Work Out and Keep Healthy
Dear schoolmates,
On behalf of the Students’ Union, I am writing to call for your active participation in a campaign to promote
physical exercise and health on our campus.
First of all, let’s take a look at the current physical condition of our students. With the rapid development of
technology, more students spend a lot of time on electronic devices, leading to a “face-down” lifestyle. As a result,
they are suffering from health problems such as obesity, poor eyesight, and weak immune system. As the saying
goes, “A healthy body is the foundation of a successful life”. According to the experts, exercises can not only
strengthen our physical health, but also improve our mental well-being. Moreover, it can also help us concentrate
better in class and improve our academic performance.
Let’s take the initiative to exercise and keep ourselves healthy. Together, we can make our campus a vibrant
and energetic place.

The four of them stood together around the picnic table, watching me. As I ate my second piece, my
hands felt sticky, and my face felt wet all over. Soon afterwards, my belly started to feel full, but the watermelon
tasted so good—I just couldn’t stop eating it. Just hesitating for a few seconds, I decided to bite into my third piece.
Then, it was totally out of control. I kept eating one after another, and the little mound of black seeds on my plate
grew higher. At this point, red juice dribbled from my chin to my shirt. With guilt and shame inside my heart, I
slowly glanced up at my family, just noticing that my sister’s mouth watering and my brother’s eyes locked on the
biggest slice left. Meanwhile, my parents were watching me in amazement as well. I suddenly felt greedy and
realized that I was the only one having fun. “Go ahead,” I said to my family. “Have a piece.”
Mom smiled as if she had known all that I would share. For a second, they hesitated, wearing
unbelievable expressions on their face, eyes looking at one another to be sure. After seeing my assured look, they
stormed the picnic table, each grabbing a piece of giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon. Just at that moment, laughter
filled the whole room, bringing me and my family into a pleasant atmosphere. We ate together, having

Text 10
Some people collect fine paintings, and others collect rare coins. But I collect comics.
5
{#{QQABIQIEggCAABAAARhCEwXgCkKQkAAAACoGwBAAMAIAwBNABCA=}#}
I first began collecting comics when I was about seven years old. (17) I remember my father buying me
one in a hotel in Africa. He told me it was the same comic he used to read when he was a little boy. (18) I
remember reading it that afternoon on a hot and sweaty bus, (17) and I loved every page of it. From then on,
whenever we stopped at town, he would buy me a comic. They were often cartoon-type comics with funny
characters and silly stories. (18) But he would also buy me comics about brave soldiers at war, or pilots of planes.
They were all very exciting and they opened up my imagination.
As I grow older, my taste in comics becomes different. I still love the cartoon and the soldier ones, but I
also begin reading superhero comics too. Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man are my particular favorites, and
I enjoy anything to do with space or time travel.
Today, my love for comics is as strong as ever, (19) even though I am 47! It has to be — I sell them for a
living now! I opened a comic bookstore a few years ago. (20)

You may have heard video game characters deliver lines like “Shatter (击碎) the darkness with
thunder!” But it’s refreshing to hear it in an unexpected place — the classroom. Xia Zhendong is a
physics teacher working at a senior high school in south China. Now in his 30s, Xia has won the hearts
of millions of online viewers with his classroom experiments.
In one video, Xia pointed a self-made “thunderbolt wand (魔杖)” toward a hanging light tube in
his classroom and said, “Shatter the darkness with thunder.” Suddenly, an electric arc (弧线) emerged
from the tip of the wand, illuminating the tube. After the cheers from his students, he went on to explain
the science behind it—static electricity (静电) and point discharge (尖端放电).
“The idea came when I enjoyed playing a popular game on my smart phone,” he said. In his spare
time, he likes to try out what students are interested in to get closer to them. Apart from the “thunderbolt
wand”, Xia has done many other creative experiments. Once, he lit steel wool with a battery to show
the heating effect of electric current. Another time, he used a “laser weapon” to pop balloons while
explaining the principles of lasers.
For Xia, physics is supposed to be fun. So, when he saw his students struggle with physics, he
decided to make a change. “Circuit diagrams (电路图) are abstract, and I want them to actually see
the electricity through lightning to realize that knowledge is not just on paper. You can see it and even
touch it,” Xia said. Now, Xia has also started free live classes online. “I hope that through online classes,
more students can also have access to fun physics lessons. And their parents can also join in. I hope
that physics could make them feel happier,” Xia said.
24. What does the underlined word “illuminating” mean in paragraph 2
A. Shining light on. B. Cutting down on.
C. Getting stuck in. D. Taking advantage of.
25. What inspired Xia Zhendong to have such an idea
A. The effect of acting a video game character. B. Online viewers of his videos.
C. The pleasure in playing an online game . D. Wild cheers from his students.
26. Why does he start free live classes online
A. Because he hopes to get more students to have his classes.
B. Because he wishes to get more parents involved in his lessons.

{#{QQABIQIEggCAABAAARhCEwXgCkKQkAAAACoGwBAAMAIAwBNABCA=}#}
C. Because he expects more students to have fun in learning physics.

A. What makes a fun teacher. B. Bringing magic to school.
C. How to make physics fun. D. Getting students to learn physics.

Every year thousands of tourists flock to China. They come to see the grand sights of the Great
Wall and the Forbidden City, but often it is the hutongs that leave the strongest impression, as they
offer travellers a rare view into Beijing’s past. Hutongs — the many little alleys that connect the
rectangular courtyards of traditional houses — are a feature of ancient Chinese architecture. Beijing’s
hutongs are particularly famous, however, as there are thousands of them. Nowadays, the word “hutong”
has come to mean more than just the alleys that connect the courtyards. It also refers to the courtyards
themselves and even to the communities that live there.
The majority of Beijing’s hutongs were built between the 13th and 19th centuries during the Yuan,
Ming and Qing Dynasties. To help them keep control over the city, the Emperors during these periods
arranged different areas of Beijing in neat blocks of houses built around courtyards. They were then
able to place guards at the entrances of the various hutongs, which made it easier to keep an eye on
people’s movements. The Emperor’s home, the Forbbiden City, was in the center of Beijing and the
homes of the nobles and wealthy citizens were in the hutongs closest to the royal palace. Ordinary
citizens lived in the hutongs further away from the palace.
By connecting people’s homes, the hutongs in fact connected people’s lives, whether the lives of
the rich or the lives of the ordinary citizens. Because the houses were built facing each other around
courtyards, the families who lived there were an important part of each other’s lives. They supported
each other when help was needed and shared the joy and sorrow of everyday life, no doubt sharing
recipes, borrowing mops, and burning fragrant incense together when they pay respect to the ancestors
or Buddhists. Because of the hutongs, courtyards were joined together for miles around creating a
network of people working, playing and living together — a real community.
28. Why do the hutongs impress the foreigners most
A. Because they are unique to the ancient China.
B. Because they are particularly popular with tourists.
C. Because they provide travelers a chance to connect each other.
D. Because they enable travelers to understand Beijing’s history better.
29. What was the purpose of building hutongs
A. To defend against the enemies.
B. To offer the travelers a rare view.
C. To strengthen the emperor’s ruling over the country.
D. To deepen the connection between people in the communities.
30. How were hutongs arranged
A. They were arranged according to ranks of the classes.
B. They were arranged according to people’s life demands.
C. They were arranged according to city’s geographic features.
D. They were arranged according to the closeness among people.
31. What is the author’s intention to write the text
A. To persuade people to travel in Beijing.
4
{#{QQABIQIEggCAABAAARhCEwXgCkKQkAAAACoGwBAAMAIAwBNABCA=}#}
B. To introduce a traditional architecture.
C. To encourage people to live in hutongs.
D. To explain the feature of hutongs.

July 2023 was the world’s warmest month on record, according to the World Meteorological
Organization. As heatwaves had spread across North America, Asia and Europe, UN Secretary —
General Antonio Guterres said in a speech that the planet is entering an “era of global boiling”.
How to cool the planet has long been a troubling question for scientists. They are now turning to
sun-blocking technology, which refers to reflecting sunlight back into space in order to keep down the
temperature of the planet’s climate.
According to Euronews, a European television news network, one idea involves pumping sun-
blocking particles (粒子) into the upper atmosphere. The particles will then stay in the air and redirect
sunshine back upwards. It is like applying sunscreen on the outside of Earth. Researchers at Yale
University, US, outlined a plan to use 125 high-flying planes to spread the particles at latitudes (纬度)
of 60 degrees north and south. The particles will then travel toward the poles, which could possibly
cool the temperature there by 2 ℃. In the future, the planes could be used to refreeze the poles, said
the researchers.
Another very promising technique is called “cloud brightening”, according to Chris Sacca, a US
climate expert. This method involves sending sea salt particles into clouds above the sea, making them
whiter and thus reflect more sunlight back into space.
In June, the US government announced in a report that it is now offering support for solar

However, following the report, an open letter by more than 60 scientists called for caution and
more research first. Kristen Rasmussen, a climate scientist at Colorado State University, US, has been
studying how these sun-blocking methods will affect rainfall patterns. She said that apart from rainfall,
ecosystems and even human communities will also be affected. “We need to be very cautious on this,”
Rasmussen told Scientific American.

Sports is getting its increasing popularity among teens. Many teens in high school want to try
sports because they think it will make them popular. 36 Here are some of them.
With electronic products becoming more popular, it has become much easier for teens to be by
themselves. Kids used to hang out around the town; now they just sit at home. 37 In this case,
they’ll learn how to interact and work as a team — something they’ll find useful later in life.
38 Playing a team sport will help your teens get some exercise to lose weight or get into
shape. What’s more, these days, it is becoming harder to show your teens that you love and support
them. A great way to do this is by showing up while they are playing games. You can also help them
practice, and help with the team fund-raising. These are also great ways to spend time with your kids
and talk to them.
You may think your teens aren’t good enough to make their school team. 39 There are
plenty of other places besides the school to play team sports. You can also check other “for-fun clubs”.
You could look into sports that you may not have thought of. If you do a little research, you are sure
to find something your teens will enjoy.
Sports are a great way for your teens to get out of the house, get moving, make friends, and even
get a scholarship to college. 40
A. Take it easy.
B. Take your chance.
C. Sports help address teens’ overweight.
D. Then how can you develop a hobby of doing sports
E. So why not talk to them about getting into sports today
F. However, there are other benefits your teens don’t realize.
G. Yet getting into a sport gives them a chance to go out and socialize.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I couldn’t stop thinking about watermelons. I’ve saved my money to buy my own. One giant,
juicy, wonderful watermelon all for me. I was going to eat it all up, except for the seed. Dad joked that
if I ate the seeds, a watermelon would grow inside my stomach. Maybe that wouldn’t be so bad. Then
my stomach would be happy all the time!
At the store I looked for the biggest, the juiciest, the most wonderful watermelon. And there it
was, right behind some cantaloupes (甜瓜). They were small and light, not like my giant, juicy,
wonderful watermelon.
I picked up my watermelon and put it on the floor. I rolled it down the aisle. I rolled my treasure
to the checkout line. The grocery clerk lifted my watermelon for the cashier to weigh. Fifteen pounds!
After I paid, the clerk set it back on the floor for me. I rolled it out the door, then along the sidewalk,
three blocks to my house. Sweat dripped from my forehead onto the watermelon.
“Lucy! What are you doing with that watermelon ” Mom asked.
“I saved up my money and bought it at the grocery store. I’m going to eat it all by myself.”
Mom frowned. “You’ll get sick,” she warned.
“Please ” I begged. “I’ve been saving for it.”
Mom thought about it, then smiled as if she knew something. “OK, but only if you eat it outside,”
she said.
I rolled my giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon out the back door to our picnic table. Mom brought
out a knife and some paper plates. My sister followed her. “Ooh, watermelon,” she said. “I want some.”
“Sorry,” I told her, “I’m going to eat it all by myself.”
My sister whined to Mom.
But Mom said, “Your sister bought it herself. She decided what to do with it.”
My brother came out next. He wanted to take a bite as well.
I said loudly, “No way. I’m going to eat it all by myself.”
My brother howled, but Mom again said, “It’s your sister’s watermelon. She decides.”
Mom cut the watermelon into four pieces, then cut each of those in half. Eight pieces in total.
I reached for my first piece and took a bite. Red juice ran down my chin.
My father came out. “Oh, watermelon!” he said, seeing it.
“Don’t even ask,” said my brother. “She won’t share,” my sister added.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
