Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for living. One night, I took a fare(出租车乘客) at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, standing on the sideway was a small woman in her 80's with a big suitcase.
After I helped her into the taxi, she gave me an address and asked,“ Could you drive through downtown ” “It is not the shortest way,” I answered quickly. “I don’t mind.” She said, “I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice(临终安养院).”I looked in the rear- view mirror(后视镜). Her eyes were wet. I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).“What route would you like me to take ” I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newly married. She had me stop in front of a shabby house, where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she asked me to slow in front of a particular building and sat-staring into the darkness, say nothing. At last, she said, “I'm tired. Let's go now .”
We drove in silence to the destination. It was a grey low building.
“How much do I owe you ” She asked, reaching into her purse. “Nothing.” I said. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly and whispered a “Thank you” .I squeezed her hand and walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade,” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy(等级) of responsibilities and unionαatonal love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old. said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don't pay for your wedding. Best friends don't remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don't tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn't mean that the mother and daughter relationship can't be very close and satisfying.
While some adult relationships are still troubled, many find them to be extremely rewarding. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of the workforce and technology, which may bring them even closer together.
Best friends may' or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse. the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren't speaking. The mother and child relationship is closer than any other. There is not an equal relationship. Daughters should not feel responsible for their mother's emotional well-being. It isn't that they don't care deeply about their mothers. It's just that they shouldn't be burdened with their mother's well-being.
The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. Mothers always “trump(胜过)”friends.
29. What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph l probably mean
A. differ B. prevent C. benefit D. change
30. What do we know from the text
A、The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend.
B. A mother's love brings her and her daughter a close friendship.
C. The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friends' friendship.
D. Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother.
81. How does the author mainly prove his statements
A. By listing data. B. By giving explanations.
C. By quoting sayings. D. By giving examples.
32. What is the best title for the text
A. How to Be a Good Mother and Daughter B. Who Is a Mother's Best Friend
C. Mothers or Friends D. Can a Mother Be a Daughter’s Best Friend

A few years ago, I was working in a grocery store(食品杂货店) . As there were too many customers during the Christmas holidays, I was not used to the management nor the customers there. As I was checking groceries that morning, an elderly man in a wheelchair came through my check stand with a basket filled with candies, soft drinks and other small things. As I finished ringing up his goods, I told the man how much he should pay. He presented an out-of-state cheque(支票) from his son. He explained to me that his son had sent him the cheque for his Christmas present and he wanted to use it to buy gifts for the friends and wonderful workers at the nursing home where he lived, which was a few blocks behind the store. When he talked about them, he appeared very happy.
Since this was not my “home” store, I needed to check the cheque before accepting it. When the manager came over, she looked annoyed and told the gentleman that it was out of the question, in a very impolite manner. She told the gentleman he would just have to go to a bank to cash the cheque. The elderly gentleman started to soft ly cry as he looked up at me. He was sorry for being unable to pay his bill. He had no choice but to leave with nothing to take.
Seeing his lonely figure(人影),I felt my heart stopped. I could only think this man could be my grandfather. I was sure he must have been a wonderful functioning member of our society before he went to the nursing home because of illness and old age. I was influenced by his kindness and gentleness on his face, and couldn't believe the impolite way the young manager had refused
the gentleman's request. I felt sad while trying to check out for the next few customers.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble making new friends in your new school. There is no need to be anxious about making new friends, because many teenagers find they meet the same situation when in a new environment. The problem is easy to solve, if you take my advice.
First of all, communicate with your classmates more often as it may help you develop a close relationship with them. Besides, why not join in activities and discussions held in your class If you do this, you can make friends easily. Last but not least, it is a good idea to help others whenever possible.
Hope my advice will be of great help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

And then I handed him a basket filled with all the things he wished to buy. He looked up at me and then to the nurse who had accompanied me to his room. He said I was an angel and he started to weep. I was moved too and felt I really did a great thing.第 page number 页,共 number of pages 页
