointed while working on a hard job. Then her boss gave her a card. The card with just two
little words was what made her realize she wasn’t alone.
The two words You Matter (重要).
Sherry said she almost cried when she read the message. “I’ve fought at times with my own
self-worth, and when I received the card, it felt like a question I carried around with me had been
answered — I matter.”
Sherry was so touched that she ordered 100 of her own cards to give away.
“I met a woman who looked to be in her 60s. When I asked her how she was doing, the woman
said, ‘Not so good. My husband just lost his job. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get
through the holidays. My heart ached. I wanted to help but didn’t know how. Then I remembered
something in my bag that might help her. ‘It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time. I’d
like to give you something. And I handed her a “You Matter” card. When she read it, she began to
cry. ‘You have no idea how much this means to me, she said thankfully.”
“Without that card, I wouldn’t have gone up to that woman and said anything,” she says.
Sherry thought the experience was so powerful that she decided to send sets of 30 “You Matter”
cards free to anyone who signed up online as long as the person promised to give the cards away.
She called the event the “You Matter Marathon (马拉松)” because the cards can pass on people’s
kindness and care about each other.
The idea was more successful than she expected and the cards have changed many people’s
