Where others use sight, I use my sense of smell. When I was six, I embarrassed a boy in class by telling the teacher he’d wet himself. He sat far behind me but I smelled it, intensely. He was so upset that my grandmother was called into school. When we got home, she warned, “Never use your sense of smell for that again.” She explained that I, like her, had hereditary hyperosmia, meaning I’m a super smeller.
My husband Les and I both pursued medical careers. One day, I was struck by the smell of a patient. I later learned that she had diabetes and what I smelled was raised ketones, a chemical produced by the liver. I knew doctors wouldn’t accept my diagnosis, so I stayed quiet.
In 1982, before Les’s 32nd birthday, I smelled something strange on him. I thought it might be the air of the place he worked in. Twelve years later, in 1994, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It wasn’t until the last months of his life, more than 20 years later, that we discovered I could detect the disease in others, too.
We felt a responsibility to do something. We attended a lecture by Prof. Kunath, a neurobiologist. I asked, “Why is the smell of Parkinson’s not being used for early diagnosis ” He didn’t answer and we left, disappointed. But four months later, he called our home. He had found me after relaying my question to a colleague, who told him, “You must find her.” We began to work as a team to prove my theory.
When Les died in 2015, he made me promise I’d carry on the research. I spent time in labs, smelling sufferers’ skin oil on swabs (棉签). I could detect whether the person had Parkinson’s with 95% accuracy. This year, our research team published a breakthrough: a three-minute test that can detect the disease by running a swab along someone’s neck skin.
I’ve become known and delivered many lectures. I’m working on detecting cancers and tuberculosis. I never imagined, at 72, this would be my life’s work. I constantly think about how I lost my Les, but also how I finally fulfilled my promise.
4. What did the author do when she smelled something strange on her husband
A. She took the smell lightly. B. She drove him to hospital.
C. She warned him of a disease. D. She made him shower more.
5. Why did Prof. Kunath call the author
A To promote her to a higher position.
B. To make an apology to her.
C. To invite her for a specific research project.
D. To discuss her husband’s disease.
6. How could the research team detect a patient’s Parkinson’s according to paragraph 5
A. By giving a blood examination.
B. By conducting a short and easy skin test.
C. By taking a nose swab.
D. By arranging for a doctor to have a brief talk.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. My Painful Memory: The Loss of Les
B. My Super Power: Smelling Illness in People
C. A Great Discovery in Detecting Cancer
D. An Unforgettable Childhood Experience
C
Can you imagine there being a community where boys and girls growing up together can finally speak different languages In Ubang, Nigeria, it really happens. It’s not exactly clear what percentage of the words in the men’s and women’s languages are different, but there are enough examples to make sentences sound different when they’re spoken by the opposite sex. For “clothing”, men use the word “nki”, while women say “ariga”; “kitchi” means “tree” for men, while women say “okweng”. These are not just some slight pronunciation differences, but totally different words. “It’s almost like two different lexicons (词汇表),” a language expert, Chi-Chi Undie said. “There are a lot of words that men and women share in common, but there are others which are totally different depending on your sex. They don’t sound alike, and don’t have the same letters. They are completely different words.”
Interestingly both men and women are able to understand each other perfectly in Ubang, as both boys and girls grow up around their parents and get to learn both languages, but by the age of 10, boys are expected to speak in the male tongue. It seems that there is a stage when the male will discover he is not using the rightful language. When he starts speaking the men’s language, you know the maturity is coming into him.
No one really knows how or why the double-language tradition of Ubang began. Chi-Chi Undie believes the two languages are the result of a “double-sex culture” where men and women operate in two separate spheres (范围) and live in separate worlds that rarely come together. However, she admits this is a weak theory, as the double-sex culture is present in many parts of Africa, where there are no different languages for men and women.
Today, with English words constantly entering the lexicon of young Nigerians, Ubang’s two languages are in danger of being lost forever. Worse still, neither the male language nor the female language is written down, so they both rely on young people to pass them down to the next generation.
8. What do we know about languages in Ubang
A. Adults and children speak totally different languages.
B. Words used between men and women are totally different.
C. Some word differences exist in men’s and women’s languages.
D. Only pronunciation differences are shown in men’s and women’s languages.
9. Why can men and women understand each other easily in Ubang
A Their lexicons sound alike.
B. They learn both languages at school.
C. The men can speak two different languages.
D. They are exposed to both languages in their childhood.
10. What does Chi-Chi Undie mainly talk about in paragraph 3
A. The change of the double-sex culture.
B. The future of the double-sex culture.
C. The origin of the double-language tradition.
D. The sphere of the double-language tradition.
11. How does the author feel about the disappearing languages in Ubang
A. Indifferent. B. Concerned. C. Confused. D. Optimistic.
D
Modern museums are trying everything they can to shore up declining attendance. Somehow, there always seems to be some crisis that they are struggling against — a severe funding cut, for example. What’s worse, the unappreciative public is going farther and farther away. So museums do what they can to attract people, and the results are occasionally wonderful and occasionally laughable.
The worst of such results occurs when some curator, someone who is in charge of a museum, decides that the reason the audience isn’t pouring through the doors is that the content is over their heads — the history presented is too complex and political, the art too abstract, or the scientific explanations too in-depth. What occurs then is a uniform simplifying of the exhibits. Text is minimized, and historically significant pieces are passed over in favor of those more pretty and pleasing. The museum becomes a place where people go to look at pretty things instead of a place for learning, understanding and appreciating different cultures, art, and science.
All these efforts have given rise to the concept of “edutainment”— a mixture in which learning is supposed to be accomplished without any effort at all on the part of the visitor. Displays are constructed with an eye toward their entertainment value, with relevant facts slipped secretly in, as though learning were a bitter pill that must be sugarcoated before the average museum visitors can be induced (劝诱) to swallow it. But true education is an active pursuit, not something one receives like a piece of candy. The museum’s job should be to inspire visitors to look deeper, not to force-feed them predigested facts.
If a museum becomes indistinguishable from a theme park, it has failed. Nonprofit institutions exist because, if they did not, no for-profit institutions would serve their function. If active scholarship is missing, then by all means, supply it, instead of shaping the museum to resemble successful entertainment enterprises.
12. What can we learn from paragraph 1
A. Modern museums succeed in raising funds.
B. Modern museums have been quite appreciated.
C. Modern museums are facing many challenges.
D. Modern museums are often far away from city centers.
13. Which of the following best explains “over their heads” underlined in paragraph 2
A. simple and pleasing B. badly expressed
C. educational and important D. too difficult to understand
14. Which of the following would the author most probably agree with
A. Learning is supposed to be interesting.
B. Entertainment shouldn’t be practiced in museums.
C. Museums should help visitors enjoy learning.
D. Museums shouldn’t provide complex content.
15. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To point out a problem of modern museums.
B. To encourage readers to visit museums.
C. To advise readers to acquire knowledge actively.
D. To show some good changes in modern museums.
Fragile. Oversensitive. Glued to their phones. ___16___ While there may be some truth to these stereotypical (刻板印象的) features, there might be more to this generation of teens than what is generally observed.
Never before have the lives of any generation of teens been as flooded with mobile technology and social media as the teens of this generation. ___17___ This is in contrast to the more village spirit or community-oriented attitude of their parents’ and grandparents’ days. We have teens who may not know about who lives in the unit next to theirs, much less offer a friendly nod or wave when they happen to cross paths with a neighbour.
___18___ Arguably, the very connectedness that social media brings about has led to an opening of minds and a flourishing (繁盛) of dialogue among people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Logging onto platforms where people of all walks of life meet means that one is exposed to those people and their distinctive ways of life. In comparison, the parents or grandparents of this generation of teens probably did not have the same opportunity to get to know people outside of their social circles at their age, and are thus more likely to have fixed, stereotypical opinions of people different from them. This generation of teens, on the other hand, has the chance to use this technology to learn more about and attempt to understand the variety and diversity out there. ___19___
To conclude, the teens of this generation differ in many ways from their predecessors (前辈), in some ways more positive than others. ___20___ Therefore, this generation of teens differs from past generations, with the changes around them.
A. No wonder the self-confidence and mental health of teens have been damaged.
B. Yet, the effects of technology on this generation of teens are not all bad.
C. Is this what comes to mind when we think of the teens of this generation
D. Their parents or grandparents were likely less connected and more isolated.
E. Moreover, in the older generations’ mind, the teens today are more individualistic.
F. As a result, this might be why the teens today are more open-minded and progressive.
G. Every generation is a product of the cultural, political and economic events of their time.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show ” She grinned (笑), “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank ” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing (排练) almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

A. To promote her to a higher position.
B. To make an apology to her.
C. To invite her for a specific research project.
D. To discuss her husband’s disease.
6. How could the research team detect a patient’s Parkinson’s according to paragraph 5
A. By giving a blood examination.
B. By conducting a short and easy skin test.
C. By taking a nose swab.
D. By arranging for a doctor to have a brief talk.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. My Painful Memory: The Loss of Les
B. My Super Power: Smelling Illness in People
C. A Great Discovery in Detecting Cancer
D. An Unforgettable Childhood Experience
A 5. C 6. B 7. B

所以B选项“My Super Power: Smelling Illness in People (我的超能力:能闻到人患病)”符合文章主旨。故选B。
Interestingly, both men and women are able to understand each other perfectly in Ubang, as both boys and girls grow up around their parents and get to learn both languages, but by the age of 10, boys are expected to speak in the male tongue.
A. Their lexicons sound alike.
B. They learn both languages at school.
C. The men can speak two different languages.
D. They are exposed to both languages in their childhood.
10. What does Chi-Chi Undie mainly talk about in paragraph 3
A. The change of the double-sex culture.
B The future of the double-sex culture.
C. The origin of the double-language tradition.
D. The sphere of the double-language tradition.
11. How does the author feel about the disappearing languages in Ubang
A. Indifferent. B. Concerned. C. Confused. D. Optimistic.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B

根据第一段中“Can you imagine there being a community where boys and girls growing up together can finally speak different languages In Ubang Nigeria, it really happens. It’s not exactly clear what percentage of the words in the men’s and women’s languages are different, but there are enough examples to make sentences sound different when they’re spoken by the opposite sex.”(你能想象在一个社区里男孩和女孩一起长大最终可能说不同的语言吗?
根据第二段中“Interestingly, both men and women are able to understand each other perfectly in Ubang, as both boys and girls grow up around their parents and get to learn both languages”(有趣的是,在乌邦,男人和女人都能够完全理解对方,因为男孩和女孩都在父母身边长大,并学习两种语言。)
根据第三段“No one really knows how or why the double-language tradition of Ubang began. Chi-Chi Undie believes the two languages are the result of a “double-sex culture” where men and women operate in two separate spheres (范围) and live in separate worlds that rarely come together. However, she admits this is a weak theory, as the double-sex culture is present in many parts of Africa, where there are no different languages for men and women.(没有人真正知道 Ubang 的双语传统是如何以及为什么开始的。Chi-Chi Undie认为,这两种语言是“双性文化”的结果,在这种文化中,男性和女性分别在两个不同的领域工作,生活在不同的世界,很少会走到一起。然而,她承认这是一个薄弱的理论,因为双性文化存在于非洲的许多地方,那里没有男女不同的语言。)”可知,第三段主要介绍了双语传统的起源。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Today, with English words constantly entering the lexicon of young Nigerians, Ubang’s two languages are in danger of being lost forever. Worse still, neither the male language nor the female language is written down, so they both rely on young people to pass them down to the next generation.(如今,随着英语词汇不断进入尼日利亚年轻人的词典,乌邦的两种语言面临着永远消失的危险。更糟糕的是,男性语言和女性语言都没有被记录下来,所以它们都依赖于年轻人将它们传递给下一代。)”可知,乌邦的两种语言面临着永远消失的危险,更糟糕是是男性语言和女性语言都没有被记录下来,由此可推知,对于乌邦尼日利亚正在消失的语言,作者很是担心。故选B。

C 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第一段“Modern museums are trying everything they can to shore up declining attendance. Somehow, there always seems to be some crisis that they are struggling against — a severe funding cut, for example. What’s worse, the unappreciative public is going farther and farther away. (现代博物馆正在尽一切努力来提振不断下降的参观人数。不知怎么,他们似乎总是在与一些危机作斗争——例如,严重的资金削减。更糟糕的是,不领情的公众离我们越来越远。)”可知,现代博物馆面临很多挑战,比如:持续下降的参观人数和严重削减的资金。故选C。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。破折号的作用是进一步解释前文内容。根据第二段破折号后内容“—the history presented is too complex and political, the art too abstract, or the scientific explanations too in-depth. (——呈现的历史太复杂和政治,艺术太抽象,或者科学解释太深入)”可知,一些博物馆馆长认为观众不蜂拥入场的原因是内容“太难了”,所以划线词“over their heads”和“too difficult to understand”同义,故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But true education is an active pursuit, not something one receives like a piece of candy. The museum’s job should be to inspire visitors to look deeper, not to force-feed them predigested facts. (真正的教育是一种积极的追求,而不是像一块糖果一样接受。博物馆的工作应该是激励参观者看得更深入,而不是向他们强行灌输简单的事实)”和最后一段“If active scholarship is missing, then by all means, supply it, instead of shaping the museum to resemble successful entertainment enterprises.(如果缺少活跃的学术研究,那就尽一切办法提供它,而不是把博物馆塑造成成功的娱乐企业。)”
故选A。

B. Yet the effects of technology on this generation of teens are not all bad.

Fear and anxiety coursed through my veins, and it seemed that all our hard work was in vain. But then the thought of the support and encouragement from Emma and my mom came flooding back to me. It was at the moment that I realized that I couldn’t let self-doubt hold me back. Filled with determination, I resolved to proceed with the performance by myself.
Paragraph 2:
Finally came the big moment. As I stepped onto the stage, I could feel my heart thumping wildly in my chest. Glancing around the hall, I took a deep breath and began to sing. Surprisingly, all my worries suddenly disappeared and a wave of confidence washed over me. I was completely immersed in the joy of performing and the audience was spellbound by the passion in my voice. When I finished my song, the whole hall burst into applause. Tears of joy welled up in my eyes as Emma presented a big bunch of flowers to me, and my mum stood near, winking at us. From that day forward, I learned that by overcoming fears and self-doubts, we can make a difference.
