Imagine walking into the depths of the jungle (丛林) to observe the chimpanzees who cal it home. With a click of your camera, you document groundbreaking information about the species. Sounds wonderful, right Jane Goodall did just that.
When Goodall was young, reading and exploring nature were her ideas of fun. Her mother encouraged her to learn and ask questions. Goodal dreamed of seeing the habitats (栖息地) of her favorite animals like chimpanzees firsthand.
In July 1957, when she was 23, Goodal arrived in Tanzania, East Africa, and journeyed to the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve. She learned early on that studying chimpanzees wouldn’t be easy. To observe chimpanzees up close, she had to gain their trust. That took months. To her, the chimpanzees were complex creatures with lives surprisingly similar to ours.
In October 1960, Goodall was observing chimps. She watched as they made tools out of grass stems to pick ants out of a nest. Until then, people thought humans were the only species that used tools, Because of Goodall’s discovery, chimpanzees are now accepted as intelligent, social animals.
Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977, to provide conservation and environmental education. In the late 1980s, her focus shifted to something much larger. Deforestation (滥伐森林) and climate change were affecting the world’s natural habitats. The vegetation chimpanzees depended on for food was in danger. Goodall left Gombe to help. The fight she began against habitat loss continues today, through animal reserves and research sites.
Throughout her life, Goodall’s work has protected the lives of people and animals around the world. And she encourages young people to join in this fight for a better world. In 1991, she founded Roots & Shoots. It equips young people to take action on issues that matter. Goodall says that if we all do our part to help, the world will be a better place.

5. How did Goodall make a great discovery about chimps in Tanzania

6. Why did Goodall enlarge her study field
A. To adapt to climate change. B. To find food for chimpanzees.
C. To protect the animals’ habitats. D. To provide environmental education.
7. What is the best title for the text

After a quick scan of your face, you are free to enter train stations, amusement parks and concerts. In spite of the convenience, facial recognition technology has led to some concerns over the misuse of data.
A draft regulation on facial recognition technology was published online early this month by the Cyberspace Administration of China. It aims to provide stronger protection of people’s personal information. “Such a regulation is essential and timely. It’s related to individual’s rights and interests, as well as public security,” Zhao Zhanling, a lawyer from Beijing, told China Daily.
Permission is especially emphasized in the draft. The person should permit the use of his or her information before any party collects and analyzes someone’s facial information with face-scanning technology. There should be texts or audio instructions clearly showing what the information will be used for.
Public places should not use facial recognition technology without first obtaining individuals’ permission. This applies to various locations, including hotels, banks, stations, sports venues, museums, and libraries.
The draft restricts many uses of facial recognition technology in daily life, which will “trigger a wave of change” once fully implemented, Wu Qingxia, a lawyer in Shanghai, told Southern Metropolis Daily. “For example, if a camera is set up outside a cafe, it can’t just take pictures of the area outside whenever it wants. Cameras on cars can only record when someone is driving and shouldn’t be used to take pictures of the road or identify people who are walking or driving,” Wu said.
The misuse of personal information has resulted in an increasing number of criminal cases. For example criminals may use photos of people’s faces to break into systems which rely on facial recognition, such as banks. They can also use the photos to create fake videos for other crimes, said Huang Xiaosu at the Bureau of Network Security Protection of the Ministry of Public Security during a recent press release. It was also announced that cybersecurity police officers are now strengthening efforts to fight the sources of personal information misuse.
8. What is the purpose of the draft regulation
A. To control public behavior. B. To safeguard individual data privacy.
C. To promote the use of new technology. D. To establish guidelines for public spaces.
9. What is a requirement for using someone’s facial information
A. Approval from the individual. B. Payment for usage.
C. Agreement by a third party. D. Written or audio records.
10. How is the draft regulation expected to impact the use of cameras
A. Cameras on cars will be strictly banned. B. Camera users will require special licenses.
C. Cameras can only capture specific activities. D. Camera placement will be closely monitored.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Impact of face-scanning technology on banks. B. Warnings given by cybersecurity police officers.
C. Problems caused by misusing private information. D. Methods used by the government to control cybercrime.
D
Curiosity is a familiar feeling among people. But as soon as we examine that feeling, curiosity reveals itself to be a complex emotion indeed. Just ask yourself: Is curiosity a positive feeling or a negative feeling Is it more like frustration(挫败)or more like hope Is it a painful reminder of what we don’t(yet)know, or an exciting signal towards what we might soon discover
Actually, curiosity can be all of these things. But the object of curiosity’s desire is information. Of course, not all feelings of curiosity are the same. Curiosity can be more or less pleasurable, more or less aggravating. So what accounts for this variation (变化)
Once we recognize that curiosity has many faces, we can consider what affects the nature of our experience in a given case. The paper by Noordewier does just this for the dimension of time. The researchers ask: Is the experience of curiosity more likely to be positive when we expect that our curiosity will be satisfied sooner rather than later
To answer this question, the researchers conducted three studies with over 200 participants. In each study, the researchers first stimulated (刺激) a state of curiosity by telling people that they would later watch a video that contained “something with different shades of brown.” Half the people were told they would watch the video after a short delay of only one minute, and half were told that there would first be a 30-minute delay during which they would complete other tasks.
The key finding was that while both groups reported equal levels of curiosity, the curiosity was accompanied by more negative feelings for those participants facing a long versus a short delay. The finding cast light on the two faces of curiosity. When our curiosity will not be satisfied anytime soon, we focus on not knowing, on the information gap itself, which is largely sick. But when our curiosity is about to be satisfied, we focus on almost knowing, or the expected settlement, which is a more positive experience. On this view, the two faces of curiosity reflect different mixtures of not knowing versus almost knowing.
12. Why do people have curiosity
A. To get pleasure. B. To become positive.
C. To get information. D. To become hopeful.
13. What does the underlined word “aggravating” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Joyful. B. Unpleasant. C. Exciting. D. Frightening.
14. Why did researchers conduct the experiment
A. To satisfy the curiosity of the public.
B. To prove their previous assumptions.
C. To recognize the different faces of curiosity.
D. To study how time affects curiosity experience.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Curiosity is a common emotion.
B. Curiosity is a positive motivator.
C. Curiosity can be a positive or negative feeling.
D. Curiosity can be satisfied by completing tasks.

During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a one-week tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join.
On Saturday morning, Darla’s mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket. “If you girls stick to tennis, then we’ll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.” The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 a.m., Patty’s mom woke her up. “It’s time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it’s too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla’s house, then they walked to the court.
Mrs. Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs. Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand and backhand. By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs. Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.
Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves or hitting the ball. Patty wasn’t really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn’t need to practice. By the end of the summer, Darla began to get the hang of it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well, but she didn’t want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring.

C. By studying the photos of chimps. D. By summarizing others’ studies.
6 Why did Goodall enlarge her study field
A. To adapt to climate change. B. To find food for chimpanzees.
C. To protect the animals’ habitats. D. To provide environmental education.

For example, criminals may use photos of people’s faces to break into systems which rely on facial recognition, such as banks.

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. C

But when our curiosity is about to be satisfied, we focus on almost know ng, or the expected settlement, which is a more positive experience.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】【参考范文】
The week before school started, Mrs. Cane held another training course. Darla and Patty signed up immediately. In a class, Mrs. Cane asked the teenagers to play in turn. Darla came first, impressing others with her excellent performance. Mrs. Cane was pleased with Darla’s progress. “Well, I can tell who’s been practicing!” she smiled. Soon it was Patty’s turn. Everyone looked at the “talent” expectantly. Yet, Patty had not practiced and was far behind the rest, which was a shock for all. Patty was upset and absent until the class was over.
Patty couldn’t stop thinking of her poor performance on the way home. She realized she needed change if she still wanted to continue with tennis. The next day, Patty came to Darla’s team when they practiced to ask whether she could join. Warmly welcomed, she became a member of the team that day. Weak though she was, Patty enjoyed herself and worked hard at practice. She finally found that “natural talent” got her nowhere without diligence and she was able to join in the fun. That was one of the best lessons of her life.
