I’m not going to say that storms are good, because I know they have stolen from people. I
hear they have taken homes, cars, boats and lives. But that is not my story. My story is that a storm
gave me more than I had thought to ask for.
My mother and I used to be content. She had her dream job as an editor for a publishing
company. She finally had an office with two large windows. I had my own room with a computer.
I had a garden in our backyard. I used to plant, water and weed there.
The storm arose on a Sunday. We were visiting Grandma and Grandpa in Raleigh, so we
missed most of the excitement. The four of us were eating strawberries in their yard. We watched
flying gray clouds in the western sky and remarked on their beauty. We didn’t know that seventy
miles away my garden was destroyed, the great tree in our front yard was broken, and half the
house fell down, so did our yard wall.
I found out later that no one had been killed, but many houses were badly broken. It felt
strange to return to a house that was half-broken, when the air was now quiet and the sky clear
enough to see stars appearing. Though we hardly knew them then, Rosita’s father and brothers
were in our yard, gathering rubbish using a chain saw(链锯) to cut the thickest branches of the
fallen tree. They were covered in sweat and dirt.
{#{QQABDQCAogAoABJAARgCAwUyCgOQkAAAAIoGhEAEIAAAAANABCA=}#}
My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to be helping us because the first thing
she said was “Oh, you don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr Flores laughed and said, “Claro!
Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you can’t sleep in that house e and speak
to my wife. She will help you find out what to do.” My mom doesn’t usually let people tell her
what to do, but she sighed(叹气) deeply as she saw our changed home in the dark light, reached
for my hand, and followed our neighbor Mrs Flores to her house.
( )63. What did the writer see when she was eating strawberries
A.The yard wall fell down. B.The garden was destroyed.
C.The tree in the front yard was broken. D.The gray clouds were flying in the sky.
( )64. What are the best words to describe the writer’s neighbors

②My mother reached for my hand, and followed Mrs Flores to her house.
③We visited Grandma and Grandpa in Raleigh.
④No one had been killed, but many houses were badly broken.
A. ②④①③ B. ③②④① C. ③①④② D. ②①④③
( )66. What is the main idea of this passage
A. We’ll never imagine what will happen in the future.
B. Although the storm broke many things apart, it brought families and neighbors closer together.
C. The writer and his mother feel very lucky because no one is killed.
D. We should never keep fighting on instead of giving up.
( )67. What is the best title for the passage
A.What the storm gave us B. When the storm happened
C.Where we stayed for the night D.How we got on with neighbors

Can plants talk Modern study has found something amazing: they do communicate with
each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other.
This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves
that are being eaten. This is like warning or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another
plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals
drive insects away. Others attract the wasps! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants.
Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more
crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sounds to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds,
but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do
this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link
nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide
web is linked underground by fungi. It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in
some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information
{#{QQABDQCAogAoABJAARgCAwUyCgOQkAAAAIoGhEAEIAAAAANABCA=}#}
and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food
from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn
how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each
other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with
them ourselves.
( )68. What will plants do when they are attacked by insects
A. They will kill the insects by themselves.
B. They will control the wasps to kill the insects.
C. They will send out signals to ask for food.
D. They will produce chemicals as a warning or a call for help.
( )69. How is the wood wide web linked by fungi
A. By making noises with their roots.
B. By connecting the roots of different plants to each other.
C. By sharing food and information with each other.
D. By spreading chemicals to each other.
( )70. What is the writer’s intention of the last paragraph
A. To give people hope for further studies.
B. To praise scientists for their great achievements.
C. To call on people to protect the plants on Earth.
D. To inspire people to communicate with plants.
( )71. What is the structure of the passage
A. ① B. ① C. ① D. ①

I’m not going to say that storms are good, because I know they have stolen from people. I hear they have taken homes, cars, boats and lives. But that is not my story. My story is that a storm gave me more than I had thought to ask for.
My mother and I used to be content. She had her dream job as an editor for a publishing company. She finally had an office with two large windows. I had my own room with a computer. I had a garden in our backyard. I used to plant, water and weed there.
The storm arose on a Sunday. We were visiting Grandma and Grandpa in Raleigh, so we missed most of the excitement. The four of us were eating strawberries in their yard. We watched flying gray clouds in the western sky and remarked on their beauty. We didn’t know that seventy miles away my garden was destroyed, the great tree in our front yard was broken, and half the house fell down, so did our yard wall.
I found out later that no one had been killed, but many houses were badly broken. It felt strange to return to a house that was half-broken, when the air was now quiet and the sky clear enough to see stars appearing. Though we hardly knew them then, Rosita’s father and brothers were in our yard, gathering rubbish using a chain saw(链锯) to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree. They were covered in sweat and dirt.
My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to be helping us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr Flores laughed and said, “Claro! Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you can’t sleep in that house e and speak to my wife. She will help you find out what to do.” My mom doesn’t usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed(叹气) deeply as she saw our changed home in the dark light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor Mrs Flores to her house.

Can plants talk Modern study has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like warning or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sounds to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi. It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
