With a new year come new opportunities, and there’s no time like the present to start learning more about parts of the world you’ve never dreamed of before. Forget the standard bucket list: Machu Picchu, Mt Everest, Galapagos Islands—these places are over-visited. And besides, why follow the beaten path when you can get off it
Black Sands in Central America
Lush green forests, amazing surf breaks, and village ruins greet visitors to El pared to the popular Costa Rica, the country’s coastline is a surf-enthusiast’s dream. If you’d rather be under the water than gliding along it, then grab the chance to dive in a live volcano. Lake Ilopango sits 460 meters above sea level, near the capital of San Salvador. Thanks to the hot vents in the lake bed the water is a balmy 85F.
Rainbow Mountains in China
Hike the multicolor peaks in Zhangye, Gansu Province, which is also home to hidden caves, rock formation, and temples balanced precariously on cliff faces. The otherworldly colors look just like a painted rainbow and give Peru’s much-visited mountains of the same name a run for their money.

Technically an external territory of Australia, Christmas Island is dominated by around 50 million red crabs. Head to this remote island to witness the stunning spectacle of their annual migration, plus keep an eye out for manta rays, dolphins, and whale sharks that patrol the 80km of coastline. Much of Puerto Rico is still without power after Hurricane Fiona struck the island on Sept. 19. The storm laid it in darkness and thousands of people in trouble, even some missing.
Yet some see signs of hope. Over the past five years, around 50,000 solar and battery power systems have been installed on homes in Puerto Rico, says Chris Rauscher, senior director of public policy at Sunrun, the biggest residential solar company in the United States. And almost all that equipment appears to have continued supplying electricity while the island’s central power system went dark, according to market participants and industry observers.
Climate change is making hurricanes wetter and more powerful, increasing the risks to electric reliability in places like Puerto Rico. That strengthens the case for more investment in home solar set-ups, Rauscher says.
“It’s showing that renewables paired with storage ... are really the fundamental building blocks of a clean recovery that we need to really focus on on the island and elsewhere,” he says.
John Berger, chief manager of Sunnova, another big solar company, agrees, calling Puerto Rico “a window into the future.” “The technology’s just physically and fundamentally better,” than the traditional power system, Berger says. “And that’s not going to change.”
But big challenges are still hanging over the island. Lots of reconstruction is still needed. And now on top of that, the hurricane season is not over yet. “The next storm after this — and it will come, I don’t know if it’s next week or next year or two years from now, but it will come — we’ll be in even better shape than we are right now,” Berger says.
4. What did the Hurricane Fiona result in
A. The newly-built island’s central power system. B. Power failure in much of Puerto Rico.
C. The loss of thousands of people. D. Losing eyesight of some people.
5. Why is John Berger mentioned by the author
A. To make the point convincing. B. To give more choices for the islanders.
C To state the status of Puerto Rico. D. To make comparisons between the two companies.
6. What is the top challenge of Puerto Rico now
A. The reconstruction work. B. The coming hurricane.
C. The shortage of money. D. The need for a safe shelter.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. A Severe Hurricane B. Natural Disasters Are Approaching
C. Renewable Energy Give Puerto Rico Light D. A Newly-rebuilt Island

Food waste is a serious problem. In 2010, nearly 133 billion pounds worth of food was transported to U.S. landfills. Food waste is truly a waste to all of humanity. That’s because when you throw out a rotten apple or a moldy container of leftovers, you’re not just throwing away the food, but all the resources that went into producing it.
Water plays a major role in food production, and as a result, food waste translates to a large amount of water wastage. All foods have a water footprint, the direct and indirect water that goes into producing a certain food, although some footprints are larger than others. In general, meats tend to need the most water for production, primarily because of the amount of food the animal needs. Also, larger animals aren’t as efficient in terms of meat production as smaller animals like chickens or turkeys, and the bigger beasts therefore have a larger water footprint.
Food waste has environmental impacts, too. “If you put all the food waste into one country, it would be the world’s third largest greenhouse gas emitter,” says Brian Lipinski, an associate in the World Resource Institute’s Food Program. Decomposing (分解) food that makes its way into landfills releases methane (甲烷), which is significantly more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide.
All is not lost, however. There are many efforts underway to cut food loss at every level. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency recently called for a 50 percent reduction in food waste by 2030. Meanwhile, Portland launched a citywide composting (堆制肥料) program a few years ago. And at the retail (零售) level, the former president of Trader Joe’s recently opened a store near Boston that sells surplus food donated by grocery stores at low prices.
Still waste can’t be avoided. There’s never going to be some ideal or perfect way to eliminate it all. Fortunately, change at any level, whether it’s as a supplier, retailer or consumer, will help ease the impact of food waste on natural resources.
8. Why is wasting food a waste of water resources
A. Food waste contains a lot of water.
B. Food waste causes water pollution.
C. Food production needs plenty of water.
D. Dealing with food waste consumes much water.
9. How does food waste influence the environment
A. It smells rather terrible.
B. It poisons the soil severely.
C. It carries a lot of bacteria.
D. It releases a greenhouse gas.
10. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Strategies for ensuring food safety.
B. Measures for reducing food waste.
C. Benefits of the composting program.
D. Causes of monitoring food production.
11. What does the author convey in the last paragraph
A. Better late than never.
B. Content is better than riches.
C. Many hands make light work.
D. Make hay while the sun shines.
D
Plant-based products have been breaking into the foodie mainstream in the United States, after years in which vegan (素食的) burgers and milk alternatives knocked on the market’s door. That is partly because more companies are targeting people who seek to reduce the amount of meat they eat, rather than forswear it altogether.
Now, as fish alternatives begin to attract investment and land at restaurants in the United States and beyond, people who track the fishless fish sector say that it could achieve significant growth.
One reason, they say, is that consumers in rich countries are becoming more aware of the seafood industry’s environmental problems, including overfishing and the health risks of some seafood. Another is that today’s plant-based companies do a better job of approaching fish flavor than earlier ones did—an important consideration for non-vegetarians
“There are a number of people already looking at alternative hamburgers,” said Joshua Katz, an analyst at the consulting firm McKinsey who has studied the alt-protein (替代蛋白) industry. “You might actually say, ‘I should work on something else.’ And seafood is still a massive market with convincing reasons to work on.” People who reduce their consumption of animal proteins for environmental reasons often stop eating red meat, which requires enormous amounts of land and water to farm.
But alt-fish advocates say that seafood also comes with environmental problems. Unsustainable fishing practices have destroyed fisheries (鱼汤) in recent decades, a problem both for biodiversity and the millions of people who depend on the sea for income and food.
“It’s simply a smarter way to make seafood,” says Mirte Gosker, the acting managing director of the Good Food Institute Asia-Pacific, a nonprofit advocacy group that promotes alternative proteins. “Full stop.”
So far plant-based seafood products in the United States account for only 0.1 percent of the country’s seafood sales, less than 1.4 percent of the U.S. meat market occupied by plant-based meat alternatives. But alt-seafood enterprises worldwide received at least $83 million from investors in 2020, compared with $1 million three years earlier. As of this June, 83 companies were producing alt-seafood products around the world, a nearly threefold rise since 2017. All but 18 of those 83 companies focus on plant-based products. A dozen others are developing lab-grown seafood, which is not yet commercially available in any country.
12. What does the underlined word “forswear” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Sample. B. Consume. C. Produce. D. Abandon.
13. Which aspect of seafood do non-vegetarians focus on
A. The health risks. B. The protein intake.
C. The taste and mouthfeel. D. The overfishing problem.
14. What is Mirte Gosker’s tone when he says “Full stop” in paragraph 6
A. Determined. B. Concerned. C. Humorous. D. Enthusiastic.
15. What do the figures in the last paragraph mainly show
A. Seafood companies are struggling.
B. Plant-based meat products will be a trend.
C. Alt-seafood products have a promising future.
D. Seafood will be commercially available soon.

During my time in primary school, I was an active participant in sports and games. I was good at athletics and particularly excelled in long jump and sprinting (短跑). My abilities led me to win the B Division long jump competition, and I was chosen to represent my school in the District Sports Meet for both the long jump and relay events.
The Sports Meet spanned across two days. On the first day, I didn’t have any scheduled events, so I eagerly watched other athletes competing. Tents were set up for the participants. My school team was assigned the last tent, which happened to be the furthest one from the track. Despite the less than-ideal location, we made the most out of it.
The second day arrived, and it was finally time for my events. The long jump took place in the early afternoon, followed by the highly anticipated 8×50 m relay later in the day. As the long jump competition began, I realized the competition was fierce. Though I managed a respectable jump of 3. 65 meters, I was amazed by another participant, a ten-year-old, who effortlessly cleared over 4 meters. Adding to the challenge, this remarkable young athlete also wore spikes (钉子鞋), which gave him an advantage over the rest of us. Despite finishing in fourth place, narrowly missing out on a medal, I stayed positive.
However, I still had hope for the 8×50 m relay, where I was assigned to run the fifth leg and pass the baton (接力棒). Finally, the race day arrived. With anticipation building, we took our positions on the track. As the starter’s gun rang, a wave of excitement swept over me. I closely. followed the progress of my teammates in the earlier legs, and to my thrill, we were among the top competitors, firmly securing at least second place.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
As my turn arrived, I grasped the baton and began to run.

And at the retail (零售) level, the former president of Trader Joe’s recently opened a store near Boston that sells surplus food donated by grocery stores at low prices.
Still, waste can’t be avoided. There’s never going to be some ideal or perfect way to eliminate it all. Fortunately, change at any level, whether it’s as a supplier, retailer or consumer, will help ease the impact of food waste on natural resources.

根据第二段中“Water plays a major role in food production, and as a result, food waste translates to a large amount of water wastage.(水在食物生产中起着重要作用,因此,食物浪费转化为大量的水浪费。)”
根据第三段中“Decomposing (分解) food that makes its way into landfills releases methane (甲烷), which is significantly more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide.(食物分解后进入垃圾填埋场会释放出甲烷,这比二氧化碳对环境的危害要大得多。)”
根据第四段中“There are many efforts underway to cut food loss at every level. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency recently called for a 50 percent reduction in food waste by 2030. Meanwhile, Portland launched a citywide composting (堆制肥料) program a few years ago. And at the retail (零售) level, the former president of Trader Joe’s recently opened a store near Boston that sells surplus food donated by grocery stores at low prices.(在各个层面上都在努力减少食物损失。美国农业部和环境保护署最近呼吁到2030年将食物浪费减少50%。与此同时,波特兰在几年前启动了一项全市范围的堆肥计划。在零售层面,Trader Joe’s的前总裁最近在波士顿附近开了一家店,以低价出售杂货店捐赠的剩余食品。)”可知,本段介绍了各方为减少食物损失而采取的措施,既有宏观政策层面的,也有零售层面的。故选B项。
【11题详解】

Fortunately, change at any level, whether it’s as a supplier, retailer or consumer, will help ease the impact of food waste on natural resources.(然而,浪费是无法避免的。 故选A项。
D 13. C 14. A 15. C
根据划线单词所在句子“That is partly because more companies are targeting people who seek to reduce the amount of meat they eat, rather than forswear it altogether. (这在一定程度上是因为越来越多的公司瞄准了那些试图减少肉类摄入量的人,而不是完全____肉类)”可知此处划线单词和前面的动词reduce相呼应,表示肉类的摄入是减少而不是“完全放弃”,因此第一段中带下划线的单词的意思是“D. Abandon放弃”,故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。文章第三段讲到“Another is that today’s plant-based companies do a better job of approaching fish flavor than earlier ones did—an important consideration for non-vegetarians (非素食者). (另一个原因是,与早期相比,今天的植物性公司在接近鱼类风味方面做得更好,这是非素食者要考虑的一个重因素)”可知,非素食主义者关注海鲜的味道和口感方面。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。文章第四段讲到“People who reduce their consumption of animal proteins for environmental reasons often stop eating red meat, which requires enormous amounts of land and water to farm. (由于环境原因减少动物蛋白消费的人通常会停止食用红肉,因为红肉需要大量的土地和水来耕种。) ”以及第六段讲到“It’s simply a smarter way to make seafood (这只是一种更聪明的海鲜制作方法)”可知Mirte Gosker认为这种海鲜制作方法是可行的,因此第六段中说“到此为止,不必多说”时的语气是坚定的,故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。文章最后一段讲到“As of this June, 83 companies were producing alt-seafood products around the world, a nearly threefold rise since 2017. All but 18 of those 83 companies focus on plant-based products. (截至今年6月,全球有83家公司生产另类海鲜产品,自2017年以来增长了近三倍。在这83家公司中,除18家外,其余都专注于植物性产品。)”可知,最后一段的数字主要表明了替代海鲜产品前景光明,故选C。

【答案】Skipping Meals
Our class conducted a survey entitled “How often meals are skipped”. The results of the survey show that the percentage of students who skip meals several times a week is 50%.
Some students are keen to eat snacks, skipping regular meals, which does great harm to their health, and even their study, while other students may not have access to a healthy meal due to their busy schedules or lack of access to healthy food options.
As far as I am concerned, providing healthy meal options can help reduce the harmful impact of skipping meals and provide students with the nutrition they need. Secondly, it’s important to carve out time for meals by making small adjustments in our schedule or prioritizing breakfast or lunch over other activities.

As my turn arrived, I grasped the baton and began to run. The wind rushed past me, propelling me forward towards the teammate who awaited my arrival. However, just as I was gaining speed, an unexpected accident happened. I suddenly stumbled and fell to the ground, interrupting the whole progress. The audience let out a collective gasp of surprise. But without hesitation, I quickly rose to my feet, brushing off the dirt, and continued to run towards my goal. Cheers and shouts of support from my classmates gave me strength. I regained my focus and pushed forward.
Although my accident had indeed cost us precious time, our team’s spirit remained unshaken. As I handed off the baton to the next runner, I observed the unwavering resolve in his face. Although our chances for a medal seemed slim, we refused to let disappointment occupy our minds. Instead, we chose to view the incident as a test of our strength and perseverance. Success doesn’t always depend on the end result, but rather on how we face adversity and grow from it. We didn’t claim a medal that day, but we left the meet with no regrets because we had given it our all.
