Developing Children’s Persistence(毅力)
One of the most important lessons a child can learn is not to give up when faced with a challenging situation, but instead to continue and overcome it.
Invention education
As the importance of STEM ( science, technology, engineering and mathematics ) subjects continues to grow due to the world’s increasing complexity(复杂性), invention education has become a popular way for children to explore these fields in pleasant ways.
At Camp Invention, there are no “right” or “wrong” ways to complete each day’s set of challenges and activities. Those who take part in it are able to seek solutions that naturally interest them. For example, campers learn how to change their cars to travel across the land, and create basic theory that could help them move through the air and even underwater by using the same method shared by some of the world’s most well-known inventors!
The Innovation(创新) Mindset
Working with our national innovators whose discoveries continue to improve the lives of people everywhere, we have recognized nine basic skills that can benefit children throughout their lives. We call this the Innovation Mindset, and it influences the development of all our education programmes.
Persistence is a very important part of the Innovation Mindset because it teaches children to recover from setbacks and overcome difficulties to reach their goals. Because our programmes develop determination through a “create, test and retest” way of learning, students build the strength and confidence to take on any challenges that stand in their way.

Parents often think that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That’s usually the case because parents feel that could help their children go to top colleges. However, Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.
Their 14-year-old son, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world’s top IQ club. He completed his high school, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees all in three years. That’s not all. He also ran two tech companies, founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish, an invasive species.
But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected “Young Sheldon” before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. “But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he’s just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things,” said Melissa.
Mark and Melissa got to know about their child’s intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast development. Many parents aren’t comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike’s parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. “I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children,” said Melissa.
The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. “We let him order food when he’s 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment,” said Melissa.
Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.
24. What does the underlined word “prodigy” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. A gifted person. B. A popular student.
C. A wildlife biologist. D. A promising businessman.
25. What can we infer about the child in the show Young Sheldon
A. He likes to make friends. B. He is a well-rounded student.
C. He is a famous child actor. D. He is poor at dealing with people.
26. How did Mark and Melissa discover their child’s high intelligence
A. Through the suggestion from a child psychologist.
B. Through the information provided by his teachers.
C. By taking part in a special educational program.
D. By watching their child’s behavior in preschool.
27. How did Mike’s parents improve his social skills
A. By letting him go to school alone.
B. By placing him in social situations.
C. By encouraging him to speak in class.
D. By teaching him some communication rules.
C
A good vegan milk (纯素奶) needs to look like milk and taste like milk, whether it contains fat or not. Vegan milk is only one example in the growing types of plant-based alternatives (替代品) to animal products, such as meat, cheese, eggs and fish. Burger King and McDonald’s sell vegan pies. Last year the world’s largest producer of canned tuna, Thai Union, began to sell a plant-based product. Growing sales show the growing taste for this type of food, which means alternative proteins have come a long way since 1980s.
Producing techniques have been improved, resulting in better products and lower prices of them, which meet the needs of a growing number of people. Some vegetarians say no to meat, but yes to fish. Some people are trying to cut fat for health reasons. Fitness lovers want to develop muscular mass and strength without building up fat. Concerns about animal rights and greenhouse gas from raising livestock (家畜) are driving the environmentalists to limit their intake of animal-based proteins. As is reported, producing a gram of beef gives off 25 times the amount of greenhouse gas as producing a gram of tofu.
However, plant-based proteins are a tough sell in giant markets like India, where diets are already plant-rich, or Nigeria, where meat-eating is a sign of being rich. That limits their global popularity. What’s more, animal products, including milk and meat, are better for children’s bone development, though lab-grown meat and dairy are becoming more nutritious.
All this suggests that alternative proteins have far to go to replace the animal kind. Plant-based foods may no longer be only a side dish in diets, but their makers’ place as the main dish is another matter.
28. Why does the author mention vegan milk in the first paragraph
A. To encourage a healthy diet.
B. To show people’s growing taste.
C. To stress the importance of milk.
D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
29. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2
A. Ways to meet the needs of people.
B. Benefits of animal-based products.
C. Results of improved producing techniques.
D. Reasons for choosing plant-based products.
30. Why are plant-based products unpopular in India
A. Indian Diets are rich in plant.
B. Eating meat means being rich.
C. Plant-based products are produced in labs.
D. Plant-based products are bad for children.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards plant-based proteins
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Unclear.
D
Sixteen miles off the coast of northern Scotland, the future of green energy is taking shape. The five giant turbines (涡轮机) of the Hywind Scotland wind farm look much like any other off-shore wind project, except one major difference — they’re floating.
While traditional offshore turbines sit on metal and concrete towers fixed into the seabed, Hywind’s turbines rest on floating frames that move up and down with the waves. It proves to be an important development as the world struggles to meet the net zero carbon emission (排放) targets set in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
To cut those emissions, green electricity will need to be at the main source of global energy, according to the International Energy Agency. It says that by 2040, half of the world’s energy needs will have to be met by electricity produced in a net zero way. Projects like Hywind’s floating wind farm offer a picture of what the future could look like.
The reasons for this can be listed as follows. Firstly, unlike fixed units, floating turbines can operate in deep waters far from the shoreline, where winds tend to be stronger. Secondly, it can serve offshore areas that are too deep for bottom-fixed turbines. “In places like Korea, Japan and California, you can only manage a certain amount of offshore wind, or maybe even none at all, so floating turbines are the only option in the longer term,” explains Henrik Steisdal, a Danish inventor at the forefront of floating wind innovation.
While floating turbines overcome some of the problems that make offshore wind farms in deep waters impossible, there are still challenges that have to be overcome. There are some concerns about what effect floating wind turbines might have on the sea environment. The price of floating wind projects is also still high — almost twice as much as that of the bottom-fixed offshore ones. Another problem is how to avoid the risk of a system breakdown when the wind is blowing too hard.
32. What do the Hywind’s turbines and the traditional turbines have in common
A. They are fixed. B. They use wind.
C. They are floating. D. They use waves.
33. What’s NOT the reason for building floating turbines
A. It offers a picture of the future.
B. Winds are stronger in deep waters.
C. It helps meet the net zero carbon emission targets.
D. It is difficult to fix turbines in deep offshore areas.
34. What will possibly be talked about in the following paragraph
A. Solutions to the problems.
B. Functions of the wind power.
C. Advantages of the floating project.
D. Opinions on the floating turbines.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Wind Projects — a Greener World
B. Wind Projects — a Practical Solution
C. Floating Turbines — a Choice for the Future
D. Floating Turbines — a More Efficient World

Are you nervous when sitting in the exam hall Do worrying thoughts keep you awake at night You may have experienced at least one of these situations. 36 There are many ways to help reduce this uncomfortable feeling. Here are three simple techniques that could make a difference.
37
Do you jump out of bed the moment the alarm rings every morning Or do you check your phone the moment your eyes are open
Perhaps the next time you get up in the morning, you can try this. Slowly get up and sit at your bed for a few minutes. 38 You can shut your eyes if you feel that helps. The important thing is not to let any hurried thoughts fill your mind. Just be present, with no thoughts of the past or future. In these few quiet minutes to yourself, you will feel refreshed!
Eat mindfully
Meals today seem to be in the company of more than just knives and forks. In many cases, we have our headphones right next to the served food, and our eyes are busy with the world within them. Such actions can result in a stomachache and overworked brain.
39 Slow down and let your eyes focus on the different colors, and allow your tongue to taste different flavors. Chew the food well, and feel the sensations. This is called mindful eating. It helps you to be aware of the food you put in your mouth.
Get moving
Do you often lock yourself in your room, finishing up your school work or playing video games 40 Playing sports or simply cycling helps reduce the body’s stress and lift your mood. It has long been studied by scientists that even five minutes of exercise can have anti-anxiety effects!
These are three simple ways to feel less anxious and stressed. You would need to maintain these practices, of course. However, when you see the improvements in your mental well-being, it’s worth the efforts. Give them a try. Your mind will thank you for it.
A. Sit at your bed
B. Live in the present
C. Let the body and mind feel the peace.
D. Instead, take mealtime as a time to enjoy your food.
E. Then it is time to get out of the chair and have some fun.
F. This, in turn, has the effect of bringing your body into a state of deep relaxation.
G. It is a sign that anxiety is growing in your body, and your brain is asking for help!

8 November
Dear Diary,
Nowadays, we live in a society where being thin is seen as being beautiful. In order to keep a slim figure, many teenagers skip meals on a regular basis. I feel deeply worried about this phenomenon.
In my opinion, skipping meals is harmful to our physical and mental health. If we can’t take in enough nutrition, we will feel weak and get ill easily. What’s worse, we may have trouble concentrating and it will have a negative influence on our study. On the other hand, beauty comes from within. With confidence and a positive attitude towards life, we are the most beautiful in the world, regardless of our body shape.
Hopefully, we teenagers can keep a balanced diet and live healthily.

M: Yep, she sure was special. Say, weren’t you and your husband talking about trying to start a garden in your backyard
W: Yeah, but it’s been... talk! We don’t really know where to start. Maybe we should wait until next year.
M: Nonsense! There are plenty of things you can plant in late fall. I’ve got a bunch of seeds inside. Why don’t you take some home
W: Oh, I don’t want to trouble you.
M: No, it’s my pleasure, really! I don’t have enough room here for everything.
10.【原文】Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Alice Brown. As you know, we hold a series of events during the school year on various cultural topics. I am happy there’s such a large crowd of both students and professors here at our city art presentation this year. I see that almost every seat is taken. Tonight, we are lucky to have as our guest, a man of considerable fame in the world of music. He began to play the piano at the age of 5, and by the time he was 10, he was already composing and playing his own pieces. He’s a graduate of the famous Julliard School in New York City. Our guest has spent the last 45 years of his very successful career touring the world and giving concerts. We are fortunate to have him here to share some of his experiences with us. He has had many adventures along the way - losing instruments, missing flight connections, no hotel reservations, locked concert balls. He’s played for all of the well-known conductors, not only in North America but all over the world as well. The title of his talk is 40 Years on 4 Continents. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Daniel Robinson, one of the greatest pianists of our day.
