“Oh my God!” Chun Wai Chan cries out. Exciting jumps are all in a day’s work for this young ballet dancer. But now, he is jumping his way to the top of his field.
When Chan first arrived in the United States several years ago, he didn’t imagine that one day he would be joining the New York City Ballet (NYCB) , the world’s famous dancing company ---let alone take on the role of the principal (首席的) dancer.
Born in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, Chan fell in love with dancing as a child. At only eleven, he asked his parents to let him go to an arts school. Having shown a talent for ballet, Chan was accepted into Guangzhou Arts School in 2004when he was 12. In 2010, he entered the Prix de Lausanne, an international competition for young dancers held in Switzerland, and became a finalist (决赛选手). The achievement earned him a chance to study with the Houston Ballet’s second company, Houston Ballet II. Chan joined the Houston Ballet in 2012. Five years later, he was promoted to its principal dancer.
