I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston’s news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR’s news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation-whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I’ve felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status (地位), and even language. It’s the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain any one - help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10, and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.
24. How did the author feel in the early years of school
A. Curious. B. Unfree. C. Loose. D. Impatient.
25. What do we know about the author’s job at WBUR
A. He did it for his father. B. He did it against his will.
C. He risked his neck doing it. D. He took to it like a duck to water.
26. What does the circus probably mean to the author
A. A means of living. B. A chance to go anywhere.
C. A part of his identity. D. A way to forget his troubles.
27. Why does the author write the text
A. To express his love for circus performances.
B. To stress the value of performing.
C. To share his childhood experiences in a circus.
D. To discuss the problem of choosing a job.
C
Some people claim they “never forget a face.” But what does that saying mean Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember
A new study has found that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces.
That number comes from a group of researchers at the University of York in England. They published their findings on facial recognition this month in the Proceedings of The Royal Society B, Biological Sciences.
There have been many studies recently on facial recognition technology. But the authors of this study say theirs is the first time that scientists have been able to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces.
Facial recognition technology is used to screen people before they visit the Statue o f Liberty in New York, US. Jenkins said the ability to tell individual people apart is “clearly important.”
Scientists have been working on computer technology to remember and identify faces since the 1960s. Today, facial recognition technology is used in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and violence. Governments use it to keep secret areas secure and, in extreme cases, control populations. Some governments use the software to watch people and find out where they go and what they do.
People who took part in the study were also shown thousands of photographs of famous people. Researchers asked them which ones they recognized. To make sure they knew these people, researchers required them to recognize two different photos of each famous person. The results showed that the participants knew between 1,000 and10,000 faces.
Jenkins said one explanation may be that some people have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information.” he said.
Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. So, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
28. Which one is the function of facial recognition technology
A. Stopping crimes happening .
B. Monitoring people in secret areas.
C. Controlling populations frequently.
D. Screening people after visiting places of interest.
29. What’s the reason for participants to know a wide range between 1,000 and10.000 faces
A. They were given different photographs.
B. They are living in different surroundings.
C. Whether they are familiar with famous people.
D. They have different talents for remembering faces.
30. What can we know according to the passage
A. Facial recognition technology has been developed recently.
B. Participants are required to pay full attention during the research.
C. It is possible for some people to remember all the faces they meet.
D. It’s the first time to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. A new research was published.
B. People’s recognition of faces is amazing.
C. People can remember famous people easily.
D. Modern technology helps people remember faces.

As the school Halloween party was just around the corner, the school hall was full of children dressed in different shapes and colors of spooks (鬼) and wonder. Some walked in as princes and princesses, some stepped in as vampires (吸血鬼) and superheroes and some made dramatic entrances as astronauts and historical figures. But one little girl walked in, hiding her face and hoping nobody would take notice of her grey pants and white T-shirt.
Ellie wanted to dress up as a princess that year. Her dad had assured her a few months earlier that her costume would turn a lot of heads. But, as you know, sometimes dads are too busy with their work to forget the small important things while dealing with the big important ones. When Ellie’s dad forgot to save up for her princess costume for the school Halloween party that year, she wasn’t mad at him. However, she couldn’t hold her tears back when the mean kids from her class started making fun of her.
“What are you supposed to be dressed as Ugly Ellie ” one of the boys laughed quietly. Ellie covered her ears and cried as she heard the kids crying out her latest nickname and laughing naughtily over and over again. Every face around her was unkind and indifferent to her sadness.
Mr. Borges was her favourite art teacher and Ellie liked his classes very much. He would listen to Ellie’s deepest fears and biggest dreams. Ellie lived with her grandmother, but it was Mr. Borges who took the place of her father as her guardian, because her father was too busy with his work.
Just as the boys were making fun of Ellie, Mr. Borges came up to her. He was trying to tell her something. The girl wiped her tears right away and managed to escape the crowd of children, closely following him.
“Wait here!” Mr. Borges said and walked into the supply closet (贮藏室). A moment later, he returned, with a few rolls of toilet paper in his hand. Ellie couldn’t help but wonder why the man was holding a few rolls of toilet paper.

第二节
写作思路点拨:根据续写第一段所给提示句“‘What's that for ’Ellie asked.(‘那是干什么的 ’Ellie问道。)”
根据续写第二段所给提示句“What Mr. Borges did meant everything to Ellie, especially in the field of art. (Mr. Borges 所做的对Ellie来说意味着一切,尤其是在艺术领域。)”可知,第二段可以描写在老师的影响和真心帮助下,Ellie对艺术产生了浓厚的兴趣。考生可以顺着这个思路进行合理想象。比如Mr. Borges对Ellie今后的人生产生什么影响?她是否取得了某种成就?
[参考范文]
“What’s that for ” Ellie asked. “It’s your Halloween costume. It’s going to be the best costume ever!” beamed Mr. Borges with thrill. Surprised and expectant, Ellie stood frozen on the spot with her eyes wide open. “Come over here,” Mr. Borges gestured to the costume and started to wrap toilet paper around her all over. Seeing herself in the mirror, Ellie jumped up and down, clapping her hands joyfully. “I love it! I love it! Mr. Borges. Thank you!” She hugged Mr. Borges and placed a tiny kiss on his cheek.
What Mr. Borges did meant everything to Ellie, especially in the field of art. “Thank you for your kindness,” thanked Ellie, with tears brimming in her eyes. Mr. Borges replied with a big toothy smile and encouraged, “I can see your artistic talent. Why not give it a shot ” Under Mr. Borges’ encouragement, Ellie started to pick up the brush and buried herself in fine art. The little girl that used to be teased by her classmates later became a distinguished artist. Never would Ellie forget that there was a teacher with a heart of gold, who was willing to lend her a hand when she was at rock bottom.
2.范文中,作者使用了丰富且恰当的表达,如stand frozen (呆呆地站着), place a tiny kiss on one’s cheek (在某人的脸颊上轻轻一吻),with tears brimming in one’s eyes (某人眼中充满泪水)等,使得范文语言地道,表达流畅。
最后一句“Never would Ellie forget that there was a teacher with a heart of gold, who was willing to lend her a hand when she was at rock bottom.”
