As the world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon, is home to around 1 million natives. It grows over eight countries and makes about one fifth of earth’s oxygen(氧气). People call it “the lungs(肺) of our planet”.
However, the rainforest is in danger now. A large fire broke out in the Amazon last month. As of(自……起) Aug. 27, it had lasted for 22 days.
In fact, the Amazon has been hit by a large number of fires this year. Between January and August, there were over 74,000 fires—the highest number since 2013, the BBC reported. Most of the fires came from human activities, CNN noted. Farmers in the Amazon have long used fire to prepare land for planting. But these fires can easily get out of hand. People are trying to think about what to do about it.
The Brazilian government has sent soldiers to fight the fires. But scientists have said that it will take around 20 to 40 years to rebuild the forests’ ecosystem(生态系统). They have also said that the fires have destroyed 15 to 17 percent of the rainforest, China Daily reported.
Amazon’s importance to the earth is what the lung’s importance to the body. With a better rainforest, we can not only get more fresh air, but also enjoy the beauty of great nature.
