At the age of 7, Rudolph Blaze Ingram, also known as “Blaze the Great”, has already broken several records and has become the fastest boy in the country, showing early signs of possibly becoming the next Usain Bolt.
Blaze's father Rudolph Ingram Sr. shared that the little boy started training when he was only 4 years old right after watching the Olympics. Since then, he has shown great athleticism. He clocked 13.48 seconds in his most recent 100-meter dash, breaking the USA track and field records for his age group.
“I feel great, and anyways I trained for it,” said Blaze, who dreams of “getting into the National Football League” someday.
His father has always been involved in his training to prepare for his future, but still lets him be a kid.
“He watched the documentary about Usain Bolt, he has seen a lot of documentaries about those people and he realizes that he was doing the same thing that they were doing at that age. So he could see where this would lead to,” he said.
Blaze has caught the attention of many people, including football players O.J. Howard and Mike Evans from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and basketball star LeBron James. His social media account has more than 500,000 followers. Moreover, when talking about what he has accomplished and will accomplish in the future, his father Rudolph Ingram Sr. said, “This is my baby. I feel he's one in a million. Three days earlier, a super typhoon attacked a coastal country, cutting off all communication with the outside. Thousands of people died in the storm.
Whether the destruction (破坏) caused by extreme weather events can be related to human emissions (排放物) of greenhouse gases is most discussed in climate science. If this relation is established, extreme weather can be the severest result of climate change that threatens a range of human rights, including the rights to life, food, health, housing, development and self-determination.
Felix Pretis of the University of Victoria has shown even 1.5 ℃ of global warming will reduce economic growth in some regions, and that the tropics (热带) will feel this impact more than other areas. Some studies predict that the number of heat-related deaths in many parts, South East Asia among them, will be far more than the number of cold-related deaths.
And then there are negative effects of extreme weather events, which have the potential to kill thousands. Myles Allen, a climate modeler at the University of Oxford, has led research into whether specific weather events can be owed to broader climate trends (趋势). He used climate models to model the super typhoon with and without greenhouse gas emissions. The former accurately reproduced the actual events, in terms of the weather patterns, wind speeds and so on. In 15 out of 16 times without industrial emissions, the storm was weaker.
The study shows human emissions are likely to increase wind speeds, which results in a storm move that is 20% higher than it might be in the absence of climate change. It is this move that proves particularly destructive. “It's not true that without human influence this event could never have happened,” Dr Allen said. “But through this study you can see this impact.”
8.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To show the mass destruction of super typhoons.
B.To give an example of the extreme weather event.
C.To introduce discussion on such events and human emissions.
D.To warn people about possible results of climate change.
9.What is mainly expressed in Paragraph 3
A.Studies on harm of climate change are needed.
B.Global warming will damage human rights.
C.Both high and low temperatures are dangerous.
D.Some areas are affected by global warming.
10.How did Myles Allen conduct his experiment
A.By making comparisons.
B.By analyzing examples.
C.By collecting data.
D.By analyzing causes and results.
11.What do the climate models suggest
A.The storm results from greenhouse gas emissions.
B.Human behavior increases the frequency of storms.
C.Wind speeds are determined by industrial emissions.
D.Human influence worsens extreme weather events.
D
Naming hurricanes
New research from the University of Illinois finds that hurricanes with female names are likely to cause more deaths than those with male names. The study examined over 60 years of hurricanes which hit the US. The results showed there were higher death tolls, on average, when the hurricanes were given a female name. This wasn't because female-named hurricanes were more severe but because people's behavior changed.
Sharon Shavitt, one of the authors of the report, explained, “In judging the intensity(强度) of a storm, people appear to be applying their belief about how men and women behave. This makes a female-named hurricane, such as Belle or Candy, seem gentler and less violent.” People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called Candy In fact, hurricanes are named arbitrarily, and the names tell you nothing about the severity of the storm.
But, if people in the path of the storm are letting its name affect whether they take shelter, what we call it may matter more than we think. Having searched through the records, the researchers returned to the lab to test their findings experimentally. People were given a series of hypothetical(假设的) storms with male and female names and asked to make judgments about their intensity and the risk they faced. The results showed that people often regarded male-named hurricanes, like Hurricane Christopher or Hurricane Victor as more intense and riskier than the female-named ones, like Hurricane Alexandra and Hurricane Christ. Shavitt continued, “People imagining a ‘female' hurricane were not as willing to seek shelter. The fixed ideas that underlie these judgments are subtle and not necessarily hostile(敌对的) towards women—they may involve viewing women as warmer and less aggressive than men.”
The fact is that until the late 1970s, hurricanes were always given female names, as they were thought to represent women's qualities like unpredictability. This practice—and the sexist reasoning behind it—was rightly abandoned in favour of choosing between male and female names. Strangely, though, what we've learnt is that we'd be better off naming all hurricanes after men to take advantage of people's fixed views.
The researchers estimate that changing a severe hurricane's name from “Eloise” to “Charles” could potentially cut the death toll by one-third. Perhaps the naming of hurricanes is one specific situation where we shouldn't worry about being sexist, if being a little sexist is going to save lives.
12.Why are hurricanes with female names likely to cause more deaths
A.Because male-named hurricanes are not terrible.
B.Because female-named hurricanes are more severe.
C.Because people prefer to meet the challenge of the male-named hurricanes.
D.Because people think the female-named hurricanes are not severe.
13.What does the underlined word “arbitrarily” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.For humor. B.On purpose.
C.By chance. D.In turn.
14.According to the passage, which name can possibly cut the death toll
A.Eloise. B.Candy.
C.Christina. D.Charles.
15.What can we infer from the passage
A.Future hurricanes will be named after men more often.
B.Being sexist in naming hurricanes helps save lives.
C.Sexism in naming hurricanes will be banned.
D.Rules of naming hurricanes will be changed.

Early one weekend morning, I was sleeping like a log when the telephone rang. When I answered I heard my grandma's voice. “Hey, sweetheart, I have missed you so much lately. Why don't you come to the countryside and enjoy some fine views ” she asked. “Dad, Grandma is inviting us to her home,” I shouted to my father who was busy in the kitchen. “Fine with me,” he responded in a casual tone. After a quick breakfast, we drove to Grandma's.
Once we arrived, we were both thrilled by the breathtaking landscape. The plum trees in the backyard were ripe with fruit, and millions of wildflowers colored the valley. Grandma prepared delicious lunch including her special homemade apple jam, which was my favorite. Seeing my greedy eyes, Grandma said, “Take some when you leave, and I've got plenty stored in the cellar (地窖).” Talking and laughing, we didn't even notice that it was late in the afternoon, though somewhat cooler than it had been that morning. Grandma suggested that we take her homemade wooden boat for a tour along the nearby river.
Seated in the boat, looking up at the sky, I felt like the clouds were greeting us cheerfully from above. In the vast fields, the golden trees were like brides in the sun. The breeze skimmed over the surface of the field, carrying the sweet smell of the flowers. It was like a picture painted by one of the Dutch masters. “It is so nice to spend some quality time with family,” Dad murmured. “It feels like we're on an adventure,” I added. “It's been so much fun!”
While we were admiring the splendid setting around us, the weather started getting hot and humid again. At first, we ignored this change, but when Dad looked up at the sky, he saw dark, low clouds were approaching us. Then a fierce gale (大风) sprang up. Lightning flashed within the black clouds, followed by a roar of thunder. “Row!” Dad shouted, trembling, “A tornado (龙卷风) is coming!”
Paragraph 1:
There was no time to think. We rowed as fast as we could.
Paragraph 2:
Grandma opened the door for us.

根据常见的写作手法可知,文章开头所给的例子一般是为主题服务且引出主题的,再根据第二段第一句“Whether the destruction caused by extreme weather events can be related to human emissions of greenhouse gases is most discussed in climate science.”
根据第二段末句“If this relation is established, extreme weather can be the severest result of climate change that threatens a range of human rights, including the rights to life, food, health, housing, development and self-determination.”

根据第一段中的“This wasn't because female-named hurricanes were more severe but because people's behavior changed.”以及第二段中的“People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called Candy ”可知,女性名字的飓风造成更多死亡不是因为女性名字的飓风更严重,而是因为人们误解了这种飓风的严重程度,认为它不严重,因此导致更多死亡。
根据画线词上文“People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called Candy ”及下文“and the names tell you nothing about the severity of the storm”可知,人们因为飓风的名字是Candy,而对其严重程度产生误解,实际上名字与飓风的严重程度无关。
根据最后一段中的“The researchers estimate that changing a severe hurricane's name from ‘Eloise’ to ‘Charles’ could potentially cut the death toll by one-third.”
根据最后一段中的“Perhaps the naming of hurricanes is one specific situation where we shouldn't worry about being sexist, if being a little sexist is going to save lives.”

One possible version:
Dear John,
I'm delighted to receive your letter, in which you expressed eagerness for some information about the Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Campaign held in our school. I'm glad to share it with you.
As scheduled, the activity took place last Friday. First, all the teachers and students attended a lecture to get a good knowledge of earthquakes. During the lecture, the lecturer impressed on us the damage an earthquake can cause and how to protect ourselves when an earthquake happens through videos and pictures. After that, an earthquake prevention drill was conducted.
I've learned a lot from this activity. It is of great significance for us to master some self-help measures.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
There was no time to think. We rowed as fast as we could. Although I didn't dare to look,I could feel the tornado getting closer as hail started to fall, hitting the creaky old boat hard. Chased by the relentless nightmare, I couldn't afford to let up for a moment. I didn't even wipe the sweat away as it streamed in my eyes and blurred my view. Finally Grandma's house appeared before my eyes. We jumped out of the boat and ran towards it. Gasping for breath, we rang the doorbell again and again.
Paragraph 2:
Grandma opened the door for us.We dripped water on her floor as we went inside, our shoes and clothes soaked through. Grandma said we needed to find a safer place to ride out the tornado, and we followed her into the cellar. Dad helped close off the entrance while I huddled in the dark corner, shivering with cold and fear. We stayed down there, waiting for the tornado to pass over us. We didn't wait very long, for it was over in a matter of minutes. However, after this experience, I appreciated every day with my family.
