When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I changed from running for sport to running for amusement as an adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn't until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that came with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.
This is the idea of unplugged (不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout — or at least your enjoyment of running.
“People used to have an interest in their sport and get enjoyment out of the sport, but now that's switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And in the end we know that makes them feel bad. ”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workouts if the batteries on their tracking devices are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Some professionals also have had success with leaving their watches at home. Welsh runner Steve Jones famously set a world record at the 1984 Chicago Marathon without wearing a watch. More recently, Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch.
“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”
24. What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work
A. He lost the desire to keep running every day.
B. He experienced running as a really fun activity.
C. He was at a loss how to replace the watch battery.
D. He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.
25. What does Eoin Whelan say about fitness tracking watches
A. They can enrich the wearers’ social life. B. The data provided by them is unreliable.
C. The way people use them is proper. D. They can lead to harmful consequences.
26. Why does the author mention Trevor Hofbauer in paragraph 5
A. To show the popularity of running watch-free.
B. To encourage people to become professional runners.
C. To prove the positive effects of running watch-free.
D. To present professionals’ views on running watch-free.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. It's time to take off your running watch.
B. Unplugged running actually has two sides.
C. Comparing with others should be avoided.
D. Racing for personal bests requires simplicity.
C
China has built in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, the Germplasm (种质) Bank of Wild Species, a comprehensive national database for the collection and preservation of wildlife germplasm resources. As of the end of 2020, the bank preserved 85, 046 copies of 10, 601 wild plant seeds for protecting wildlife germplasm resources. Preserving dried and frozen seeds, the bank provides technological support for the protection and research, makes use of China's wildlife germplasm resources, and plays a major part in international biodiversity conservation.
The importance of science and technology for biodiversity conservation is increasingly obvious. When remote sensor monitoring was not available, agricultural technicians had no choice but to go for field studies, which could barely meet the need for large-scale, fast and nondestructive monitoring of crop conditions and timely prevention and control of diseases and pests. Nowadays, remote sensor monitoring has been applied in agricultural production in China, allowing agricultural technicians to analyze the movements of insect pests and evaluate plant diseases and insect pests by monitoring remotely the vegetation growth, coverage, surface temperature, humidity and other indicators.
In the Internet era, information technology has made the processing of massive data possible and created wider and more convenient platforms for biodiversity conservation in China, including Chinese Virtual Herbarium, Plant Photo Bank of China, and National Animal Collection Resource Center. The emergence of databases and digital programs in recent years is driving China to turn around its seriously threatened biodiversity.
From the collection and storage of information to the management and analysis of resources, the constantly improving biodiversity information network has realized the exploration and use of massive biodiversity data, providing a solid foundation for China’s biodiversity conservation and research. Biodiversity conservation and science and technology are inextricable. Only by making science and technology a strong support for biodiversity conservation can humankind guard the Earth and build a beautiful world of harmony among all beings on the planet.
28. What can we learn about the bank from paragraph 1
A. Its crisis. B. Its administration. C. Its role. D. Its staff.
29. What do researchers hardly need to do with the help of remote sensor monitoring
A. Evaluate plant diseases and insect pests.
B. Go to fields to control the plant diseases.
C. Analyze the tracks of the pests of plants.
D. Satisfy the need to monitor crop conditions.
30. What does the underlined word “inextricable” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Linked. B. Competitive. C. Inadequate. D. Inessential.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Germplasm Bank of Wild Species Develops Fast
B. Technologies Promote Chinese Biodiversity Protection
C. China Has Made Great Efforts to Process Massive Data
D. Information Technology Contributes Much to Many Fields
D
Living in a city is a well-known risk factor for developing a mental disorder, while living close to nature is largely beneficial for mental health and the brain. A central brain region, the amygdala (大脑杏仁核) involved in stress processing, has been shown to be less activated during stress in people living in rural areas, compared to those who live in cities, hinting at the potential benefits of nature. “But so far the hen-and-egg problem could not be resolved, namely whether nature actually caused the effects in the brain or whether the particular individuals chose to live in rural or urban regions,” says Sonja Sudimac.
To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping street with traffic in Berlin. The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature, suggesting that nature elicits beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress.
“The results support the previously assumed positive relationship between nature and brain health, but this is the first study to prove the causal link. Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions remained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes additional stress,” explains Simone Kühn, head of the group.
The authors show that nature has a positive impact on brain regions involved in stress processing and that it can already be observed after a one-hour walk. This contributes to the understanding of how our physical living environment affects brain and mental health. Even a short exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity, suggesting that a walk in nature could serve as a preventive measure against developing mental health problems and reducing the potentially disadvantageous impact of the city on the brain.
In order to investigate beneficial effects of nature in different populations and age groups, the researchers are currently working on a study examining how a one-hour walk in natural versus urban environments impacts stress in mothers and their babies.
32. What does the hen-and-egg problem mean by Sonja Sudimac
A. Living in rural areas actually affects brain activity.
B. People in cities tend to have a higher risk of mental problems.
C. It’s unnecessary to work out the complex issue of stress and health.
D. It’s hard to clarify the impact of living environment on mental health.
33. How did researchers collect evidence for the study
A. By quoting authoritative experts. B. By interviewing healthy volunteers.
C. By researching on a previous theory. D. By comparing volunteers’ amygdala activities.
34. What contribution did Simone Kühn and his team mainly make
A. Confirming the assumption of nature’s benefits to brain health.
B. Supporting a commonly held view of urban exposure.
C. Revealing the link between age and mental health.
D. Identifying the causes of mental health problems.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Benefits of a regular walk in nature.
B. An appeal for living in urban regions.
C. The focus of the follow-up research.
D. Nature’s positive effects on women and children.

How To Stop Being A People Pleaser
As a recovering people pleaser, I spent much of my life keeping others happy. Breaking this habit meant stepping on a few toes. However, I’ve become a happier person as a result. Here are some tips I used to stop being a people pleaser.
Identify your priorities. Take a moment to think about why you are trying to learn how to stop being a people pleaser. 36 Why do you feel the need to keep them happy Answering these questions will help you set a goal that you can hold yourself accountable to.
Just say “no”. One reason why people pleasers say “yes” to everything is that they fear disappointing others. 37 If you are a people pleaser, you are likely to spend lots of energy trying to control how people feel about you. The best thing you can do is let them feel their feelings. It will feel liberating to free yourself from being responsible for someone else's reaction.
38 Saying “no” is a good way to set better boundaries in your important relationships. All healthy relationships have their own boundaries. If you haven’t set boundaries in your relationships, the odds are that at some point you will end up feeling pressured to do something you don’t want to do.
Accept yourself. Many people pleasers are insecure about who they are. 39 Check out our summary of Brené Brown’s the Gifts of Imperfection to learn how to accept your imperfections and love yourself.
Remember that you cannot please everyone. No matter what you do, there will always be someone who is unhappy with your choices. 40
A. Learn to set healthy boundaries.
B. Don't mix up your boundaries with others’.
C. Who are the people that you feel the need to please
D. Spend some time learning to love yourself for who you are.
E. So why bother trying to please everyone if it isn’t possible
F. But saying “no” is the best way to take care of your own needs.
G. That is why the more you seek security, the less of it you have.

A Four-legged Guardian Angel
Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job with the provincial government, and now our financial situation was grim. In despair, I had finally put the home on the market, and a real estate agent was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in despair, I sat typing up resumes and cover letters. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big, gentle nanny-dog, Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn't help heaving a sigh and went straight back to work. However, I hadn't typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking furiously and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

六、读后续写
One possible version:
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. Then to my horror, I caught sight of Forrest's yellow sleeper. Brigitte was bravely doing her best to keep him afloat by holding on to his sleeper with her mouth. At the same time, she was desperately trying to swim to the shallow end. Only then did I realize that Forrest had somehow opened the door, wandered out and fallen into the pool. In a split second, I dove in, lifted my precious baby out and carried him inside. Hands shaking, I called 911 and we were rushed to the hospital immediately, where the doctor kept him for observation for one night.
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. Back home, once Brigitte saw him, she barked with apparent joy and wouldn't let Forrest out of her sight. In time she settled down, but remained dedicated to Forrest and followed him everywhere, concerned about his safety. Even when Forrest was asleep, Brigitte crammed herself under the crib, keeping a vigil. Our dog was indeed an angel, erasing any despair I might have had about losing our home. A house could always be replaced, but knowing we had each other around was the greatest blessing of all. I was grateful she was part of our lives, who I would never give up.
1.【原文】M: Hi, Helen! Is this your new bike
W: Yes, I bought it only yesterday.
M: It’s cool! May I have a try
W: Of course. Don’t forget to ride on the left.
【原文】W: You look tired and sleepy. Do you have trouble falling asleep
M: No, I had to finish the paper for history class from 9:00 last night to 2:00 in the morning, because I didn’t remember it until I finished watching TV.
【原文】W: I’m disappointed that Everest did not accept our offer.
M: The director over there thought it wasn’t low enough.
W: According to our research, it was generous by market standards.
【原文】W: I’m going to try out some new recipes tonight.
M: Well, remember that the Johnsons are coming over for dinner. You know how much I like your cooking, dear, but maybe you shouldn’t pick tonight of all nights to experiment.
【原文】W: The bus isn’t supposed to arrive at this stop for another 30 minutes. I guess we’ll just have to wait until it comes.
M: Normally I’d agree with you, but I’m only going to the next stop, and I feel like having a walk.
【原文】W: Hello, Louis Catering. What can I do for you
M: Yes, I’m with the Colbert Corporation. We’re having a company party on February 15th next week, and I need to arrange for all the food and drinks.
W: OK. How many people do you expect to take part in the party And will it be an indoor one or outdoor one
M: About 108 employees will be there. In addition, 12 managing staff will also be present. And we’ll hold it indoors in one of our large conference rooms.
W: OK. I see.
【原文】W: What are you going to do in Canada
M: My lab is working together with a research station in Canada so I will work there for a long time.
W: How long will it take
M: Three months, probably. It’ll depend on how everything is going.
W: It’s cold there. You may need some heavy clothes. Oh, this suitcase is probably too small.
M: Don’t worry! I do most of the work in the lab. But I do need a large suitcase. I’ll take a lot of research materials with me.
W: So why don’t we go to the shop to get a larger suitcase
M: OK. Let’s go.
【原文】W: Hi, Dad. Is your classmate still working in the power company

M: OK. You can come to the power company for the practice after that. I can drive you there or you can take a taxi.
W: There is no need to do so. I can walk there.
M: Shall I telephone my classmate to tell him that you will visit him
W: I’m not really a visitor. I plan to communicate with the workers and learn about their company culture.
M: That will be a really good practice experience and you can learn much from it.
W: I can’t agree with you more.
M: Now, you have to prepare for the coming picnic. Enjoy your time.
W: Thank you, Dad!
【原文】M: Welcome. Jenny and I have got lots to tell you.
W: That’s right. This week Westfield Radio runs its annual competition. Last year it was to find the best dancer, and next year it will be the turn of local actors to enter. But this year we’re looking for the best singer in our city.
M: And what are the rules
W: Not many. You need to phone your entry. We don’t accept entries through the Internet or by fax.
M: Right. Well, it’s school holidays this week, so what’s on offer
W: The sports hall will open an hour earlier than usual at 8:00 am and shut later at 10:30 pm instead of nine. The indoor football ground is always popular and has to be booked in advance.
M: But what about the swimming pool
W: Not quite such good news, I’m afraid. It will be open about a week later than planned, but good news now—there will be no charge for swimmers for the first week. It’s the same size as the old one, but it is much better equipped.
M: That’s great.
【原文】M: I started my own company, CyberEdit, when I was a freshman. Most students have to write essays, and I aimed to provide computer editing services for them. During one summer vacation, I worked for an Internet company and in the evening, I spent another four hours working on my website. It’s not easy to develop a business. If you hope to be financially independent, you must do something while you are young and you can work long hours. For a long time, I was editing nearly ten documents a night. I spent fifty hours a week doing this. It was hard. Then I hired my first four employees, and I never edited a single document again. The next year, I turned down my summer job at a big investment bank and spent the vacation expanding CyberEdit. In December, Wired magazine contacted me and asked me to write an article about my life. After the article appeared in March, interested investors began to contact me. In June, one of them decided to invest a large sum of money in the company. So the Wired article brought me over a million dollars in funding! More than anything else, good publicity helps a new business attract investors and customers. Investors came to me, not because I was making money and employing fifty college students, but because they read about it in Wired magazine, and saw it on ABC World News Tonight. My advice to young people who consider starting a company is:Do it now! Don’t delay starting it until you’ve finished school or had some“real-world experience”.
