Recite ancient verses, pass on poetic artistry

create a rich literary atmosphere on our campus.
During the event, students gathered to recite classical Chinese poems from various
dynasties. They demonstrated great public speaking skills and offered unique understanding
of their poems, while expressing their deep appreciation for the timeless charm of Chinese
classical poetry.
A student interviewed said that he was deeply impressed by the participants’ skillful
performance. This competition successfully encouraged students to explore the everlasting
beauty and cultural richness of our poetic heritage.
第二节
参考范文:
Paragraph 1: On the eve of Christmas, we set off to deliver the gifts and food. The
children were excitedly talking, though I could sense the disappointment in their voice.
“We’re not going to get our usual presents this year, are we ” Blake asked. “No, Blake,” I
replied, “We're giving these families what they need most, and that’s more important than any
material gift.” Upon our arrival, the family greeted us with gratitude and warmth. They
invited us inside and showed us their humble shelter. The children soon joined in decorating
the tree. It was heartwarming to see how happy my children were.
Paragraph 2: As it grew late, we said our goodbyes to the family. The children handed out
hugs and kisses, and I could tell our visit had touched Blake and Allison. Their eyes were full
of tears that they didn’t let fall. When we arrived home, my children gave me a big hug. A
wave of excitement welled in me. I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment and pride in
my children. This Christmas had taught them the true meaning of kindness and generosity,
and I knew they would carry that lesson with them for years to come.

Students will face the pre-exam anxiety in the exam season. But in a growing tradition, universities and students' unions are making increasingly great efforts to try to deal with stress.
Screaming: This is a tradition for students in the United States. Harvard, Northwestern and Columbia all have lessons of stress bursting screaming. At Northwestern in Illinois, students scream on the Sunday evening before finals week. At Wisconsin, the university headmaster took part in the screaming and social media even invited people to join in.
Puppies: Partnering with a local guide dog charity in the UK, the University of Central Lancashire has a "puppy room" for stressed students. Students made a reservation in advance and were given 10 minutes to 15 minutes to play with the dogs, in exchange for a 1.50 minimum donation to the charity. “We are delighted to raise awareness of the Guide Dogs charity as well as to help students through a stressful period.” said a students’ union representative.
Sleep contest: Even sleeping has to be competitive in South Korea. At Duksung Women's University in Seoul, students are dealing with exam stress by a competition to see which students can fall into the deepest sleep. They have blankets, pillows and eye masks, in an event sending the message that getting a good night's sleep is an important part of relaxing.
Small pigs: Students at the University of Exeter in the UK are being offered small pigs to help ease their exam fears. A small pig helps those who lack academic confidence. The student newspaper promises that students will be very excited while playing with pigs.
21. If a parent faces anxiety, which of the following activities he can participate in

C. Taking part in a sleep contest D. Playing with small pigs

I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston’s news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR’s news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation — whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I’ve felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status (地位), and even language. It’s the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone — help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10, and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.
24. How did the author feel in the early years of school
A. Curious. B. Unfree. C. Loose. D. Impatient.
25. What do we know about the author’s job at WBUR
A. He did it for his father. B. He did it against his will.
C. He risked his neck doing it. D. He took to it like a duck to water.
26. What does the circus probably mean to the author
A. A means of living. B. A chance to go anywhere.
C. A part of his identity. D. A way to forget his troubles.
27. Why does the author write the text
A. To express his love for circus performances.
B. To stress the value of performing.
C. To share his personal experiences in a circus.
D. To discuss the problem of choosing a job.
C
Poaching(偷猎) is a major cause of decline for elephants, with a total decrease to about 415,000, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The research team found that poaching occurred more frequently in Central Africa and near the Mozambique-Tanzania border. In recent years, Garamba National Park, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, saw more than 860 elephants die at the hands of poachers, and Selous Game Reserve, in Tanzania, more than 750. Researchers discovered that the household wealth of those surrounding areas was relatively low and they hold a mid-level health.
Researchers said, “Illegal killings are driven by criminal networks who recruit poachers rather than by opportunistic hunters. When a lot of Africa’s national parks were established, people were often forced to be evicted from the land that was now designated a protected area. Local people who had been lived on hunting suddenly became described as poachers.”
“People living within about five miles of wildlife protected area in Tanzania also reported losing up to half their income. A local survey showed the destruction of their crops by elephants and killings of their livestock by lions. Someone added, “If you’re closest to the park, you really do suffer more cost than benefit of the protected area.”
Researchers also noted, “When local communities enjoy the benefits of conservation, it will reduce incentives(诱因) to poach. When governments ensure that local communities are not subject to carrying the burden of the costs associated with this wildlife, they will have more access to income-generating opportunities that can help to lift communities out of poverty.”
Conservationists have to think creatively, carrying out strategies such as reducing demand in ivory-consuming countries, improving educational standards and medical facilities, and increasing support for wildlife rangers. “When we are looking to protect wildlife, we can’t do that without thinking about the well-being of people,” researchers said.
28. What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 imply
A. Elephants mainly appear in Africa.
B. Poachers have found the track of elephants.
C. Elephants living in the protected area are facing a decline.
D. Hundreds of elephants in Africa die at the hands of poachers.
29. What does the underlined phrase “be evicted from” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Leave. B. Return. C. Wander. D. Seek.
30. Which of the following statement is NOT true about poaching

Acting as an art form has changed a great deal over the centuries. It ' s no longer just about entertaining an audience in a stylised way to depict (刻画) characters and events that everyone is familiar with. Nowadays, acting has moved into a world of hyper realism. Audiences often expect to be challenged by a performance, and acting asks sometimes difficult questions about the world around us.
Given this change in emphasis , what kind of toll (损害) might acting take on somebody’s well-being The idea that there is a psychological price to pay for good acting is nothing new, yet there is surprisingly little scientific research that examines the issue. Many scientists have been unwilling to examine the relationship in depth. This is changing, however, with academics now starting to investigate it further.
Actors often agree that performing can come with risks. Deborah Margolin , an award-winning actor, found the line between her stage self and her real personality started to blur(变模糊)the deeper into the character she went. She felt a real emotional impact especially when she played difficult or unpleasant roles. Margolin explains," It was depressing ... my character would cry, and I would cry." She recalls the impact on her fellow actors:" Everybody backed away from me. These were lovely people---I loved them dearly---but my character was unattractive and somehow, so was I."
These feelings are easy to understand, and would seem to be a natural outcome of acting styles such as " method acting ", which encourages actors to use their real-life experiences to fuel a role. There are some, however, who disagree. Actor Sanford Meisner felt that an actor’s most important tool is their imagination and that psychology has no place in performance. In fact, many performers mix these different methods and keep in touch with family to reconnect with the person beyond their character .
There’s no doubt that walking a tightrope between personalities can be a difficult task, however. As drama student Naomi Lorrain explains," It can be hard. Offstage, you have to remember that it’s unreal and onstage you have to forget ..."

With our lives becoming increasingly busy and stressful, it’s easy to forget to check in on our mental well-being and to neglect our emotional health needs. So cultivating “self-compassion” is very important. 36
We’re humans, not machines, and can’t be completely together all the time. 37 This helps us recognise the early warning signs that something is wrong like tearfulness and feeling overwhelmed.
We can then take action to improve our mental balance, which in turn can help us better cope with the challenges life throws at us.
Doing just one small positive thing each day can make a big difference and be enough to restore a sense of balance. 38 Or going for a walk in the fresh air and feeling the warmth of the sun. Or walking the dog.
Changing the way we tackle negative thinking also helps a lot. One technique is to stick to the facts about a particular situation rather than listening to negative thoughts and anxieties. So we can ask questions like: Is this true 39 Does this thinking benefit me or hinder me Could I see it another way
40 When we struggle to get to sleep, our minds can start to fill with anxious thoughts that make it even harder to doze off. Having a cool environment, not drinking caffeine past midday or banning mobile phones from the bedroom could be the changes you need.

“Is this all I got ” my daughter, Allison, asked. “I asked for a new cellphone and a laptop! ”
My son, Blake, joined in, asking, “Where are the rest of the presents I wanted a set of golf clubs and a skateboard! ”
My children, Allison and Blake, were filled with disappointment on Christmas morning. They expected fancy presents, but money had been tight since their father passed away. As a single parent, I was doing my best to provide for them, but I could no longer afford our previous lifestyle. I knew we had spoiled them, but I never realized it was this bad. Their reactions shocked and hurt me, but I tried not to show it. “Next year, we'll be celebrating Christmas differently!” I told them firmly.
Over the following months, I planned our next Christmas celebration. I found a family in need, living on a farm about an hour away. The father had lost his job, and they were struggling to make ends meet.
As Christmas approached, we carried out our usual traditions of decorating the tree, baking cookies, and singing carols. Yet, there were no gifts under our tree. My children grew curious and asked where the presents were. Then I explained that we would be giving gifts to a family that truly needed them. They needed to see what it was like to need essentials such as clothing and food.
We went shopping to purchase essential items like coats, hats, gloves, socks, and shoes for the family. We also selected age-appropriate toys for their children. Next, we headed to the grocery store and filled our carts with everything they would need for a delicious Christmas dinner. We even bought extra items to help them through the winter.
Blake and Allison didn't seem thrilled by the situation, but I hoped they were reflecting on their attitudes from the previous Christmas. I had a couple of gifts hidden in my closet, ready to reward them if they showed respect and kindness.
