We thought we had it all—a beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars, a couple of four-wheelers for entertainment—and we loved it. Then, the market tuned and my husband's job at a construction
company was gone. The company was closing down for good.
We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren't any to be found. With each passing day we were getting increasingly worried and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got, I felt feelings of admiration for my husband that I hadn't felt in years.
That's why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job.
Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, “We have four healthy children and each other. That's what's important. That makes you a rich man. ”“But what if we lose the house They'll hate me—you'll hate me, ”he replied.
I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye.
“No matter where we live I will be happy—as long as I have you.”I smiled again. In all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do”.
I could see his shoulders and neck relaxed. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadn't for quite some time. It was a turning point for us as a couple and a family.
We are still struggling for our better life, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money can't buy and no one can take away from us.

New research suggests that dogs might be able to help save diseased citrus trees.
A group of scientists trained dogs to use their sense of smell to detect a crop disease called citrus-greening. The disease has affected orange, lemon and grapefruit trees in the American states of Florida, California and Texas.
The dogs can detect the disease weeks to years before it appears on tree l eaves and roots, the researchers report. A study on their findings was published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The report says using dogs is also faster, less costly and more exact than having people collect hundreds of leaves for lab analysis.
Timothy Gottwald is a researcher with the U.S. Department of Agriculture an d a cowriter of the study. He told The Associated Press, “This technology is thousands of years old-the dog's nose. We've just trained dog s to hunt new prey.”
Citrus-greening is caused by a bacteria that is spread by a tiny insect that feeds on the leaves and stems of citrus trees. Once a tree is infected(感染), there is no cure. The disease has also hurt citrus crops in Central and South America and Asia. In one experiment involving grapefruit trees in Texas, trained dogs were correct 95 percent of the time in telling the difference be tween newly infected trees and health y ones. “The earlier you detect a disease, the better chance you have at stoppin g an epidemic(流行病)by removing infected trees,” Gottwald said.
Matteo Garbelotto studies plants at th e University of California, Berkeley. He says the new research shows that dogs can detect an infection well before current methods. Garbelotto has been involved in similar research but had no part in the new study.
Laura Sims is a plant scientist with Louisiana Tech University. She praised the steps taken to find out if the dogs w ere detecting the bacteria itself or a plant's reaction to an infection. To do that, the researchers infected different kinds of unrelated plants with the bacteria in a laboratory. The dogs were still able to pick out the infected plants.
Gottwald said, “You've seen dogs working in airports, detecting drugs and explosives. Maybe soon you will see
them working on more farms. ”
28. According to the research, trained dogs can __________.
A. help infected trees recover from diseases B. recognize a crop diseasc in its carly stage
C cause fruit trees to grow faster than usual D. reduce the cost of planting some fruit trees
29. What does the underlined part “new prey” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Infected plants. B. Fruit trees. C. Tiny insects. D. Favourite foods.
30. Why did the researchers do experiments on unrelated plants
A. To further prove the findings. B. To explore the plant diseases.
C. To present different opinions. D. To discover a plant's reactions.
31. How does Cottwald feel about the future use of this new method
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Curious.
D
It's nothing new that you can find many files or services you can download or use from the Internet. The question is: Is downloading legal or not In most cases the answer is negative, because sharing and downloading are illegal. Of course, you can find files for legal downloading, but you have to pay for them.
It seems innocent if you click on the download mark, but it isn't. It should be compared with stealing in a store.
Would you steal a magazine, an MP3 player or a car Downloading from the Internet is a theft und sharing files, once you have stolen them, only makes it worse. For example, if everybody only downloaded, movies wouldn't make money and the studios wouldn't invest millions of dollars to make new ones.
Many people may think it better, easier and cheaper to do downloading. I think, that is the main reason why Internet users prefer sharing something to buying them. In the modern world we love convenience and what could be more convenient than getting music, films and games without having to leave your house You don't need to pay for what you get, there is no registration, and you don't have to wait until shops open or the CD/DVD you want is posted to you. However, you could be in big trouble if you are caught. You could go to prison as a result of acting unlawfully, but so far only a tiny amount of people have been charged for downloading illegally. The majority of people who download illegally, and use the files for their personal use, will not get into trouble. And that's why it's important for people to understand what the long-term consequences are if they don't want to pay for their music, films and TV. Will film and music companies still spend millions of pounds every year if they have no chance of making a profit The answer is plainly “no”.
Finally I would like to say that the Internet offers a lot of services for money, but people will always try to get them for free. To summarize my thoughts I'd like to highlight that illegal downloading is both unfair towards producers and dangerous for those who practise this kind of activity. You have to decide whether to buy or download.
32. Many people download for free from the Internet because
A. they follow others'examples to do such things
B. they don't think they may be charged by the producer
C. they think everything on the Net can be shared by others
D. they think it is legal, convenient and easy
33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A. Downloading helps movies become more popular.
B. Downloading free files is as illegal as stealing.
C. Sharing files on the Internet is dangerous.
D. Sharing files on the Internet can make a profit.
34. What does the underlined word “highlight” in Para 4 mean
A. Stress B. Explain C. Admit D. Deny
35. What is the author's purpose of writing this text
A. He advises readers to download legal files.
B. He asks readers to limit the amount of free downloading.
C. He wants to make it clear that downloading for free is against the law.
D. He tells readers how to avoid being charged for downloading.

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House might not be as well known as the Grand Canyon or the Statue of Liberty. 36 Completed in 1904, the building is stationed directly between Stanstead, Qucbec, and Derby Line, Vermont, with the official US-Canada borderline running right across the library's floor.
Martha Stewart Haskell and her son, Colonel Horace Stewart Haskell, both Canadians, built the building as a
tribute(悼念)to Mrs Haskell's late husband, Carlos. 37
While the library's official cntrance is on the US side of the building, most of the books are on the Canadian side. 38 The Opera House is similarly split, with most of its seats in the US and its stage in Canada. As Atlas Obscura reported, it is often said that the Haskell is the only library in the US with no books, and the only opera house in the
country with no stage.
Passports and other forms of identification aren't required to cross from country to country in the library, though the Haskell's website notes that the border inside the building “is real and it is enforced”. 39 If they don't, they risk possible detention(拘留)and fines.
Even beyond the building's unique position, library director Nancy Rumery told CTV News that Haskell staffers-
Canadian and American alike—consider the institution to be like any other library in the world.
“We're just trying to be the best library we can. 40 ”she said. “These are all our neighbors and we do our very best to help them on their life-long learning journey.”
A. The Haskell is full of mysterious places.
B. The Haskell is divided between the two countries.
C. Visitors have access to a variety of cultural resources.
D. It's undoubtedly one of America's most unique tourist attractions.
B. Our community is made up of people from two different countries
F. Visitors are expected to return to their side of the border after a visit.
G. The family hoped that citizens would use it as a “center for learning and cultural enrichment”.

W: Yes. I'm required to tell a story in English before the lesson begins.
M: Oh, I see. So you want to get to the classroom earlier to make some preparation
W: You're right Why are you coming so early
M: I'm preparing for the math exam.
Text 2
M: Hello! I'd like to make an appointment. A friend of rune recommended Dr. Brown.
W: Dr. Brown can see you on Thursday, the day after tomorrow.
Text 3
M. Do you think you could help me I need someone to pick up my medicine from the store.
W: I wish I could. but I already told Sally that I would pick up her kids from soccer practice. Text 4
W: I had a terrible day yesterday. My car broke down on the way home.
M: Were you able to catch a train home
W: I'd just missed the last one. Fortunately a friend was just passing by.
Text 5
W: Excuse me, could you tell me which bus I could take to get to the Hilton Restaurant
M: I think you can take No. 82 or 229 outside the airport. Just over there.
Text 6
W: Did you have a nice weekend, Charlie
M: Not really. I went camping with my family.
W: That sounds fun!
M: It wasn't. Camping is so boring. I didn't have any service on my phone, so I couldn't check Facebook or Twitter the whole weekend!
W: That doesn't sound like a big deal. Didn't you enjoy hiking or swimming with your family
M: Not really. ⑥I enjoyed taking pictures of us fishing, but I couldn't even post them until we got back on Monday.
W: ⑦Hmm…It sounds to me like you need to learn how to enjoy life without sharing every moment on social media.
Text 7
M: Would you consider buying a self-driving car
W: I don't know. I guess I'd have to research a bit more about them before making that decision.
M: It will probably be a while before we are able to buy them, anyway. We might be seeing self-driving trucks on the road pretty soon, though. ⑧Google wants to change the commercial trucking industry. Right now, there are over three million truck drivers in the U. S. , so adding self-driving trucks would likely take away a lot of jobs. But many drivers might still be able to accompany their trucks, and get a full night's sleep in the process.
W: ⑨Truck drivers cause a lot of accidents on the freeway, so I think I'd like to see self-driving trucks. It would make me feel safer on the road.
M: Really I think it might make me feel less safe. A human driver is much more likely to react quickly to something unexpected.

W: How are you doing, Christopher
M: ⑩To be honest, I'm really fed up with work at the moment. I need a break!
W: Are you doing anything this weekend
M: I have to work on Saturday all day! I really hate my job!
W: Are you available on Sunday
M: Yes, that's my only day off until Thursday.
W: OK, well, my friends and I are planning on going to the beach on Sunday. We tend to leave around noon whenever we go anywhere, so you could still sleep in. Do you want to come with us
M: That'd be fantastic! I love lazing around in the sun.
W: Do you like surfing
M: I've actually never tried. Do you have a surfboard
W: We've got a few. I can teach you how to surf on Sunday. It'll be fun!
M: I can't wait! It sounds like we're going to have a great time.

W: How did you become an artist, David
M: I was born and educated in Manchester. My uncle was an art teacher there, and he often took me to art museums in the city. I guess I was influenced by all those artists. By the time I was ten, I knew I wanted to be an artist.
W: Did you like any artist in particular
M: I used to be a big fan of Andy Wells. But when I developed my own style, I then discovered that Tom Jackson spoke most deeply to me.
W: Q-But your style is nothing like Jackson's.
M: I know, but after I studied his work for some time, I learned that his sense of freedom was key. This inspired
me to create my own style.
W: Well, you've certainly succeeded in doing that. What's next for you, David
M: I have been in New York for nearly six years, and I need a change. So I am planning to spend some time in East Asia .
W: Why is that
M: The art scene there is very exciting I will visit Beijing and see taditional Chinese paintings, such as the ones done by Qi Baishi. But I'll go to Japan first and stay there for a month.
W: Have you decided when you will leave
M: Not exactly, but I think I will leave in early November.
Text 10
W: Who doesn't love sitting beside a cosy(舒适的)fire on a cold winter's night Who doesn't love to watch flames curling up a chimney Fire is one of man's greatest friends, but also one of his greatest enemies. Many big fires are caused by carelessness. A lighted cigarette thrown out of a car or train window or a broken bottle lying on dry grass can start a fire. Sometimes, though, a fire can start on its own. Wet hay can begin burning by itself. This is how it happens: the hay starts to rot(腐烂)and begins to give off heat which is trapped inside it Finally, it bursts into flames. That's why farmers cut and store their hay when it's dry.
Fires have destroyed whole cities. In the 17th century, a small fire which began in a baker's shop burnt down nearly every building in London. Moscow was set on fire during the war against Napoleon. This fire continued burning for seven days. ! And, of course, in 64 A. D. Rome burned! Even today, in spite of modern fire-fighting methods, fire causes millions of pounds'worth of damage each year, both in our cities and in the countryside. It has been wisely said that fire is a good servant but a bad master. Which of the following statement is not true?
