Many people often spend hours watching videos on their phones before sleep, with the lights off. However, did you know that using your phone in the dark is not a very good idea The screen of your phone sends out blue light, which is quite harmful to your eyes. It can also be hard for you to go asleep.
What is blue light Blue light is everywhere. It is sent out both by artificial(人造的) light and by our biggest light—the sun! Blue light is the part of visible light which has the second shortest wavelength(波长). Light with shorter wavelengths have greater power. The strong energy of blue light allows it to pass easily through the cornea(角膜) of our eyes. So blue light is quite harmful to our eyes.
However, blue light isn’t all that bad. After all, it is a part of sunlight. In fact, it can help to improve our sleep. The problem, however, lies in the bright screen lights we stare at each night. In other words, the problem isn’t exactly the exposure(暴露) to blue light, but the timing of our exposure to it.
Some scientists studied the difference between reading a paper book and an e-book before bedtime. They found that it took longer for people who used an e-reader to fall asleep. These people were also less smart in the following morning.
So, to protect the quality of your sleep, avoid screens an hour or two before your bedtime. If you must use your phone before going to bed, keep a night lamp(灯) on.

Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know
well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor
(味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions’ great taste, they are
very good for you. They have special Chemicals(化学物质) that improve your ability to fight off sickness and you have fewer chances of getting an illness.
No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut into an onion, irritating(刺激性的) chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.
Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions:
●Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes.
●Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes.
●Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes.
If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don’t worry. Scientists think if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion’s chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears “happy tears”.

第二节(共5小题,每小题1分,满分5分)

Close friends, think alike
“What! You, too I believed I was the only one.” Have you ever said something like this to someone
36
It seems that similarity(相似) often helps form friendship. The Greek thinker Aristotle once said, “People regard friendship as a matter of similarity; they say that we love those who are like ourselves.”
37 Scientists from University of California said friends have similar behaviors(行为), Scientific American reported.
The scientists invited 42 university students to take part in a test. Each student watched the same set of videos, which included a comedy, a discussion and a soccer match. 38 According to their scans(扫描), friends who watched the same video reacted(反应) in similar ways. Similar parts of their brains lighted up while watching the videos, especially parts that are connected with motivation(动机), learning and memory. 39
“Seeing one’s friends have similar behaviors will reinforce(强化) one’s own values, opinions, and interests,” lead scientist Carolyn Parkinson told Business Insider. 40 Scientists from the University of Leipzig, Germany, found that friendship is also based on how physically close you are to someone. The scientists did a test with first-year college students the first time they met in class. In this test, students who sat in neighboring seats were more likely to become friends.
At the same time, scientists scanned their brains and recorded their brain activity. Now, there is some science behind this idea. If so, you may have ended up becoming friends with this person. Friends share a lot of similarities, though there are some differences. But brain similarity is not the only thing that can result in friendship. However, people who weren’t friends had different reactions to the same videos.
