When the May bank holiday weekend is around the corner, you may be finding yourself thinking of ideas to keep the kids entertained or simply to make the most extra day off. Luckily, we've got you a guide to some of the top things to do in the UK this weekend.
The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) has one of the most comprehensive natural history collections in the world. Our mission is to increase scientific knowledge and inspire the public.
We focus on a topic of the exhibition every month. For example, visitors can understand the ancient society by appreciating fossils and old artifacts in June. As for the photographs, we often send expeditions(远征队)to deserts, rainforests, oceans, and mountains to take pictures.
Scientists here take the responsibility of preserving the collections for future generations very seriously. Researchers must request a visit a week earlier so they can work with the objects crucial for their studies.
There are several major programs with dedicated researchers.
Encyclopedia of Life The goal of this program is to share knowledge and advance the understanding of nature by providing free and multilingual information on all known species for anyone who wishes to learn.
Global Genome Initiative: The Global Genome(基因组)Initiative(GGI)is a collaborative endeavor to collect the Earth's genomic biodiversity, preserve it in the world's biorepositories and make it available to researchers everywhere. The Global Genome Initiative aims to capture 50% of the world's genomic diversity by the end of 2022.
Anthropocene: The program studies the unofficial unit of geologic time. It was used to describe the most recent period in Earth's history when human activities started to have a significant impact on the planet's climates and ecosystems.
Pure Program: The goal of this program is to share knowledge, evaluate natural resources, and preserve the vulnerable marine ecosystem.

I'm 52, and as surprising as it may seem, I'm a gymnast. In a sport for young girls, I have found an unlikely path to joy. When I enter the gym, no matter how much stress I might be feeling, my mind clears and I forget my life. I think of nothing but what I am doing.
When I was 9,I went every Saturday to a gymnastic academy. The coach had gray hair and wore ballet shoes and had boundless enthusiasm. He would say, “You are going to be a gymnast.” And I believed him. I vividly remember the first time I did a roundoff back handspring by myself, the weightlessness of it. I lived for Saturday mornings. I only ever did gymnastics recreationally---I didn't even know real gyms existed---but I always loved it.
That long dormant(蛰伏的)love came roaring back in my forties. It happened in an instant, at parents' day for my daughter's beginning gymnastics class. The bars were just sitting there, and I had this overwhelming urge to grab hold and swing. But l couldn't make it through the warm up(热身运动)at the first adult class I went. I felt bad during conditioning. I was the oldest person there. But that spark of memory glowed with possibility. I went back to class again, and again. It was hard and it was humbling. But soon I was doing back handsprings like I used to.
There is nothing like the thrill of getting a new skill, that combination of speed, mechanics, timing, muscles, guts. There is an ineffable(不可言喻的)element, too, something like faith. By the time we reach middle age, most of us have had to deal with our fair share of unwelcome surprises, like illness, family crisis or the death of a beloved parent. But gymnastics has brought the most delightful surprises---I keep getting better, surpassing what I thought were limits, amazing myself by what I can do. At a time in life when many things feel like they are sliding down the slope towards old, gymnastics is a gift of fluency and competence in motion. I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm a better gymnast now than I was at 16.

C.The strong urge to play with the bars.
D.Her sweet memory of doing gymnastics.
26.Which of the following can describe the author's personality
A.Faithful and easy-going.
B.Humble and competent.
C.Passionate and persistent.
D.Ambitious and considerate.
27.What does the text mainly talk about

Without convenient access to phones or pens for letter-writing, wolves must rely on howls(嚎叫) to communicate over long distances. These howls allow the social mammals to maintain their territories as well as keep track of other pack members.
While dogs are descendants(后代)of wolves, some dogs are not known to howl at all, whereas others, like sled dogs, will do so frequently. A new study exposes family dogs to wolf howls to better understand why some of our canine (犬类的) companions no longer seem to bother with this seemingly important form of dog communication.
E tv s Loránd University (LTE) ethologist Fanni Lehoczki and colleagues put 68 purebred pet dogs to the test by observing their reactions to recordings of wild wolf howls. According to the results, breeds(品种)which are genetically more similar to wolves are more likely to reply with their own howls to wolf howl playbacks.
Young dogs, regardless of breed, can give a response to wolf howls, indicating most dogs, no matter the breed, are capable of howling. But the more closely related an adult dog is to a wolf, the more likely they were to howl back in response to a wolf howl.
“Interestingly, this genetic effect on howling occurs only among older dogs (greater than five years), for which an experience or some age-related personality effect can be a plausible explanation,” says ethologist Tamás Faragó also from ELTE.
What's more, those dogs that responded with howling showed greater stress behaviors, such as mouth licking or shaking. “This result on the stress behaviors may also confirm our hypothesis that more ancient breeds, due to their genetic relatedness, can process the information encoded in wolf howls better,” the researchers write in their paper.
“Dingoes, which took an evolutionary path away from domestic dogs around 8,000 years ago, are known to howl extensively to find each other, just like wolves. This suggests social factors could still play a larger role in determining canine vocal(发声的) behavior than genetics,” explains Lehoczki.
“Our findings are among the first ones indicating that domestication can change how animals process and react to others' vocalizations. This, ultimately, might help us better understand the evolution of vocal communication,” the researchers conclude.
28.What does the new study mainly want to find out
A.How wolves communicate over long distances.
B. Why some dogs do not communicate by howling.
C.Whether wolf howls influence dogs' communication.
D. What is the difference between family dogs and wild ones.
29.What does the underlined word “plausible” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Reasonable.
B.Creative.
C. Surprising.
D.Unbelievable.
30.What does the result on the stress behaviors show
A. Ancient breeds feel uneasy in the presence of wolves.
B.Ancient breeds understand the meaning of wolf howls.
C.Ancient breeds try to send messages to the howling wolves.
D. Ancient breeds have difficulty communicating with wolves.
31.What do the researchers mainly talk about in the last paragraph
A.The application of the findings.
B.The limitations of the new study.
C.The challenges for further study.
D.The significance of the findings.

“Going wireless is the future for just about everything!” That is a quote from scientist Sreekanth Chalasani, and we can't help but agree. Realizing this, a team of scientists has made a breakthrough toward wirelessly controlling human cells using sound, in a technique called “sonogenetics(声遗传学)”.This concept may seem strange but let us explain.
Basically, the term “sonogenetics” means using ultrasound(超声波)to change the behavior of cells in a non-invasive manner. “We already know that ultrasound is safe, and that it can go through bone, muscle and other tissues, making it the ultimate tool for controlling cells deep in the body,” says Chalasani.
Low-frequency ultrasound waves can target a particular protein that is sensitive to the signal. This research, published in Nature Communications, focused on TRPA1. When this protein is stimulated through the ultrasound waves, it also stimulates the cells which carry it. What type of cell is being stimulated depends on the outcome. For example, a muscle cell may contract with stimulation, or a neuron (神经元)in the brain will fire. In this experiment, scientists genetically marked cells with an increased concentration of TRPA1, making them the key targets of the ultrasound waves.
Currently, treating conditions like Parkinson's disease requires scientists to implant electrodes(电极)in the brain which stimulate certain disordered cells. Researchers hope that sonogenetics can one day replace these invasive treatments.
In the future, the team wants to adjust the placement and amount of TRPAI around the body using the gene treatment. Gene delivery techniques have already been shown to be successful in humans, such as in treating blindness. Therefore, it's just a case of adjusting this theory to a different sound-based setting.
“Gene delivery techniques already exist for getting a new gene---such as TRPA1---into the human heart,” Chalasani says. “If we can then use an external ultrasound device to activate those cells, that could really change pacemakers.” There is still a while to go before this treatment can become a reality. The future for sonogenetics, though, looks bright.
32.What's working principle for sonogenetics
A.Using medicine interventional therapies.
B. Changing cells' shape with new equipment.
C.Controlling cells in a non-invasive manner.
D. Using a kind of unique medical composition.
33.What did the scientists do in the experiment
A.Change the concentration of the protein.
B.Find target cells for treatment precisely.
C.Analyze the protein sensitive to the sign.
D.Choose the type of cell to be stimulated.
34.What can we learn about sonogenetics from paragraphs 4 and 5
A. It can be applied to other fields besides medicine.
B. It may replace some traditional medical therapies.
C. It will totally transform gene delivery techniques.
D. It has succeeded in curing diseases like blindness.
35.What's the best title for the text
A.Can cells be controlled by sound
B.How is sonogenetics clinically used
C. Are gene delivery techniques available
D.What are applications of sonogenetics

Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector's turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the Room Five champion.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions ” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr.Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay." said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil." Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer.
Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory.
As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn't want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words "Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He'd cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn't change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning's questions too ” Hector thought. “He'd take away my Room Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler's room.
Paragraph 2:
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee.

Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler's room. “Hector! Come and help me look for...”"This ” Hector. stopped Mr.Adler midsentence, holding out the open envelope. Mr. Adler's brows were smoothed but then knitted again. Before he formed questions, Hector started pouring out his regrets. If he had waited another moment, they would have torn him into pieces. “Can I still be in the Bee ” asked Hector timidly. “absolutely, my honest boy,” Mr. Adler patted his shoulder. “I don't believe in punishing people for making the right decisions and correcting their mistakes. ” Immense relief washed over Hector.
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee. Having been up late studying, Hector looked exhausted but extremely excited. So did all the other competitors. All the eyes fixed on the stage, Hector fell blood rushing onto his cheeks and his heart beating fast. Unfortunately, the questions Mr. Adler rewrote were so tough that he was knocked out in round three. But Hector realized to his surprise that he didn't feel bad about losing at all. Whether others knew he was smart was of no significance. He'd set out to learn everything about the world and ended up learning more about himself.

M: OK. So, we all feel anxious to look our best. But clothing styles quickly change, and fashion isn't cheap! Plus, the more we buy, the more we waste. How many of us have over five clothing items that we never wear
W:Good,how will you fix this
M: Through my service, Rental Trend.
W:How does it work
M: It's a website where users can rent out their clothes. Anyone who is interested in those clothes can offer a price and rent them. There will be many types of clothes. Whether it's for a patty, photo taking or vacation, we try our best to meet people's need.
W:Interesting,Paul. Have you borrowed from any banks
M: No. And because this company is only a year old, this is the first time I've come to sincerely invite you to put money into our website. (12) I'm sure you will see what a big difference you make. With your help, we can bring fair fashion nationwide.

M:Goodness me, they're friends of mine! Are they OK Did they take anything
W: Everyone is fine, sir. A watch and some pieces of jewelry are missing, which has been upsetting, but thankfully no one was hurt.
M:How awful, but I'm glad they are okay.
W:May I ask you a few questions, sir
M:Of course.
W: Did you see anything unusual around eleven o'clock last night (16) Something out of the ordinary, loud noises perhaps, or activity that you wouldn't normally see outside
M: Now that you come to mention it, I did notice some flashing lights from the house opposite around that time. I remember thinking it was strange because they are an old couple and their lights usually go out by around ten o'clock. (16)
W:Did you see anyone
M: I did take a look as it happened. There was a white car parked outside their house. OH, I'm so stupid-I should have realized something was happening!
W: Is there anything else you can remember Anything at all Even if you don't think it is important
M:Wait a minute!
W:What is it
M: I forgot to say I have an outside security camera! It must have recorded everything!
W:Excellent, sir! It may solve the case! Let's take a look immediately!

I'm glad so many of you have come for the gardening class. Welcome, all of you.
Each week, we will be growing and looking after our plants, (17) and I will show you all how to get the best out of them. You will all have your own small section of land where you can choose which plants to grow. This week, we want a bed of roses to brighten up the place. (18) In the following weeks, you may wish to grow your own flowers, fruit and vegetables. I will be here to advise and encourage you. I am here every day, so it is easy to come and find me if you have any questions. All I ask in return is that you have a great time in the great outdoors. (19) Gardening is such a wonderful thing to do. It's good exercise, and rewarding. Plus, when you garden in groups like this, it turns into a wonderful social event too.
Right then, let me show you to your areas. Follow me.
