World Book Day falls on April 23rd every year, but do you know that it is also Shakespeare Day Everybody may have heard of Shakespeare, but do you know how many plays he wrote
Shakespeare’s plays have three kinds: tragedies, comedies and histories. His most famous play is the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, which deals with two young lovers who are not allowed to marry by their parents. Other tragedies include Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth.
Shakespeare’s comedies include Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night is a play about unclear identities. Two twins are shipwrecked (遭海难) and the sister, Viola, dresses up as her brother, Sebastian, who she thinks is dead. It’s funny, because the brother reappears and there’s a big love problem going on: Viola is in love with the Duke, who is in love with Olivia, who falls in love with Sebastian except that she doesn’t realize that Sebastian is actually Viola dressed up!
Everybody falls in love with the wrong person, but it is all made right in the end.
Some of his history plays, such as Antony and Cleopatra, Richard III and Henry V, are based on the lives of real historical people. In Antony and Cleopatra, Cleopatra becomes Antony’s girlfriend and Antony becomes so crazy about her that he loses control of the army. Cleopatra kills herself in the end and Antony kills himself too.
Shakespeare’s plays can be very difficult sometimes. Some of the themes they deal with are heavy, so they almost always include a lighter subplot with characters that are not so important. They are often used in tragedies to lighten the mood of the play and to keep the audience interested in the main plot.
4. Which is a tragedy character
A. Viola. B. Antony. C. Sebastian. D. Hamlet.
5. What can be inferred from paragraph3
A. Viola likes dressing up as her brother for fun. B. The Duke marries Olivia at last.
C. Twelfth Night has a sad ending. D. Olivia finally falls in love with Sebastian.
6. What can we know about Shakespeare’s history plays
A. There are only two famous history plays.
B. Some of them are inspired by real people living in the past.
C. Real historical events can be found in every history play.
D. They are more difficult than tragedies and comedies.
7. Why is the subplot added to Shakespeare’s plays
A To help relax the audience and attract their interest in the main theme.
B. To make it easy for audience to understand the plays.
C To make the difficult plots simple.
D. To help develop the main plot.

I took my elementary-aged son and his two hungry friends to a cafeteria within a store for lunch after church, because it’s really affordable and we are not all that comfortable financially.
How awful to load up our trays, get up to the register and then find out my wallet was missing! Yet the cashier empathized with the situation and helped me think through some ideas for alternative payment. Then the cashier offered to pay for the meal and have me reimburse her via a payment app. So, I stood to the side to download it, but because my phone is an old one and there were tech problems, this was taking me a very long time.
I came so very close to panicking (恐慌). Everything was loud, it got so hot there, I was dizzy. The boys were jumping around and freaking me out, so I sent them on various “errands (差事)” to keep them busy. And then I remembered to breathe. Finally the cashier called me back over to the register and handed me a receipt, telling me, “Here you go. It’s paid for. It’s on me. Enjoy your meal.” I was touched and sincerely thanked her! Reading the receipt, it looked like she actually paid for the meal personally without using a discount code.
The cashier hadn’t known my son’s two friends came from an insecure food situation at home. I tried to invite them over for snacks and meals as often as possible. They hadn’t eaten yet, and this cafeteria meal with us was likely to be their only one today. My gratefulness for this cashier’s generosity went deeper than her simply saving me from the embarrassment of a missing wallet. Her kindness ensured these boys had food for the day— literally.
After our meal, I went back to the register to thank her and repay her, as I’d finally gotten the app working on my phone. But she was gone, and the other workers weren’t sure of her name because she was new. I made sure to write to the company and tell them how awesome their cashier was.
8. Why did the author treat the children to lunch in a cafeteria
A. Because free food was provided there.
B. Because it was a short distance away from the church.
C. Because the food there was inexpensive.
D. Because the food there suited their taste.
9. What does the underlined word “reimburse” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Ask for. B. Pay back. C. Look for. D. Bring back.
10. The author sent the children on various “errands” so as to ________.
A. let them have fun B. teach them something useful
C. make them work hard D. stop them disturbing her
11. Which of the following is NOT the reason for the author’s gratefulness to the cashier
A. Because the cashier offered to pay for them.
B. Because the cashier saved her from the trouble of missing a wallet.
C. Because the cashier freed the boys of hunger for that day.
D. Because the cashier taught the author how to download a payment app.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. D

【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Then the cashier offered to pay for the meal (然后收银员提出为这顿饭买单)”和下文“So, I stood to the side to download it (所以,我站在一旁下载软件)”可推知,收银员想出的方法是:她先自己买单,然后作者下载软件,通过软件把钱还给她。由此可知,reimburse意思是“偿还”,与pay back意思一致。故选B项。

【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Finally the cashier called me back over to the register and handed me a receipt, telling me, “Here you go. It’s paid for. It’s on me. Enjoy your meal.” I was touched and sincerely thanked her! Her kindness ensured these boys had food for the day— literally. (我对这位收银员慷慨解囊的感激之情远不止她把我从钱包丢失的尴尬中救了出来。她的善良确保了这些男孩这一天都有食物吃——字面意义上地)”可知,作者感谢这位收银员是因为她为他们买了单,帮作者脱离了丢失钱包的麻烦,在那天让孩子们免于饥饿,D项“因为收银员教作者如何下载支付软件”并未提及。故选D项。

Stay-at-home kids are named “generation nini” in Spain. They are those adults who still live at home and are neither working nor studying. But the problem is by no means limited to Spain. It is a worldwide problem.
In Italy, they are known as “bamboccioni” or big babies. There are nearly 60 percent of 18 to 34-year-old adults still living in their parents’ home, up from almost 50 percent since 1983. Last year, an Italian government minister admitted that his mother washed his clothes and made the bed for him until he was 30. He demanded a law forcing young Italians to leave their parents’ home at 18 to stop them becoming hopelessly dependent on their parents.
In the UK, the government has made the term NEETS — not in employment, education or training for these children. In England alone, the percent of NEETS aged 19-24 surged to 18. 8 percent of the age group in the last quarter of 2010, up 1.4 percent on the same period a year before. The number of British men in their 20s living with their parents has risen from 59 percent to 80 percent in the past 15 years, while the number of women has risen from 41 percent to 50 percent. The average age of the first-time house buyers is now 38.
In the US, the problem is known as the “Full Nest Syndrome (综合症)”. Adults there are left struggling to support adult children who have stayed at home with student debts and facing few job opportunities in a weak economy. A recent study showed almost a third of American adults aged 34 and under are living with their parents.

Every year, thousands of runners gather in Australia to run the yearly 543. 7- mile (875- kilometer)endurance (忍耐力) course from Sydney to Melbourne.
It is thought to be one of the world ‘s toughest ultra - marathons (超级马拉松), which can take up to five days to cross the finish line. So only the top athletes of the game typically dare to take it on. They are young (generally under 30), and obviously well equipped and trained. Most importantly, with the help of high-level teams, they will draw up a detailed plan to make sure that they will have enough time for running and sleeping during the race.
But all that changed when a 61- year - old competitor by the name of Cliff Young entered it. Cliff had always dreamed of taking part in the ultra - marathon since he heard of the event when he was young. Finally, with the support of his family, he signed up for it and now he wandered to the starting blocks (起跑器). But he made a strange sight. Everyone was laughing at his everyday overalls (连体工装裤) and work boots (靴子) with his race number proudly displayed on the back of his shirt.
However, Cliff never cared about it. When questioned by the media why he dared to take part in such a challenging running, he told the curious press that his hard - working background gave him all the skills and endurance he’d need to finish the race, saying: “I grew up on a farm where we couldn’t afford horses or tractors, and the whole time I was growing up, whenever the storms would roll in, I’d have to go out and round up the sheep. We had 2, 000 sheep on 2, 000 acres. Sometimes I would have to run those sheep for two or three days. It took a long time, but I’d always catch them. I believe I can run this race. So do my family!” Hearing this, they were so shocked and thought him to be too confident. No one believed he would win, and some even doubt whether he would finish the game.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
And from the moment the runners left the starting blocks, it looked like the skeptics (怀疑者) would be proved right.

However, according to Cliff, it was all part of his plan.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】possible version:
And from the moment the runners left the starting blocks, it looked like the skeptics (怀疑者) would be proved right. In the first miles of the race, Cliff was quickly left trailing behind his more experienced competitors. He didn’t even seem to be running properly — he dragged himself forward slowly, which put him in danger of injury, let alone completing the course. That first night, when all the competitors went to sleep after almost 18-hour running, he just put his head down and continued his slow plodding throughout the night and into the early morning. All the audience were more certain of his failure.
However, according to Cliff, it was all part of his plan. He intended to run constantly, refusing to stop for sleep. Cilff shuffled on and on, as if there were countless sheep waiting for him to round up in front. Gradually, he narrowed his gap, getting closer and closer to the front of the pack. By the last night, his unique shuffle wasn’t so funny anymore — it had powered him right through to the first position, and even help him set a new world record. Cliff was crowned the winner, and the whole world cheered with him.

A Viola. B. Antony. C. Sebastian. D. Hamlet.
A. To help relax the audience and attract their interest in the main theme.
B. To make it easy for audience to understand the plays.
C. To make the difficult plots simple.
D. To help develop the main plot.
C
D
12. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the main topic. B. To show the author’s attitude.
C. To describe a situation. D. To analyze causes.
13. The Italian government minister holds the belief that ________.
A. it is normal for adult children to live with their parents.
B. parents should never wash clothes for their children.
C. young people should live on their own after 18.
D. parents should take care of their adult children.
14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the last paragraph
A. American parents are willing to live with their adult children.
B. Some American adult children become a heavy burden to their parents.
C. Most America adults aged 34 are living with their parents.
D. It is widely accepted for adult children to live with their parents in America.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
And from the moment the runners left the starting blocks, it looked like the skeptics (怀疑者) would be proved right.
