Mrs. White smiled and said she didn’t focus on my mistakes. Instead, she encouraged me
to express my thoughts and ideas freely through writing. She believed that by focusing on the
positive aspects of my writing, I would eventually gain the confidence to work on improving
the areas where I needed help. Mrs. White’s approach was revolutionary and effective. Under
her guidance, I started to enjoy writing, and my skills improved significantly.
Shortly after, there was a writing competition. I went to Mrs. White’s office, asking shyly
whether I could attend the writing competition. To my surprise, she not only agreed but also
encouraged me to participate. She said that I had come a long way and that my writing skills
were much better. She believed that participating in a competition would give me an
opportunity to showcase my talents and inspire others who might be struggling with similar
challenges. Mrs. White’s encouragement were instrumental in my success as a writer. I will
always be grateful to her for her guidance and support.

Text 10
A few years ago, I moved to the countryside. The house close to mine was occupied by an
old lady. She was about sixty years old and lived all by herself. I used to take a morning walk
and on my way home the old lady would invite me to her house for a cup coffee. Soon we
became good friends. We talked about a lot of things when we were together. But she never
mentioned her family. It seemed that she had no relatives and her only life companion was her
pet-a dog she called Tommy. One night in July, I was sleeping when I was woken by the
barking of a dog. I opened the door, and I was surprised to find Tommy there. When the dog
saw me, he started running toward the house of its owner. He stopped for a while, barked at me
and then ran again. I followed the dog to my neighbor’s house and found the old lady lying on
the floor. I rushed her to the hospital. After a successful treatment, the old lady was finally out
of danger. The doctor told me that the old lad had had a heart attack, and if I hadn’t taken her to
the hospital immediately, she would be in danger.

The program is offered in four eight-week sessions that train 7 to 15 young people at a
time. Some find jobs at Sweet Generation after graduation. Chasan said that around 75 percent
of the staff are made up of former interns. One is Deanna Bing, 18, now a freshman at Baruch
College who began working in July 2019 after interning. “I basically do everything, which
includes making coffee, taking cake orders and dealing with our day-to-day customers,” said
Bing. She explained how RISE has helped her grow. “It’s amazing. It’s the first time I’ve ever
felt needed in a job. Usually it isn’t like your typical fast-food job. No one really needs you.
Here, your job, your role, and your responsibilities are so needed that if you miss your task for
the day, it messes with production entirely.

Researchers have been divided over whether brain-training games really works. Some
studies have found benefits while others have shown none.
The University of Aberdeen released its findings from a 15-year-long study that involved
498 participants who were born in 1936. Researchers determined that no matter how many
brain-stimulating activities participants did, they were all destined(注定的) to experience
mental decline as they aged. Those who regularly performed brain games throughout their
young-adult and middle-aged years began their mental decline later in life and reached a much
higher peak compared to those who didn’t perform these activities.
Some other studies showed that brain games do help people get better at one specific task,
but there’s less evidence that brain training can help you get better at related tasks. However, a
new study led by the University of California found that online brain games enable people in
their 70s and 80s to multitask cognitively(认知地)as well as people who are 50 years younger.

“ We discovered that people in the upper age ranges who completed specific training tasks were
able to improve their brain’s ability to switch between different tasks in the game at a level
similar to untrained 20- and 30-year-olds,” said lead author Mark Steyvers.
A new study found some of the benefits of brain games may be due to placebo effects(安
慰剂效应).Researchers recruited 50 participants for the study using two different flier(s 传单).
One flier mentioned that “numerous studies have shown that working memory training can
increase intelligence”. The other flier didn’t mention brain training or any benefits. All of the
study participants took an IQ test, and then did an hour of brain training—not enough, the
researchers pointed out, to likely boost anyone’s intelligence. The next day, the participants
took another IQ test. Those who were told of brain-training benefits had a 5-10 point boost in
their IQ score, while those who heard nothing of the benefits tested about the same as they did
before the training.
28. According to paragraph 2, what will happen to those who used to do brain games
A. Their mental decline will come earlier.
B. They will suffer mental decline later.
C. They will experience no mental decline.
D. Their intelligence will reach a peak earlier.
29. What did the University of California’s study find out about brain games
A. They have no effect on people’s intelligence.
B. They can help improve people’s specific skills.
C. They only improve the brain’s ability of the youth.
D. They can help improve multitasking abilities of the elderly.
30.Who performed better in the study mentioned in paragraph 4
A. Those who were good at various games.
B. Those who got used to intelligence tests.
C. Those who heard of brain-training benefits.
D. Those who got longer hours of brain training.
31. What’s the text mainly about
A. Various benefits of brain-training games.
B. The relationship between games and brain.
C. Whether brain-training games increase intelligence.
D. How brain-training games affect mental performance.

Coral reefs(礁) are filled with a diverse range of marine lives. Some fish are more
beautiful to humans than others, and their outward(外表的)appearance could be influencing
how we decide which species to protect. The fish humans find the ugliest are the most
ecologically and, evolutionarily(进化上)distinct. But perhaps more importantly, the uglier
species are also more likely to be threatened, according to a new paper published in the journal
PLOS Biology.
Researchers showed 481 photographs of ray-finned reef fishes to 13,000 members of the
public. With that data, they then trained a computer model to generate subsequent predictions

for an additional 4,400 photographs of 2,417 of the most common reef fish species. They next
compared the aesthetic(审美的)rating of each species with other characteristics, including
evolutionary history, distinctiveness from other fish, conservation position and importance to
fisheries.
After analyzing the numbers, researchers found that the fish humans rated as the most
beautiful tended to be less ecologically and evolutionarily distinct. Prettier fish were also more
likely to be listed as species of “least concern” on the International Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN) Red List.
On the contrary, the fish that humans found to be the least attractive were the most
ecologically and evolutionarily distinct, and they were more likely to be listed as “threatened”
on the IUCN Red List. Unattractive species also tended to bring more income to the fishermen,
which puts them at higher risk of overfishing.
When conservation funding and energy is limited, uglier fish are likely to be
overshadowed by more beautiful fish. It’s not surprising that humans are easily attracted by
beautiful wildlife, but the findings point to important mismatches between potential public
support for conservation and the species most in need of this support.
“To minimize the impact of aesthetic biases(偏见), scientists, conservation groups and
policymakers may need to change how they communicate about wildlife,” the researchers write
in the paper. “Making people more aware of the roles uglier fish play in reef ecosystems could
help them gain more support. In other words, never judge a fish by its look.”
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The focus of the study. B. The process of the study.
C. The purpose of the study. D. The background of the study.
33. Why is there a stronger possibility that uglier fish will be overfished
A. They are much easier to hunt. B. They are financially valuable.
C. They are ecologically distinct. D. They are rare and look special.
34. Why do people tend to pay more attention to the beautiful fish when the conservation
funding and energy is limited
A. Because beautiful fish play a more important role in reef ecosystem.
B. Because beautiful fish are ecologically and evolutionarily distinct.
C. Because beautiful fish are more likely to be threatened.
D. Because beautiful fish are more attractive.
35. Which of the following is suggested by the researchers
A. Building natural reserves worldwide for uglier fish.
B. Attempting to raise people’s environmental awareness.
C. Enriching the understanding of uglier fish’s appearance.
D. Educating people on uglier fish’s ecological importance.

efficiency, and employee satisfaction. Here are some ways to help build teamwork in the office.
36 You should conduct yourself in the way you would like your team members to
behave. A manager should make a constant effort to live up to the change he or she would like
to see in the office. This way your team will know how you expect them to behave.
Strengthen office roles. As a manager or supervisor, your role is sort of a coach to your
employees. 37 These roles should be clear to the employees, and should help work
towards the shared goal you have for your company.
Promote open communication. Miscommunication(错误传达) is threatening to the
development of any company. 38 It’s better to accidentally over-communicate
than to risk under-communicating. Clarify errors and clear up misunderstandings as soon as
they arise.
Deal with non-cooperative behavior. At some point, you may find someone who rejects
team work and has a hard time being a team player among your work team. 39 Then
explain why his or her behavior is a problem, and encourage him or her to correct the behavior
for the improvement of the work environment.
Start a sports club. Team work is a natural part of team sports, which explains why so
many offices host after-work sports clubs. Starting volleyball or bowling club can give your
employees a chance to work together as a team. 40
A. Lead by example.
B. Conduct group exercises.
C. But each employee should have a role as well.
D. If so, have a calm, direct conversation with this employee.
E. It could cause the team of employees to lose focus and trust.
F. Besides, it is also a good way to relax and enjoy down time together.
G. Fast typing is an essential business skill that every employee should possess.

Most people don’t remember how they learned to read and write because it happened to
them naturally. Writing just means turning thoughts into words on a page. But it is a completely
different story if you are born with Dyslexia(阅读障碍), a learning disability which affects the
skills involved in reading, spelling and writing. Writing is a big challenge for these kids and
unfortunately, I was one of them.
When I was in kindergarten, I was always struggling with my writing. For example, I used
to misspell “beautiful”. Never could I quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”. It
annoyed my teacher very much for I happened to love using “beautiful” a lot. If I was going to
use the word so much, she figured the least I could do was to spell it right. My mom
complained that I just didn’t try hard. Every time I got my paper back, I dared not open it
because I knew it must be full of red lines and a disappointing “C”.
Two years later, I went to a primary school, and still had far from satisfactory writing. But
a new teacher, Mrs. White, came into my life. In my eyes, she was very beautiful. She had
bright blue eyes, short dark hair, red lips and fair skin, as beautiful as SnowWhite.
Actually, I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once
told me that we used to write articles a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would
look at it and see there were so many mistakes, both in grammar and spelling. But there were
no red corrections, always a star and sometimes even a “Good”, which would make my heart
cry with happiness. I always looked forward to the next writing class. It worried my mother,
though, thinking Mrs. White was an irresponsible teacher. So one day when she went in to meet
Mrs. White for one of those parent-teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my
mistakes and why she never red-penciled in the wrong spellings of words or grammatical
errors.
