Paragraph 1:
“Hey!”Hannah turned and saw the girl with the braids jumping off her bike. “Good job,” the girl called to
Hannah, panting.“I thought I almost had you, but I must have missed a trail marker.” “You would have won if it
hadn’t been for your bike chain and getting lost,” Hannah mumbled. The girl was smiling, saying it was all part of

racing. Hannah swallowed hard. The girl’s bike was rusty. No wonder her chain had jumped. Leading her new
bike away after the award ceremony, Hannah felt like crying. She looked around for the girl with the braids and
found her by the water stand.
Paragraph 2:
Looking at the new mountain bike, Hannah made a decision. “I accidentally kicked the sign over,” Hannah
said softly. The girl was quiet. “You know, at the fork in the trail. I tipped the sign,” Hannah said, a little louder.
As she handed over the bike to the shocked girl, Hannah felt the lump in her throat disappear. “Are you sure... ”
the girl asked. Hannah nodded. She was never so sure that she was doing the right thing in her life. The girl was
beaming now, her finger moving along the shiny blue frame. Excited and Earnest, she invited Hannah to race in
Copper Harbor taking place the next weekend. Hannah grinned, “Yes. Let’s see who wins then. Fair and square.”

原文材料录音原文:
Text 1
M: I need to get something for my brother. He’s graduating from high school next week. I can’t believe he’s
already 18!
W: Well, you should get him something special. My sister got me a computer when I went to college.
Text 2
W: How much does the car wash cost
M: The basic wash costs $12 and the special wash costs $15. If you buy a tank of gas, you get $5 off.
W: I’ll take the special wash. Will you clean the seats as well
M: Yes, that’s included in the special wash.
Text 3
W: What are you kids whispering about back there Anything you want to tell the class
M: No, ma’am. I’m sorry. We were trying to pay attention, but I didn’t know what page you were on.
W: Maybe you should move up closer to the front. I’ve written the page numbers on the board.
Text 4
W: Can you take me to the doctor
M: Of course, sweetie. You shouldn’t go to school with such a high fever.
W: I need some painkillers(止痛药), too.
M: OK. Now just close your eyes and relax.
Text 5
W: Did you have a good weekend, Ryan
M: Yeah, I went skydiving with my friends! Can you believe it?I jumped out of an airplane. It was so much fun.
How did you spend your break
W: I just stayed home and watched TV a lot.
Text 6
W: Hi Tim! I’ve been wondering when I’d run into you. Have you been here long
M: I arrived here on Friday. How about you
W: I got here one day earlier than you.
M: But we don’t have to be here till Sunday.
W: Yes, I know, but I want to get my things moved into my room, and just take a look around. So, did you decide
to major in English
M: No, I changed my mind and chose history instead. And you’re doing biology if I remember correctly.
W: Yes, although I couldn’t decide between that and geography to start with.
Text 7
M: Hello, I’m Jack, your new roommate. I’m an architect. So, this is the house.... It’s really beautiful!
W: Yeah. I’m Anne. Nice to meet you.
M: Nice to meet you, too. Your pronunciation is excellent. Where are you from
W: I’m from Oxford.

M: Yeah, but my family is in Bologna, Italy.
W: Oh, Italy is wonderful! My sister is in Italy at the moment. She’s in a university, studying art. She says Italians
are friendly.
M: Ha-ha, I think so. Oh, this is a new hat. It’s a gift for you.
W: Thank you. It’s nice.
M: I’m glad you like it. Can I put my things in my room
Text 8
M: Would you consider buying a self-driving car
W: I don’t know. I guess I’d have to research a bit more about them before making that decision.
M: It will probably be a while before we are able to buy them, anyway. We might be seeing self-driving trucks on
the road pretty soon, though. Google wants to change the commercial trucking industry. Right now, there are
over three million truck drivers in the U.S., so adding self-driving trucks would likely take away a lot of jobs.
But many drivers might still be able to accompany their trucks, and get a full night’s sleep in the process.
W: Truck drivers cause a lot of accidents on the freeway, so I think I’d like to see self-driving trucks. It would
make me feel safer on the road.
M: Really I think it might make me feel less safe. A human driver is much more likely to react quickly to
something unexpected.
Text 9
M: I’m home! Thanks for watching Jessica. She is asleep, I guess.
W: Yes, she went to bed after she took her shower. I think she was pretty tired.
M: So, how did she do while I was gone
W: Oh, she was great. I don’t think I had to repeat myself all day. Every time I asked her to do something, she did
it right away. She was very well behaved.
M: I’m glad to hear that! What did you have for dinner
W: At first, she wanted to get pizza, but she changed her mind after we watched a movie with people eating
Japanese noodles. We had some delivered around seven o’clock.
M: That sounds delicious! Yeah, we cook a lot here, but it’s usually Chinese food. I hope the fifty dollars I left you
was enough.
W: Oh, it was more than enough! I actually have fifteen dollars to give you as change.
M: No, that’s OK. Consider it a tip! So, how much do I owe you for tonight
W: Let’s see… I came over at five o’clock this afternoon, and it’s eleven right now, so that’s sixty altogether.
M: OK, here you are. Thank you so much!
W: Oh, it’s my pleasure! I hope you enjoyed your night out.
M: We just went to a friend’s house for a dinner party. It was really good to see them.
Text 10
M: A new video game that includes a brave cat is popular with cat lovers. Some of them are using the game to
raise money for real cats. The game called “Stray” was released last month. A stray animal is one without a
home. Gamers are playing “Stray” live for audiences to raise money for animal shelters and other cat-connected
organizations. Livestreaming game play for charity is not new. But the quick popularity of “Stray” is a bit
unusual. It was the fourth most watched game on the day it was first shown on Twitch, the video game
streaming site. The game is available on many online game platforms. Steam monitor SteamDB said “Stray”
has been the No.1 purchased game for the past two weeks.“About 80 percent of the game’s creative team are
cat owners and cat lovers,” the game’s producers said. “I certainly hope that maybe some people will be
inspired to help actual stray animals in real life,” said Swann Martin-Raget. He is a game producer of “Stray”.
Jeff Legaspi is a marketing director of Annapurna Interactive, the game’s creator. He said that he hopes the
game will “make more people aware of adopting a pet rather than shopping for a new one”.

B
The Great Library of Alexandria was a marvel of ancient Egypt. Founded during the Hellenistic period, sometime between 324 and 246 BCE, the Library was reportedly an architectural wonder. More importantly, the Library housed a vast collection of works from all across the ancient world and was a major center of scholarship. The Library shouldered the mission of collecting all of the world’s books, and employed numerous methods to acquire (获得) new works. A well-funded acquisitions department searched the book fairs of Rhodes and Athens, buying individual texts or even whole libraries. Ships that landed at the harbor of Alexandria were searched for books to add to the Library’s collection. The Library also employed a number of scholars who produced original works on subjects such as astronomy, mathematics, and physics.
In addition to collecting books and conducting research, the writers and scholars of the Great Library translated texts from around the world into Greek and collected authoritative versions from different translations. Some of the first translations of Biblical (《圣经》中的) texts into Greek may have occurred at the Library in the time of Ptolemy I. Much work was done to compile (编写) and edit authoritative versions of the Homeric myths for which the Greeks are so well known today, and these were only a few of the great works of translation and editing that took place in Alexandria in the Hellenistic period.
It is ironic that the fate of the Great Library—an institution committed to the collection and preservation of knowledge—is hidden in myth and mystery. Many sources say the Library burned down, but the date is uncertain.
It may have burned down more than once, either by accident, or intentionally. Smaller sister institutions may have survived the original library, to be destroyed later.
The Great Library, or some version of it, could have survived for anywhere from 300 to 1,000 years. However it ended, there can be little doubt that the scholarship of The Great Library had a great and lasting impact on history, and the works that were kept, translated, or created there have had a profound influence on our culture even to the present day.
How did they get so many books for the library
By sending the ships to search for books.
By translating Greek books into English.
By searching book fairs around the world.
By writing books related to certain topics.
Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “ironic” in paragraph 3
A. Wonderful. B. Typical. C. Strange. D. Intentional.
According to the last two paragraphs, which is certain to be true about the Great Library
A. It survived for 1,000 years. B. It had a hidden collection of works.
C. It burned down on many occasions. D. It has had a great cultural influence.
What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
To introduce some information about a historic library.
To report the role of great libraries throughout history.
To compare versions of the Great Library’s destruction.
To explain the importance of rebuilding the Great Library.
C
There are many differences in ways of thinking between East and West. Many of them are reflected in daily behaviour. In particular, Chinese people sometimes attach more importance to their appearance and social status than to their inner qualities, while Westerners think the opposite. However, Socrates (Ancient Greek philosopher) and Confucius share significant similarities that are universal.
Both philosophers share several teachings in common; for example, their understanding of the nature of knowledge and their opinions on education. Socrates believed “There is only one good, knowledge; and only one evil, ignorance.” Similarly, Confucius said, “Isn’t it a pleasure to study and practice what you have learned ” But both also acknowledge the limits of knowledge. Socrates said: “All I know is that I know nothing.” Similarly, Confucius said, “When you know a thing, to hold you know it; when you don’t know a thing, to allow you don’t know it-this is knowledge.”
However, there are important differences in their understanding of morality. Confucius believed each person should follow certain regulations according to virtue (德行). Everyone should play their role in a society where people are interdependent in order to achieve harmony in the whole society. For instance, when asked how to govern a country, Confucius stated “An emperor should act like an emperor, a subject should act like a subject.” Socrates, however, places self-knowledge over social knowledge.
Another difference between them is their attitude towards political domination (支配). Confucius believed the best way to govern a country isn’t through legal system, but through virtue. Socrates, by contrast, declared that “nothing is more important than justice”.
Why have East and West developed such different cultural values A widely accepted theory holds that Eastern civilization was an agricultural civilization. Hence the need for a collective society and friendly relations with neighbors was strong. Western civilization, however, was nomadic (游牧的). Their mobility makes them less dependent on society after migration.
In spite of their differences, the two cultures have more in common than differences. The shared concern for moral values in the teachings of Socrates and Confucius also shows us more fundamental similarities between
Eastern and Western cultures in their pursuit of virtuous lives.

You have probably eaten a hot dog, but have you ever spotted a sundog This isn’t your pet dog napping in the sun!
A sundog is a weather event that causes two bright bursts of rainbow colored light to appear on either side of the sun. You would see them around 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. Sundogs can be very beautiful, with a red glow closest to the sun and a white in the center. The scientific name for sundogs is parhelia, which comes from a Greek word meaning “beside the sun.”
Conditions need to be just right for sundogs to appear. Sunlight passes through high clouds that spread out like feathers in front of the sun. These clouds contain flat, six-sided ice crystals (晶体). If the crystal drifts toward the ground, with the larger face facing the Earth, light is refracted (折射). These crystals then separate the light, forming a sundog.
Sundogs can be seen during any season but are most often seen during the winter months when the sun is lower in the sky. You are also more likely to see them early or late in the day, when the sun is near the horizon. Sundogs have been spotted around the world, across North America, Europe, and Asia, at the South Pole and in the far north. Scientists have even predicted what sundogs might look like on other planets.
Throughout history, sundogs have been used to predict weather because they indicate snow or rain on its way. Some people believed that sundogs were a sign of good luck, while others saw them as a warning from God. Shakespeare described sundogs in poems as frightening.
Ready to try out your weather detective skills First, use your hand to block the center of the sun to protect your eyes. Search for clouds in a winter sky and a circle or burst of light around the sun. Be sure to show off your sundog smarts to your friends and family—you’ll be their top dog!

Which of the following conditions is most suitable for observing a sundog

It is important to look after your body to help you to stay well and healthy for as long as you can. However, advice about caring for your body is conflicting and often confusing. 36 Many people abandon any effort to take care of themselves because it’s just too difficult.
37 Common sense tells us that even doing a bit more exercise or getting a bit more sleep, and not eating that second slice of cake, are likely to be helpful. The application of a little science, and quite a lot more common sense, can go a long way towards helping you to work out what’s best for you and your body.
Why should you care about Your Body Caring for your body makes sense. 38
Around the world, there is a growing problem of lifestyle-related diseases. These are diseases that are, effectively, caused by the way we live our lives. Most, if not all of them, are associated with not looking after our bodies. Many are associated with being overweight and not taking enough exercise, or by putting the wrong substances into our bodies. These diseases and conditions include heart conditions, high blood pressure, many forms of cancer etc.. 39 . However, looking after your body will go some way to helping you to live a healthier life, for longer.
There are three very important aspects to looking after your body: getting enough rest and sleep, eating well, and taking exercise. 40 But with practice, you will get better at making sure that you take care of your body.
It can be really hard to know what works the best.
You cannot, of course, avoid every illness or condition.
But if you do that too often, there will be consequences.
However, a closer examination suggests that the situation is not quite that simple.
Knowing what to do, and actually doing it are, of course, quite different things.
However, just because it is puzzling does not mean the effort is not worthwhile.
After all, you only get one body in this life, and you want it to last as long as possible.

A man’s voice came suddenly from the loud speakers: “Participants in the Five-Mile Junior Fat-Tire Race, please gather behind the orange flags.”
Hannah was very excited. First prize was a blue mountain bike. On such a bike, she’d fly through the woods. “Good luck, junior mountain bikers,” the loud-speaker voice came again. “Three, two, one, and go!”
The lead-out was a girl with red braids (辫子). She pedaled off hard down the dirt road. The racers followed
behind.
The girl with red braids made a turn onto a part of single track and gathered speed. Hannah pulled up behind her, who sped up again. Hannah followed close behind her.
Hannah watched for the orange arrows (箭头) marking the course and biked through the muddy fields. At the
edge of the forest, the girl was kneeling ( 跪 ) by her bike. She must have gotten a flat tire. Hannah biked faster. She wiped the sweat from her eyes, breathless. Now Hannah was close enough to see the girl putting the chain on the chain ring.
Hannah felt a jolt of energy as she passed the girl into the woods. Maybe she could win.
In the middle of a small meadow, Hannah looked back. The girl was coming up behind her at a fast speed. Hannah entered the woods again. At a fork (岔口) in the trail, to her left, was the sign with the orange arrow.
When she turned, her foot slipped off the pedal, and she accidentally kicked the sign over.
I need to stop and fix the sign, she thought. The other racers might get lost. But even as she was thinking this, her feet kept moving faster, faster.
